Hey guys! I'll try to make thise short.. okay, so I want to go to this high school in Aurora, IL and I am from Springfield. It's called Illinois Math and Science Academy. My parents don't care or anything but they say that I can't go to Florida with my youth group or Puerto Rico with my friend Erin over the summer if I want to go to this high school. It's a 3-year school and it would mean I skip 9th grade, but I would also get to study many cool subjects like astronomy. Which should I pick and why should I pick it? i rate high. Thanks in advance! ~Brit
Additional info, added Friday January 7 2005, 11:58 pm: I'm considered a 'gifted' student so I'm in 9th grade and Iev already taken algebra one and two and im working on geometry rite now. The trip to florida is a church trip to a camp called big stuf and it looks really fun! (check it out www.bigstuf.org). but yes, i would actually get 1 skip my fresman year and graduate a year early.. Want to answer more questions in the Work & School category? It sounds like all of these things really interest you, and those trips will only last for a short time when this will set you up for your future. I'm sure you'll get other oppurtunities to go florida or puerto rico later. maybe if you get a job, and save money you'll be able to go on at least one of those trips. good luck with ur decision [ xASH's advice column | Ask xASH A Question ]

zapreth answered Friday January 7 2005, 6:54 pm: Am I right that this is a money issue for your parents? If so you need to weigh your options. Sure the experience of the trips would be fun and educaional, but will you be able to go farther with your career plans by getting the advanced education from this school? Your problem is a matter of instant gratification verses long term gain. Only you can make that choice. One is neither better than the other in my opinion, but then I never had any plans for a career in math or the sciences. I'm a Liberal Arts baby. I'd definately take the trips. You are not me though. Take a deep breath and think about the goals you have for your future. That's where your answer lies. Good Luck! [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]
Moop answered Friday January 7 2005, 6:42 pm: Here's the low-down on IMSA (I know about 6 sophomores and 3 juniors and 1 senior at IMSA, my school has the highest rate of sending freshman in the state). You do not skip 9th grade, you get it in somewhere else. My best friend is at IMSA, last year she was in school with me. Secondly, it's tough. It's the toughest thing ever. It's so ridiculously tough that it's only one above the school I'm at now in Illinois for being tough, but it does prepare you for college. If I recall correctly, there is one high school in Springfield. I also know people there and IMSA would be good for anyone not wanting to deal with all the crap I hear my Springfield friends deal with. I suggest that if you really want IMSA, you get into SHS then take advanced math classes (college algebra/algebra 2 and geometry simultaneously) and then test into IMSA. That would mean the SAT 1 and 2 and the ACT. AND you need to score really really well. Go ahead and go to Florida and Puerto Rico because it doesn't matter for this year. Just make sure that as a freshman you work your hardest. Get ONLY As and Bs. Then test into IMSA. more information can be found at www.imsa.edu . [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]

NEVERLETG00 answered Friday January 7 2005, 5:52 pm: well.. you seem like i would say 13 14? cuz of 9th grade, and if i were you you seem young and just want to have fun i bet, i think the school would be the best thing if you were older tho, (i loved doing the astronomy unit in science lol sry) start looking forward to your career.. but then again going to puerto rico and florida could be a once in a lifetime thing, i know you could go when your older and stuff, but your going with people that you'll never forget, ya know? well pick whatever you want because both are really good choices! but if i were you i would go with your youth and friend.. but thats just me, i'm sure whatever youll choose will be good for you, x0 and have fun with what you pick! x0 Renee [ NEVERLETG00's advice column | Ask NEVERLETG00 A Question ]
