Question Posted Wednesday January 19 2005, 11:42 am
Alright, this is sort of a random question, but I'm cleaning out my closet today, because I have WAY too many clothes. It's hard to find anything to wear because I have so much STUFF that I simply never wear...does anyone have a solution to this problem? Like, can you list out what a good amount of clothing to have is? For example, how many jeans you should have, how many tee-shirts, how many skirts, etc. Also, what's the remedy to this? I have so much clothing-but nothing to wear! Should I limit where I shop to like...2 or 3 certain clothing stores? HELP!

Toca_says answered Friday January 28 2005, 11:19 pm: Maybe it's because you buy stuff that lasts for a season and then goes out of style and you never wear it again.. i bought the chic-simple books and they give you the basic wardrobe to have((of course it's very flexible and you can fit it to your style.. it just lists the basics.. you can work off of that))... everything that you need...of course it's very flexible and you can fit it to your style.. it just lists the basics.. you can work off of that... you could probably find them at your library.. anyways if you like something that's in season limit yourself to buying three or four things... make a list of the stuff that you don't wear.. and then make a list of the stuff that you do wear.. ((and not just because it's in style now)) when you go shopping work around that list.. and you'll start buying more of the stuff that you do like... and it will help you to stop wasting your money on clothes that you won't wear...don't limit yourself to a few stores... but always keep in mind that you shouldn't impulse shop... always make sure to check out a few stores for the same item.. and shop for quality... and when you buy something... make sure you will want to wear it.. and that you like it.. hope i helped =) [ Toca_says's advice column | Ask Toca_says A Question ]
LexybelNLisa answered Sunday January 23 2005, 2:00 pm: hmmm well its kinda wierd, because a gurl can never have TOO much clothes lol but anyways, if you really want to cut down on your clothes, go through them all and sort them into piles:
*what you like and will wear
*what you bought but never wore and probly wont
*wats too small
*what you hate
etc. etc, then keep the clothes you like and will grow into, and donate to a charity (its a good cause!!!) the stuff that you hate or is too small.
that should help.. (maybe) but also there is no set amount of how much you should have of each, and no i dont think it is a good idea to limit to 2 or 3 shops thats CRAZY! lol jk, well i wouldnt be able to do that.. but maybe you might want to idk.. ok well good luck [ LexybelNLisa's advice column | Ask LexybelNLisa A Question ]
BeFABULOUSxo answered Friday January 21 2005, 9:29 pm: There is no set amount. You should have "at leasts" Donate the things you dont like/wont wear/to small. Scarfs and accesories can dress up pants and just be creative. keep things neat tho! One thing people try not to do is fold shirt and put them in a draw because they get wrinkled.try to have no less than 10 pants all together. maybe 6+ skirts. 3+ jeans. you dont need to limits your clothing stores because that leads to the "nothing to wear" try mixing things! xO ali [ BeFABULOUSxo's advice column | Ask BeFABULOUSxo A Question ]

luckycharm answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 3:57 pm: ok well when you find stuff that you never wear then modify it! spruce it up a bit and put some personality into it! and on amounts: whatever you wear regularly... if you only like the wear 1 or 2 pairs of jeans then only own 1 or 2 pairs... mix n match! just wear what you think looks right! and you dont have to have a couple special stores to shop at just go where you see clothes that you like! hope we helped!

S_C answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 3:34 pm: Well everyone pretty much gave an awesome answer so I'll just give you a little tip.
I think you should have atleast 7 pairs of jeans, at least 5 sweatpants, or just comfortable lounge pants, or like sweatpants you could wear during P.E (gym class) or whatever.
You should have twice as many shirts as you do jeans, at least. I'm not giving you the most amount you should have, but here's a tip.
Jeans, pants, and shorts should take up no more than a total of 4 drawers (1 drawer for each, and since pants take up a lot of room then just one extra drawer) shirts you should have no more than 4 (two drawers long sleeve,2 drawers shortsleeve) Ummm, that's about all I can think of Oh yeah, I just now noticed you also said skirts. Well, one skirt for each holiday (that you'd wear a skirt on) and then maybe 5 skirts, unless you like them better than shorts, or you like them better than jeans or something.
But, maybe no more than 25 bottoms (jeans, shorts, pants, skirts ...)
And no more than 25 tops (short sleave, cami, longsleeve, workout shirts...)
And then I'll leave the amount of undergarments for you to decide.
Hope I've been of some help! [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
shortytina422 answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 1:18 pm: i don' think having a lot of clothes is bad but there is a point where its just to much!! i think that you should limit the times you should go shopping.. like only go shopping every 2 o r 3 weeks and only buy what you need. like if you need to buy a shirt to match a certain pair of pants, but only that shirt. don't buy clothes you don't need!! xogiggles37xo answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 1:12 pm: having alot of clothes is really good. no matter what keep your clothes just dont go shopping as much. having nothing to wear and alot of clothes doesnt make sense you have something to wear as long as you have clothes even if it's a t-shirt and a thong. theres not a certain amount of clothes you should have just buy and buy and buy and buy and enjoy your clothes. girlygirl answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 12:43 pm: You should plan a whole Saturday to go through your closet. Stand there in your underwear and try everything on. If you haven't worn it in a year or more, or it was too fad-ish, or it doesn't fit well - get rid of it!
Keeping your closet organized will really help... then when you're out shopping and think you need a black t-shirt, you'll know that you have 3 at home already. If you can't see the stuff in your closet, you forget it's there. Sometimes cleaning it out, you'll find some favorites you forgot about and it's like getting new stuff again.
When you do shop, look for good quality, good fit and styles that aren't going to be out next week. Places like the Gap and Old Navy usually have good basics. Good luck :) [ girlygirl's advice column | Ask girlygirl A Question ]
hollaren answered Wednesday January 19 2005, 12:35 pm: go through your closet and everything that you haven't worn in year get rid of, because your probaley not going to wear it again, make outfits and whatever you have that doesn't go with anything get rid of. you dont really need to have a certain number of things, if you have older things that you kept because you used to like it then get rid of it and go through what you have and find something to replace it, dirty or stained things get rid of. trust me this works i did it to my closet and it helped alot.
