Question Posted Wednesday November 3 2004, 8:37 pm
my son age 9 has had knee pain, where he can not straighten leg for 4 to 5 days.first it was down the front of his leg and muscle at back as well as his knee.now it is under his knee cap. he cant walk properly and it is constantly there.can anyone help me with what might be the cause.he says he hasnt banged it or hurt it.he does suffer from growing pains.should his knee still be hurting after 4 days where he cannot walk prop.
Additional info, added Wednesday November 3 2004, 8:41 pm: he split his head open 5 days ago and needed 11 stitches.will this have anything to do with it,as it seems his knee kicked off the day or two after.he also suffers ocd, obsessive compulsive disorder.. I had been playing sports all of my life and all of the sudden one day my knee started hurting. I ignored it for several months before it got so bad (pain under the knee cap and throughout the rest of the leg) that I finally set up an appointment with the doctor. It turns out i needed an MRI. I found out i had tendonitus and an effusion (build of of liquids under the knee cap, hitting nerves)... check and see if your son's medical plan covers MRI's and if it does, i think you should have it done as soon as possible. good luck [ twynelyne's advice column | Ask twynelyne A Question ]

kristen22 answered Thursday November 4 2004, 8:19 am: Sounds like it could be Osgood-Schlatter disease.... It is one of the most common causes of knee pain in young children. It causes swelling, pain and tenderness just below the knee, over the shin bone (also called the tibia). It occurs mostly in boys who are having a growth spurt during their pre-teen or teenage years. One or both knees may be affected.
*Osgood-Schlatter disease usually goes away with time. When your child stops growing, the pain and swelling should go away because the patellar tendons become much stronger. Only rarely does Osgood-Schlatter disease persist beyond the growing stage.* [ kristen22's advice column | Ask kristen22 A Question ]
XxRockon answered Wednesday November 3 2004, 10:41 pm: Hmm, im sorry i really don't know what that culd be. Maybe it is a torn ligament or he just bruised his knee internally somehow..or he may hae somethign wrong with his knee caps. I don't think him having OCD has to do with him not being able to walk..Defiantely take him to a doctor to be on the safe side and get things checked out, tell them wat u typed to us..Hope things get worked out soon :) [ XxRockon's advice column | Ask XxRockon A Question ]
XoAlexandra answered Wednesday November 3 2004, 9:28 pm: Well, maybe you should take him to a doctor. I mean, if its hurting him and he cant move it, this would be a good time to get it checked out before it gets any worse. My guess is its excess water in the knee-cap. But then again I am not a doctor. Just go get him checked out as soon as possible. I hope I helped!
Xo_Blondii_oX answered Wednesday November 3 2004, 9:18 pm: hey i had those knee problems...i had to get my surgically fixed because i had a more servere case of this. You should take your son to a knee/leg specialist so they can examine his knee because eventually by the time he is older he will go crippled if it isnt fixed. ( atleast this is what my doctor told me) i dont think that it would have anything to do with his head or ocd.So if i was you id take him to a knee/leg specialist!

mysticpixie05 answered Wednesday November 3 2004, 9:07 pm: No, the splitting open of his head had anything to do with it. Just take him the the hospital emergency room and have his knee x-rayed. It could very well be a possibility that is is part of his growing disorer. But you should still get it checked just to be on the safe side.
