I really really want to learn guitar. I looked into lessons but their like 20$ a half hour! Its crazy. My friends tell me to just teach myself, but I have no idea how. And my sister told me to get a book or DVD on it to learn from. What do you think? And guitsrists around that could help me? lol. And anyone who taught themselves, how did you and how long did it take?
bloodymassacres answered Sunday December 26 2004, 2:58 pm: I've taught myself bass and I'm actually not that bad.
I just picked up the bass and I played a song, tabs make it really easy to teach yourself.
I learned a song in about a day.
It depends on how much dedication you have to it, if you have dedication, it shouldn't take you long to teach yourself.
What I'm doing, is I'm teaching myself the basics, doing all that stuff, and then I'll get lessons. It costs less money, and the basics are easy to learn yourself. [ bloodymassacres's advice column | Ask bloodymassacres A Question ]
BaseballBri1818 answered Friday November 12 2004, 11:29 am: Teaching yourself NEVER works! You need a teacher or someone who is a professional. And i wouldn't go to a parent or something b/c they usually dont have time. Look in the yellowpages and call around for a session for less the 20 dollars. My lessons are 14 dollars. and my teacher is awesome. Hope i helped! [ BaseballBri1818's advice column | Ask BaseballBri1818 A Question ]
Mercy_x_Me answered Monday October 18 2004, 9:34 pm: i dont play, but I know the answer for this one. If your good at following instructions HONESTLY, really think whether or not you are, then do the DVD's and books and stuff. Plus it will look rele neat especially if you are good and taught yourself! If you find it hard to understand what it trying to be put through your mind without being guided by a teacher, maybe you should dig up that money expensvie or not. Look into other places, there's got to be a place or two cheaper than 20 bux a lesson, put an ad in the newspaper. good luck and happy guitar playin !
WTF answered Monday October 18 2004, 9:22 pm: ok, i learned tabs first, which is nothing like reading music, which i find easier anyway. go here for help.

xXxpinky615xXx answered Monday October 18 2004, 3:18 pm: I'm a guitarist but I take lessons. I've been playing for a year and a half and yes, it is 20 dollars for a half an hour. My friend taught himself how to play and he's AMAZING he's been playing for two years now. We're both just as good, so it's really all up to how dedicated you are and how much you practice. I can do my own stuff now but I go to lessons to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. I learn by hearing (auditory learner) and by doing it. About how long did/does it take... it's really all depends on your speed, if you're a fast learner it will take you less time. Hope this helped. LoViny0ux914 answered Monday October 18 2004, 3:04 pm: it takes everyone a diff. amount of time to learn, so dont go by that! im going to start learning soon too, my stepdad is going to teach me! maybe you could go oneline, and search for a website that has all the notes on it and stuff and teaches you how to read music, that way you can just learn the notes and once you do that, you can start finding songs! x0x0x [ LoViny0ux914's advice column | Ask LoViny0ux914 A Question ]
AdviceMistress answered Monday October 18 2004, 1:35 pm: i use to play guitar but i got lessons i actually quit cuz it got to hard, but i think the best way to learn to play the guitar is to have an actual teacher and lesson because the other ways can be very complicated!!
MFS answered Monday October 18 2004, 11:23 am: If you dig through my column, I've answered this very question many times. Lessons really are the best way to go, and $20/30min is about the standard rate for low-end lessons. If you think that's a lot of money, I suggest you NOT look at professional lessons - seriously.

There are many tapes, DVD's, and even a few web sites with at least half-useful information for learning to play. Again, browse through my column, as I've linked to and listed lots of this stuff before.

Being self-taught requires a shitload of practice. Of course, taking lessons also requires the same amount of practice. Really, it is all about practice and dedication to wanting to improve.

For the record, so you don't think I'm just making this crap up, I've played bass guitar for 16 years, 6-string for about 7 or so, and saxophone for 20.

Ah, hell, I broke down and searched my own column for you... I'm such a softie...
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
