Why dont you have her and yourself play for the rest of the members of the band and ask them who is better? If shes that bad then theyll definately pick you. Maybe she could play rhythm [backup] guitar or something if she gets pissed off.

Dear starting a band,
I hear what you're saying. You could teach her how to play the guitar or just give her tips on how to improve her skills. (if you don't want to teach her then reccomend someone else who can)That way you don't feel bad, all you are doing is helping her become better.

Hey, ok so maybe before shes officially in the band teach her how to play the guitar! If you absolutely dont want her to play guitar be like your good at the guitar but wonderful at singing so that she thinks oh they need a singer, im good and i'm better at it. Have someone else in the band tell her that she needs some work at the guitar.

Manulo answered Wednesday January 26 2005, 12:23 am:
Sometimes you need to be honest without hurting the person. Tell her that they need her as the singer and use examples like Gwen Stefani or your girl from Evanescence who simply personify the band with their singing and the fact that the band is there to help them do so. This way you don't hurt her and that whoever you can get to play guitar will do so. Make her feel like a star and she'll do anything.

You should say that you think that the band, like many other bands, would sound better with only one guitarist. (you!)

"Allison, you are such a good singer. We really need you to focus on singing right now. Maybe after several weeks of playing we can let you do a few pieces with us on guitar, but we don't want a hole in our band where you should be singing."
Then help her with the guitar. There is no reason she can't eventually do both with lots of practice.

SurpriseYourself answered Thursday January 20 2005, 9:37 pm:
well if she cant play guitar then she cant, why dont you go up to her and instead of putting her down tell her "well you were going to sing in the first place, so why dont you start of singing, while i teach you guitar, and once you learn enough you can play guitar too." itll be fun for the both of you and no one can get angry at anyone for trying to comprimise, it works out well
MY ADVICE: comprimise

Instead of telling her that she can't play the guitar, say something like "you are cool at the guitar, but I think your singing is better. Maybe you should sing instead of playing." or something like that. Just try to compliment her and she'll be so happy that she wont even notice. Hope my advice helps!

butter her up. be like "you`re such a great singer, you should sing lead instead." just make it sound like you really want her to sing vocals, instead of making it seem like you really wanna play guitar.

Tell her,"Your a better singer than me and the only thing I can do is guitar". Make her feel good at both things, and sorta push her into singing. It WILL work, trust me!

MFS answered Thursday January 20 2005, 5:29 pm:
there's no reason why you can't have more than one guitarist, and there's no reason why someone singing can't play guitar at the same time. I play guitar and bass, and amazingly, I can sing at the same time. Have one person play lead guitar, the other play rhythm.

storageanddisposal answered Thursday January 20 2005, 5:08 pm:
This problem will solve itself. If she can't play, she can't write riffs. Even if she could, she wouldn't have the talent to play them. And if she did, there wouldn't be a problem.

why don't you say something like "Allison, why don't you sing? We don't really need another guitar, and you are a really good singer anyway." eh? eh? purtay good.. you'll have made a good comment about her singing, and she won't feel too hurt if she's only played for a week! ha..
