Can birth control give you really really bad mood swings? I started on Ortho tricyclen about three months ago (I'm 19), and recently I've been having really bad mood swings. Could birth control be causing that? Or could it just be outside stress? (which I do have a lot of right now) Any help will be appreciated...I'll rate a 5!
beauteful_withn answered Tuesday November 30 2004, 4:45 pm: Hey hun, first of all if this advice isnt the best, you dont have to bribe me and give me a 5. lol im here to help. im 16 and ill be 17 in march, ive been on birth conrol since just after my 15 birthday. ive been on 4 different kinds. i did however notice that it did give me really bad mood swings in the beginnign. i was constantly fighting with my mom and everyone around me. BUT as time went on things got better. so i dont know if its the Ortho tricyclen or if its the stress- i also noticed that when i get more stressed i get bad mood swings. i think that if you are really concerned about this you should talk to your obgyn or your dr. giving it to you. i hope that this helped and everything works out! I'd speak to your doctor - if you've been on Ortho for a few months, you just might need to give your body more time to relax. I'd say this could definitely be the case if you have a lot of stress in your life right now - there's no way to tell if the pill or the stress is the culprit for your mood swings.
Another option is called the 'mini pill,' which serves the exact same function, but uses less hormones in the process. This can often be milder on your body.
zapreth answered Tuesday November 30 2004, 1:10 pm: Yes! Talk to your doctor about other brands. I've never had a problem with Triphasal(Plus it has a generic now so it's even cheap.) Different brands have different levels of hormones and other stuff that just aren't right for everyone. Only your doctor can give you a full list of what's available to you and what may work best from your medical history. Good Luck! [ zapreth's advice column | Ask zapreth A Question ]
Politics_Junkie answered Tuesday November 30 2004, 12:39 pm: Mood swings, moderate weight gain and upset stomach are all extremely common side effects of birth control pills. After all, you're significantly changing the hormone levels in your body. The good news is that these side effects will usually go away after a few months. In the meantime, they can often be reduced somewhat by taking your pill at the same time each day, taking it towards the end of the day or in the evening and taking it with food. If the side effects are really interfering with your ability to function or don't go away after a few months, you need to go back to your gynecologist. He or she may be able to give you a lower-dosage pill that will be just as effective, but will reduce mood swings and other side effects. peaches_n_cream552 answered Tuesday November 30 2004, 11:42 am: i think it is because of the birth control because i was on the same stuff and i had really bad mood swings to and i took myself of of it and i am not moody anymore. Soo i think it is because of the birth control. but i could also be wrong. or like you said it could also be because you have been stresed alot so that could also be the reason. I hope i helped!!Good luck!! [ peaches_n_cream552's advice column | Ask peaches_n_cream552 A Question ]
lilcutie1212 answered Tuesday November 30 2004, 10:51 am: Hey i went and got some info from online and this is what i got: Changing pills may allow you all the benefits without the mood changes. It may take a couple of tries to find the pill that works best for you. Usually, a particular pill is tried for three months before making any changes. Good communication between you and your doctor is necessary.
Hope that helps you.
