What should I study?

Question Posted Sunday December 5 2004, 4:33 pm

I don't know what I want to "be" when I'm older. I have no idea what I'm going to study, or anything! My friend makes me think about this, because she's my age, and she knows what she's doing. She's going to be a chef and she's already practicing at home! It makes me think like I am behind. I don't really need 1 thing I am going to be, I just want an idea, or like a couple of occupations for me. When I was little, I always wanted to be a teacher. I played school all the time. But I'm not sure if I still want to. There's no other jobs that I'd specifically want to do, but I'll tell you some of my hobbies. I'm not much of a sports person. I like to write, but I'm not very good. I like to work with kids..I'm thinking maybe a daycare? If you have anything, please share your ideas or thoughts.

I'm 21 years old and just found my major. And really, this is only a beginning major, I might end up going back to school years from now to become a Veterinarian.

My female roommate is 20 years old and has already changed her major 6 times. All six changes happened in the last year and a half. Both me and her didn't even declare a major until our second year in college, and then proceeded to change it to suit our needs and interests. My roommy just came to me last night to say that she thinks she wants to change her major again, but she doesn't know what she wants to be.

My male roommate on the other hand, has known exactly what he wants to be since high school. And he is doing great at it as a senior in college now.

Basically what I'm saying is... you absolutely do not need to worry about your major field of study right now. Once you get to college you will find that there are plenty of things to study. Fun and interesting courses will simply be thrown at you. If you try to choose now, chances are that you will definately change your mind.

When I was 13, I wanted to go to the Air Force and learn how to fly planes. That is the farthest thing from my mind right now. Even before the war started, I should have realized that I would never be able to take the rules of the Air Force. But I was young, just as you are now. Do not try to rush things.

I even wrote my entire college essay on how I have changed my mind about my career choice many many times since I was 5, when I was certain that I would grow up to be a ballerina.

So, with this incredubly long answer, I'm basically trying to say: Don't worry about it. Once you get more experience in each and every field that you might possibly be interested in, then, and only then should you begin to decide.

Right. You don't need to know at this second what you want to be. You don't even need to know for your first few years of college.

Most liberal arts colleges will accept you without you even declaring a major. And the average college student changes majors SIX times - everybody is as confused as you, and I think society, friends, parents, and school makes you think you have to plan your entire life while you're still in college. It's simply not true.

I would spend time now voluteering for different sorts of jobs, maybe getting a Saturday job, or taking classes at a community centre. Explore. Stretch your boundaries. Figure out what you really like and what makes you happy. Continue to do this in college - you'll have a couple of years to take general classes that are required of everyone as well as electives...which are anything that interest you.

Pick a major you enjoy; most degrees are just permission slips to get a job. And there's always graduate school if you want a more specialized degree.

Just relax and ENJOY your studies - that's the point.

How old are you?? That could help explain a few things. Also take this into consideration- my brother is half way through his law degree and he still has no idea what he's going to do. Pretty impressive huh

So lets see, looking ahead and making plans is good, its damn right encouraged enough with the parent's favourite line "soo... what are your plans after school..." stupid line. Anyway so what they want is you to decide what you're going to do so you can have goals and do stuff with your life. But if you don't have some then the world won't fall apart.

Decide firstly what you enjoy and I can almost guarantee their will be a job opportunity. If all else fails you can always take a year off for travelling and decide them ... (ooo me me).

For what you described the first thing I think of is a children's book writer... oo im good. These are pretty easy to write- hard to get published. But I helped my mum write some and it was fun. No technical language what so ever 30 WORDS A PAGE BABY!! I have no idea what you might like to do but don't narrow it down too fast explore your options and look into them. Do some work experience at a day care and see how you like it. Nothing is set just explore your options before you decide. Good luck

Just because your not sure what you want to do yet doesnt mean your behind. Plenty of people don't know what the want to "be." But if it's ideas your looking for, than you could be a teacher (hah thats what I wanted to be too! looks like you and me have something in common) daycare sounds good, infant care, it seems you want to work with children so working as a pediatrician, a nurse for the nursery for newborns.

If you like kids or babies you could be a pediatrician (a baby doctor basically). Just try doing some new stuff and you should find something you like.

You definatley aren't behind! There are tons of kids that have not a clue what they'd like to do in there future! You are still learning about alot of new things that you might like. If you like working with kids, you could be a kindergarden teacher or start a daycare like you said. you say your not very good at writing. Dont let that get in the way of your passion. Concentrate on English and read other books to get a feel for the wording. Practice writing or stay after with your teacher for writing help. He or she would be impressed. Your still a kid dont stress sooo much about your occupation in the next few years. It will come to you.

If you wanted to travel around the world you could go to school to become a Fashion Marketer or Designer. Theres ALOT of jobs out there why dont you get on the internet adn look some up!
