about my cat...

Question Posted Wednesday January 19 2005, 5:39 pm

in two weeks im going to florida and we'll be gone for 17 days. I have a cat and i was thinking about asking a friend to come by and take care of him. (for money of course) I was wondering would the cat get too lonely being that we wont be around for so long and my friend will only be in the house for five minutes to feed him and change his litter box? Another option is the kennel..but i hear they are very expensive. Do you know about how expensive they are? Should i have my friend come by or take my cat to a kennel? Thanks and i'll rate you guys because i appreciate your time and advice..i too am a columnist. Thanks again..

i would definetley say to let your friend bc you know your friend and you can trust your friend. the kennel is expensive and what if they don't give your cat the love it needs?

let your friend watch your kitty, its the best option. personally i would sneak my cat with me lol.

Hiya i'll tell you now that kennels can be veru expensive! Your cat should be fine alone as they are naturally solitary creatures this is from experiance from the cats that i've known any way but of course you know your pet better than I do, but you could ask your friend to maybe spend some time with your little feline friend rather than just running in and out or would it be possible for her to take the cat to hers?! Just some sugesstions love joolz

I don't think your cat will be lonely. See, cats are very independant, way more than dogs at least. Your cat should be pretty fine with everything and five minutes of friend time sounds like enough. Don't buy a kennel, that would be more traumatizing to the cat if it feels trapped for a long time rather than having space to walk around.. or run, whatever cats do. :) update if you need anymore advice.

i would pay you friend to watch the cat..bring it to her/his house so that the cat wont get to lonley. Alot of the times kennels can be unhealthy places for animals..and its probably best to leave the cat with someone you no will be kind to the cat.

I think since you will be gone for so long, you should put your cat in a kennel. There you kitty will get all the love and attention it needs. They might be expensive though.

well, it all depends on what kennel you use. you can even keep them at some vets offices. when i used to keep my dog at kennels, it was like $25 a day(i think....this was a LOOONG time ago) but my best advice to you is to call around to find out :) and also, ask your friend if he/she could stay for a bit longer than to simply change the litter and feed him. see if they'll play with the cat for a while, that way it won't get too lonely. as long as you trust the person and you know that it will be in good hands, i don't see anything wrong with it....my dad has three cats, so i know where you're coming from. just call around, and if it will be cheaper to kennel it, then do so, if not, talk to your friend and have him/her take some time to keep the cat company sometimes. it should be fine. hope i helped,
Later,
Kat

I can understand your problem. Kennels are nice but your cat might get lonely or scared because they are going to a strange place. On the other hand, your cat needs more that 5 or 10 minutes from your friend. Try asking your friend to go over to your house often and spending a lot of time there. If she cant, look into a kennel or a pet hotel. Pet hotels are really nice and animals love them. Look to see if there is one near you. If there isn't, just ask your friend, or even a family member or a neighbor to come often while you are gone. Hope my advice helps! Let me know how everything turns out! ~Jenny

I don't think a kennel is a good idea for a cat. Being in a new enviorment, and locked up in a cage all day would be more tramatic than being home alone for awhile. And cats are pretty independant creatures. He should be fine if you friend is comming over every few days. Ask if they could spend some time playing with it and give it a few pets as well. You also may want to give him a few new toys right before you leave that will help entertain him.
