This time of year they are still shedding, but their winter undercoat is trying to grow in also. Chances are your dog has developed what's called a hot spot. This is a sore caused by heat and irritation complecated by licking and bactieria. If you don't think the sore is bad enough to take to the vet, try an over the counter medication and keep the spot as clean and dry as possible. Moisture aggrivates the condition and prevents healing. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ANY ANIMAL. All animals will try to seem as healthy as possible until they just can't pretend anymore. This is a survival tactic too deep for them to control. If YOU are worried, don't just wait until the dog ACTS sick. Depending on the illness or wound this can be deadly. Vet first, relief later. The more experienced you become with your dog, the better you'll be able to judge what is serious and what isn't. Hope it's just a hot spot. Wishing you and your pet the best. mermaidpoetess answered Thursday November 4 2004, 9:05 pm: it could be a lot of things, without more information it's really hard to say, there are several things it could be though. does he wear a collar? if so, is it loose enough? you should be able to fit at least two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck, if it's too tight it can cause irritation and sores. it also might be a bug bite that got infected and irritated. try putting some triple antibacterial ointment on it and see if that helps. it could be dry skin too, try bathing him with some special medicated or moisturizing shampoo for dogs (you can buy it at wal-mart or any other similar store). if none of this helps, or if it's oozing or bleeding, i suggest you take himt o the vet and get it checked out! selectopaque answered Tuesday October 19 2004, 2:36 am: It really could be anything. A "sore" doesn't explain much at all. Is it beneath the skin? Is it above the skin? Is it a bump, or is it just a discoloration? Is there hair loss, or not? Does she scratch, lick, or otherwise pay any attention to it at all? Is it cauliflower in shape and texture, or smooth? Is there any bleeding, oozing or crusting around the sore? Is it hard or soft? If it's bumpy, can you move it around under the skin? How old is your dog? Is this the only place she has a sore like this? Do you keep her collar too tight? Does she even wear a collar at all times? Exactly how often does she wear a collar?
You should call a Veterinarian. To only make a phone call would not cost anything. They can give you some advice as to what it is, and might know exactly what it is just from your discription of it. They might ask you to come in, but you don't necessarily have to.
advice_now_2334 answered Monday October 18 2004, 7:44 pm: do u lock ur dog in a kennel during the day?
maybe it has kennel sores that usually is caused when u keep ur dog in a kennel or a small area for a long period of time. if thats the case then maybe u should stop putting him in those small areas and tie him up in the backyqrd on a long chain so he can still run around but still be protected at the same time. ur dog can also have an irritated spot so he is scratching off his fur and its making a scab. your dog could have an infection or something rong with it. im sure its nothing mandatory but keep an eye on it and if it gets worse then maybe u should visit the vet!! GO0D LUCK AND I HOPE U FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM.!! [ advice_now_2334's advice column | Ask advice_now_2334 A Question ]
