What you gotta do is say hi to him if he's in any of your classes and then he'll know something's up and then you can eventually start conversation with him. Don't be shy, what have you got to loose? If he's a big jerk, forget about him, he's not worth it, but if he's nice, GO YOU!

You really can't except if you go up to him and start talking to him or become friends with him! Bump into him on accident and just say "Hey" or something!
