Piano or not.

Question Posted Wednesday November 3 2004, 3:38 pm

I'm 14 / f .. I currently reside in PA. Well, the past 5 weeks have been the best weeks of my life because I haven't had to go to piano lessons. I know its a stupid theory but here goes. I hate PIANO! SO MUCH, i wasn't forced to start, but when i was 11 my best friend did it, and i wanted to be exactly like her, so i joined it. my grades have been suffering, and i think its because of piano, on sundays-wednesdays i worry about my piano lesson because my teacher is so mean. i wanna quit so bad, but how should i tell my mom, i think she knows i want to, but. i don't want her getting disapointed because i already quit band this yr because i didn't like it, she spent 1,000 dollars on a piano and shes been payin 12 dollars a week to let me go for like 3 years, what should i tell her? any help will get 5!

Speanding all that money, you should really give it your best shot at it. But since you hate it so much, just tell her how sorry you are, that it was a mistake to take those classes. And next time pick a class that you ARE interested in. I don't think that piano hurts your grades that badly, through.

Is it the piano you hate or your teacher?... maybe, you could talk to your mom, tell her you aren't enjoying the piano like you use to, and that maybe a new teacher would help you appreciate it more, if you are continuing to hate it after you switch instructors tell her so, stay vocal about it, tell her about your progress... by keeping her informed, if she knows you aren't liking it even after an instructor switch she may or may not be more sympathedic to your situation.

very soon and calmly and politely as possible you should say, "Mom, please sit down because i need to talk to you." take a deep breath and then say, "I really appreciate all the money you spent and everything else that you have done for me to help me become all that I can become, but this piano thing isn't working out for me..." then tell her all your reasons why you think you should quit (grades slipping, etc.)

well it may just be your teacher also in most cases music helps your grades but if you really don't like it get yourself out of there quick your mom will understand the real way to disapoint her is to do somthing you don't want to do besides it'll save her some money too right?

Just explain to your mom that your grades arent as great as they could be and that taking a break for a while would be in the best interest. If you have too, lie a little and say that maybe when your used to things and when your grades are higher, you might start up again.

Piano,
I too amd from Pa and I did the same thing with Karate. I started out and it turned out that my instructor was mean and I didn't like it. Did i quit karate? No. I found another school and learned there and stayed there for 5 years until I got my black belt. Then I quit.
Piano teachers aren't too hard to come by, unless you live in Beaver or Somerset or something. Hell, use a phone book, I think piano teachers are listed in the yellow pages. Hope this helps.

dear piano,

this happend to me before. i went to gymnastics and the people were sooo mean. anytime i did a little dance and act crazy, the people in my group would say i had issues, but when this other girl did it, they laughed so hard they could hardly breath, i was better than half the girls there, but the teacher never noticed, she was too busy laughing. so, i told my mom right after gymnastics that i didn't want to do it and i was sick of it because i got no credit, my mom didn't care because that meant that she didn't have to pay so much money, so do that with your mom. tell her the truth, tell her WHY you want to quit. tell her why you think your grades are suffering and she will understand, if she doesn't tell me, i will think of something

tell your mom how you feel, people grow out of things. just stop taking lessons, and try to sell it if you want, or you could just play for fun when you want.

wow did I write this question? lol I'm the SAME exact way! I'm 14/f too and I JUST litterally quit piano I was scared that my mom would be mad cuz she always told me I was to play until i was 18 (!!) I just said that I didn't want to do them. I told her that i would still play the piano (and I still do) I just don't take lessons. I play the songs I WANT to play on my OWN time. Tell her you can't keep up with school and lessons tell her you want to stop but u dont want to stop playing piano, u'll still use the piano u'd just rather do it on ur own time. I'm now taking guitar lessons cuz I'd rather have those but I still play piano. I can read all music so I just pick up a sheet of music I enjoy and I play it. hopefully she'll understand if not give it time and she will eventually. good luck, sry if that didn't help but my mom was actually pretty understanding about it.

Well just let her know that you think right now isnt the best time to be doing piano lessons. let her know u think your grades are suffering and slipping away to very bad ones and you dont want any interference and you might want to continue piano later on when you start getting better grades and kept them that way for awhile.
