Mormons

Question Posted Friday January 28 2005, 10:52 pm

I don't mean to bash the religion, but I'm sick of it. I live in Utah, so I'm surrounded by it. And everyone is always bringing up that the religion should be more a part of the school. Well, I don't believe in any of it. Personally, I think their religion was just founded on Joseph Smith trying to steal other men's wives and get away with it. And they have a class here. How do they get away with having a religiously oriented class in a public school, isn't that infringing on the separation of church and state clause? My question is how do I deal with all of this religion when I don't want it, especially since all the guys that I could date are mormon?

Sweetie... I know EXACTLY how you feel. I used to live in Minnesota, and I'm a Wiccan. I moved to Idaho(near Pocatello, where the percentage rate of Mormons is higher than Salt Lake even!), and I had to deal with all that crap.

How can they get away with offering Mormon Seminary as credits? Because the state government is all mormon as well. Utah and Idaho are the ONLY states that can pull that kind of crap. Here's a little story about my experience in school...

I was told by the Vice-Principal of our 99% Mormon school(who btw wanted to be called Brother Bonnie) to take of my pentacle because 'We dont worship the devil here'. I calmly replied with,"Have you heard of the first amendment? I have the freedom to express myself." He then asked if I heard of seperation-of-church-and-state. I got a little more upset, and told him that he wasn't doing a good job of that, as he offers mormon classes as credits, has a mormon school/church on school grounds, and allowed students to try to convert others in the hallways. He didn't know what to say, but still told me to take off my necklace. So I hottly remarked,"M'kay... well... I'll make a deal with you. I'll take off my necklace, if you take off every CTR ring, and cross necklace in this school." He was so upset, he didn't say anything, and just left. He always managed to steal Wiccan books from my friends(which I let them borrow). And I was constantly called into his office, where he said that he should keep them. I told him he'd need to pay me $30 for the book then. And I explained my friends situation, that there was no homework, and the teacher was at her desk, and there were other students doing non-school related activities as well, and so the book should not have been taken. He always got mad at me... he got his revenge on one of the last days of school by giving me In School Suspension when I skipped on Senior Skip Day. I proudly wore my necklace to graduation to show it off to him.

You can't beat them... trust me, I've tried. But definatly don't join them. If you look hard enough you'll find a guy who isn't Mormon to date.

First of all, this whole Joespoh Smith wanting to steal wifes, not true, and you are being totally ingnorant to facts. Men took over the roll of care taker, not husband, of wifes who had lost there husband becasue their husbands died on the way over, the took over that roll so the women and her childern would have a better chance to survive. The whole pligimist thing kept going with some men and what not for some sick reason i know not of, but its against the law now, and mormons don't do that anymore, we think its just as sick as you people do!!!! and i see nothing wrong with haveing a class there about church, its not like you have to take that class, its for people who are very strong in their beliefs of their church. And mormon religion is not just some stupid made-up religion its as real as christians! you should never ever down people becasue of their beliefs/religion, thats selfish and wrong And not everybody in Utah is mormon, there are plenty of Baptists and what not. How to deal with this get over it, ignore, deal with.

Go to your school princlepal and state that you feel it's wrong that there is a class in your school about that religion. It really is. You have to bring this to any authority that can change this. Get your parent involed, this is completely wrong. About the dateing thing talk to the guy you date about how you feel about the situation. Hopefully, he'll understand. If you want any help with the school class either ask me here or on help4ualwayz17.

Well Joseph Smith had nothing to do with the poligamy thing, that was Brigham Young's great idea (we need to have more children and repopulate the religion.)
As for seperation of church and state, notice how many times Bush mentions "god" in his speaches.
All you can do is leave, or question everything read the skeptic's bible (google search) and see the stupidity, join in on the religious convo's and give examples of the stupidity. It wont do much but you'll get some satifaction that you're pissing these people off.

Well, Mormanism is way too deeply rooted in Utah society, and I don't think it's leaving anytime soon.

They won't change, so either you'd have to learn to cope with it, or move the hell out of there.
