What should my raise be?

Question Posted Sunday December 5 2004, 2:16 pm

I work at an arcade. I was your basic level grunt for a while: Did all the cleaning and such. Then I started getting more into repairs. Then my boss started to trust me with bigger responsibilities. I always carry two important keys with me on the same keychain with my keys for my car, home, etc: The key to the building, and the key to all the machines. I know the passcode to the security system, and have full access to the register, change machine, basically anything to do with money. I know exactly how much money the business makes, how much goes towards expenses, and how much each individual machine makes. I am trusted to run the place myself on several days of the week. That, my friend, is a LOT of trust that has been placed into me.

I started working there in Summer of 2003, so it's been about a year and a half by now. My starting pay was $6 an hour, and I was paid in cash right after the work day. If I worked for 4 hours, I'd take $24 out of the register and go home. No taxes to deal with or anything. Nice huh? But now I have been promoted to Assistant Manager. Now I am an offical employee. I will be paid on Mondays with a check, taxes taken out. The thing is, I'm going to get a raise, but I am to decide what it should be. Help me out.

Take these factors: I have worked there for a year and a half for the same pay, taxes are now being taken out, and I have to do so much more work than I used to. My pay has to be about $6.50 or $6.75 just to receive the same pay, because of taxes now. So what should I ask for? I hate to have made this so long, but there are a lot of factors at work here.

Additional info, added Sunday December 5 2004, 5:37 pm:
I work all day Monday and Friday always, for a total of 20 hours a week. Those are the only days that are consistent. I get called in a lot so my average is 32 hours per week or so. Sometimes over 40. I was the first employee hired. My boss' girlfriend was the former assistant manager but was never paid; her payment was living in his house. Minimum wage here is $5.15..

No offense but I have to laugh at you right in your face LMAOIYF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! News flash guy you are being taken advantage of. If you run the store by yourself for more than one day out of the week, Dont you think you should be getting paid a little more than 6.75$ an hr? most assistant managers anywhere make at least 10 or more and thats at Mcdonalds. No offense but if I was you I would not only ask for more money and I mean a shit load of money but also some benefits. I dont care if you were working under the table or not your not being paid for work rendered.

I'd ask for $6.50 an hour or $7.00/hour salary, with option for review once a year.

hmm it's hard to think out of Canadian dollars for this. But are you still part time? on average how many hours are you working? and what is minimum wage in your state? Did anyone else hold this position before you? and what were they making? That would be a good indication on what to go on.

Without all the above information, I'm going to go with you were making $6.50 originally, with all the taxes now being included and say you should be making around $7.50 now.

i would go for the $6.50 raise. i know that you obviously have a lot of trust instilled in you, and that your job is no walk in the meadow; but you dont want to seem greedy. and because the taxes are already taken out that changes it up a little. you are doing more work now, and because you have so much trust (passwords, keys, access to the register etc.) you still dont want look like you are taking advantage of them. it is a hard situation because you are having to decide your own pay - that is a big sign of trust. all we as advicenators can do is advise you on what we think is the best choice, and i think that it is a better idea to go with $6.50. i hope that it all goes well for you!
