Question Posted Saturday November 20 2004, 7:55 pm
I have been taking paxil (An anti-depressent pill) for about 3 years, and I'm now 16. Recently I stopped taking it because I feel like it blinds me. I feel like i'm too happy on it and I'm not myself. I was thinking about lowering the dose but I've already been on that and It didnt seem to do anything. I think that by taking the pill it changes who I am. My parents are getting really worried now because I havent taken it, and i'm not sure if I should get back on it. Does anyone get what I mean?? I was born who I am, and that is depressed, anxious, and with anger. I think I should be myself and face these problems on my own, with out medicne. I dont think medicine is the best way to deal with problems. Can someone please give me some advice on what to do. Am I doing the right thing?? What do you think about this. Thanks! -Jenny

There can be some serious side effects, such as paranoia - last time I stopped taking my meds, I tried to run away and nearly gave my roommate an ulcer driving around trying to find me. Talk to your doctor about weaning you off medication entirely or gradually starting a new one. It's silly to accept the symptoms of your sickness as "the way you are" - would a diabetic person refuse treatment because "my wacked-out blood sugar is just part of who I am"? No, medication alone isn't going to solve everything when it comes to mental illness, but don't write it off just yet. And whatever you do, definitely don't abruptly stop taking your meds. You can always lower the dose.. I got mine highered cause it wasn't working.. just to be on the safe side, I'd stay on the regular dose. And you gotta take it.. cause if you don't, your blood levels will slowly go all crazy on you and get out of control. I was born like that too.. =}. If you want to stop taking the pills, I recommend you see the person who prescribed the medicine, and talk to them. Go little by little; decreasing the dosage, until you finally aren't taking it. Not taking it anymore just like that is dangerous for your blood levels.. and you'd be doing the right thing by taking shorter dosages!

Do you want to be depressed and mad, or do you want to feel really happy and not you? Personally I'd go with being happy and taking them because you can enjoy life, but it's up to you. ceece answered Sunday November 21 2004, 12:59 pm: Hiya,
You really need to talk over your concerns with your doctor or whoever prescribed your pills to you before you lower your dose or stop taking it. I know you feel that you should be able to deal with problems on your own, but self-medicating will only make things worse, and could be potentially dangerous. Talk to the person that prescribed the pills to you, and they will be able to tell you what the best course of action to take would be - perhaps he/she will be able to give you something different that you're happier with or if you really don't want to take medicine (you won't be able to come off your medication straight away though), a councillor or psycologist may be able to help you. Good luck! [ ceece's advice column | Ask ceece A Question ]

AsKmE135 answered Saturday November 20 2004, 8:54 pm: I think you should stop taking the medicine for a while and see how you feel. I would go to counseling if I were you and try to get help with ur problems. If counseling doesn't work, then you should probably go back on the pills because sometimes the reason for ur depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain and therefore medicine might be your only hope. Hope this helped.. Good luck! [ AsKmE135's advice column | Ask AsKmE135 A Question ]
