around the end of summer I started doing my backhandspring on the ground by myself but i was too scared to do it on the gym floor at my school btw i don't take gymnastics my mom says its too much money or something anyways i havent even attempted to do a backhandspring for about 5 months but im really really really scared..does anyone know how to get the fear of tumbling out of my head because almost everyone on my squad has a round-off backhandspring thnx! I rate
First I would start by using a wrist guard to give extra support to your wrists until they are strong enough...I sure wish I had. Next practice on a mat, this will give you extra cushion if you fall and confidence that you won't get hurt to bad. Get a spotter. Make sure your spotter is a pro a back-handsprings and is strong enough to get you around. I would reccomend a male spotter since he'll have more upper body strength to hold you.
Once you have all those conditions met, practice. The more you practice the better you'll get at it. The better you get the more the fear will go away.
Remember when you learned to ride a bike. At first you had to have those training wheels. After that you wanted somebody there to hold the bike in case you fell, but...once you could actually ride on your own with the thought that you can keep the bike up under normal conditions it was no longer fear but it was quite enjoyable. The same thing will happen with back handsprings. Once you got them down it'll be all fun and no fear.

Brunette27 answered Thursday January 20 2005, 6:02 pm: The worst thing that ever happened to me while learning how to do a backhandspring was I fell on my head on hardwood floor. Just make sure that there is a mat and the worst thing that will happen is you might hit your head. I was afraid too the first time. Have your coach spot you and then have them spot you a little less until they have one finger there. If they see that you will fall they will catch you. Good Luck!! kayla56 answered Thursday January 20 2005, 6:02 pm: i've had that same problem before! try having a friend that you trust spot you by putting their hand behind your back to keep you from falling. just jump up really hight and throw your arms really hard backwards and snap your toes threw. dont worry about it just keep practicing n you'll get more and more confident! ATyourSide247 answered Thursday January 20 2005, 5:42 pm: Round off back handsprings are so much easier than standing, if you just keep your mind off being scared and more on how you want to have your back handspring may help <33 Toriia [ ATyourSide247's advice column | Ask ATyourSide247 A Question ]
mysterycocomix answered Thursday January 20 2005, 5:09 pm: Well, I was REALLY scarred when I did my first back handspring. My coach said "Do your best! I'm right here to catch you! I promise" ANd she did! I had to trust in my coach. Not only that, but more in myself. Once I trusted myself, I knew I could do ANYTHING I put my mind to! If this doesn't help, give yourself something to be excited about it. Get motivated my rewarding yourself once you do it! Hope I helped!

xxxxxx answered Thursday January 20 2005, 5:07 pm: okay well you really need to make sure theres a mat. if you fall on your head, thats really bad, im sure you know. make sure you jump with ALL your might so you can get over. keep your arms straight and by your ears. work on snapping your legs when you're landing so you don't fall on your knees. swing your arms really hard. or see if someone will spot you on the first time. be careful! =) [ xxxxxx's advice column | Ask xxxxxx A Question ]
