Question Posted Friday February 11 2005, 2:28 am

Every time someone says I wanna go to Mardi Gras, I'm always like "ME TOO!" but the truth is, I don't know exactly what its for and what you do there. I've only seen clips of people partying on the street... I think it would be fun, but what is it your doing and is it some type of celebration of some sort? It looks fun, but what is it?

Well, since I'm from La, I can tell you from experience.
It's a really fun and loud train of floats which certain people ride on called krewes, i think.
they throw out beautiful pearls(beads) and you scream and wave your hands and get their attention to catch the prettiest beads. At some parades, they throw teddy bears and coconuts and if you know someone or really catch their attention, you get something special, like roses and such. It's really fun and you HAVE to go there. Hope I helped you with the details.

Mardi Gras is usually in February or even early March... i just remember its after lent. Theres alot of things that go on... its not just partying... Mardi Gras is music, parades, picnics, floats, excitement ... and a big holiday in New Orleans. Everyone is wearing purple, green, and gold; and adorned with long beads caught from the floats (or from the gUyS!) LoL! so there is alot more to mardi gras then partying and drinking... but whats wrong with ThaT?! haha... its totally fun... i have never been there but my cousin has and she says that wait till your 21 or at the youngest 18. i hope i answered your question! and i hope u make it down there someday! LoL!

Moop answered Friday February 11 2005, 9:05 am:
Mardi gras literally means Fat Tuesday en francais. It's always the day before Ash Wednesday and celebrated traditionally by eating special foods like King's Cake (frosted bread containing a coin or little toy doll; the "winner" finds the coin/doll). A lot of special foods. On Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of Lent in Christian churches, people remember what Christ died for and traditionally give things up for 40 days until Easter to be more like him.

Mardi Gras is the party season from Jan 6 (Epiphany/Theophany) until Ash Wednesday. The last day is Fat Tuesday when the last big party is usually thrown. It ushers in Lent and the Easter Season when you start fasting for 40 days.

Well since you can google search this and you have all those other wonderful search engines I'm just going to give you a little info, because I don't know tons about it either. I know that it's a celebration, I'm not positive on what they're celebrating, I'm not sure if it's right, so I won't share it here. But it's in New Orleans (or at least where the REAL parties happen) And the guys will give girls beads if the girls will flash the guys. I've never been to a mardi gras celebration, but I went to a mardi gras b-day party and we wore masks just for our eyes, you wear lots of crazy looking things. I don't really know how to explain mardi gras. Just try a google search or a yahoo search or something. You'll definitley get more information then I'm giving.
