Question Posted Wednesday November 10 2004, 2:32 am

This is kind of wierd and I don't mean to be all snooty when I say it...

I love to go shopping, I love going to get my toenails done, I love going out to eat at fancy restaurants. But the thing is, my friends hate doing that kind of stuff. I would be like "Lets go get our toes done!" and they would be like "lol, No, thats stupid". I DO admit it. I'm the stereotypical 'Californian' girl who...spends money and goes to the beach and stuff. But is that bad? My friends never like doing that stuff... and I feel stupid. Its not like they don't have the money. We all have the money to do that stuff, they just think its stupid. What should I do? It seems like I'm the only "preppy" girl at school and I don't fit in with anyone. Yet I've lived in my town for 16 years...so its not like I just moved here and don't fit in. I'm just different. Is there anything I can do to convince my friends? How should I handle it? Because it kind of sucks... and I listen to like, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, and everyone hates those people... I feel so out of the loop, and yet I don't want to be in the loop...I want people to come to my loop....

Dear Ms. Person,

Being different is fine, Even if all of your friends aren't different with you. It's one of the things that makes everyone who they are. People are different but they still get along. Try to talk to people around school and see if they share your love of shopping, pedicures, and all that jazz.
A way to approach your "non-preppy" friends is going along with them, but then saying "guys, I always do what you want to do. Just try what I do. It's fun." Or something along those lines.
It will all work out in time.

I cannot believe you are the only girl who loves to shop, gets her toenails done and likes to eat out. To me..you are the normml teenage girl.

Are you more wealthy than your friends?/Do they no have as much disposable income as you?

Maybe you all could compromise...eat out somewhere then do what they like to do. you must like them if you hang out wiht them/

To me..you sound just like everyone else..what are your friends like?

Have you thought about trying to meet new people at one of the pedicure shops you frequent? It would be easier to meet a friend that is already doing it.
Maybe you should ask some people you don't know if they like to do those sort of things. It's ok to be different. Somebody somewhere is a closet Ashlee Simpson fan, you just have to figure out who.
You might be able to convince one friend and who knows they could get hooked. Offer to pay for their service (I know this can be expensive but at least you won't be a slave to the magazine pile.) I personally like to have my toes painted once in a while simply because I cannot keep my fingernails painted due to work, but I hate bubblegum pop stars. I am not supposed to like them anyway.
So just keep digging, and you will find them
