BeautifulMadness answered Tuesday March 1 2005, 1:47 pm: It could be perfectly natural, or due to a change in diet (i.e. you've changed from processed commerical rabbit food to vegetables)...although it could be something more serious. It could be inidicative of a heart problem (if the heart is pumping too slowly then he won't grow and he may loose weight if his heart isn't strong enough), a thyroid problem, nervous or digestive system failure (check the bunnies mouth - is he swallowing all the food?) or even mites. Get this checked out by the vets and isolate him (maybe bring him inside for an afternoon if this isn't possible) if you can until then, not so much because he may pass something on to the other rabbits but because you'll wanna be watching him - how he jumps, what his poo is like (it's gross I know but you've gotta check it's OK) and if his eyes, ears, nose and mouth are all clear and healthy. Like I've said, it could be absolutely nothing but you had better get it checked out just in case!! Runny eyes and noses are the biggest sign of disease in rabbits so make sure you check that out.

P.S. Other people have said about losing fur - that's in spring for the mating season; they pull out small amounts of their own fur to make nests. And that's only females. So it can't be anything season related - they'd keep fat for the winter! [ BeautifulMadness's advice column | Ask BeautifulMadness A Question ]

selectopaque answered Tuesday March 1 2005, 12:29 pm: It's not normal, and could be caused by something serious. Any time a pet loses a drastic amount of weight you should worry about it. Especially since it hasn't happened to your other two rabbits, and I assume that you feed them all the same kind and amount of food.
You need to at least call the Veterinarian. If you explain everything to them, then they will be able to tell you what to do next.
Think about different things that could be causing it- change in diet, change in environment, etc.
Zoinatrobe answered Tuesday March 1 2005, 11:36 am: In winter if your rabbits are living outside, they must burn more calories in order to keep warm. If your rabbit loses body fat, he will be cold for the rest of winter. Give him a little more food than usual, put more hay in the hutch and purchase some sort of heating device safe for rabbits. You can usually get these from your local vets.
