House Training

Question Posted Friday August 27 2004, 8:44 pm

OK got a Terrior Mix puppy about a month ago. We've been training it to go outside the entire time. But it seems like at night he still has problems. When he potties in the floor, we spank him with a newspaper, and then take him straight outside. When hes good and potties outside, we give him a treat. But he still has accidents. Any suggestions on this? ty much.

Be patient with your new puppy. It's still learning what "can't pee in the house" means. As soon as he/she starts to squat say "NO 'PUDDLES'!" "OUTSIDE!" And then calmly take the pup outside. If he/she pees while no one is watching, and you find the puddle after the fact, then you can remind the puppy by bringing it over to the puddle, and as you are pointing to it, say "No 'Puddles'"! And then bring him/her outside. This has always worked for me while raising puppies. It's a good thing to note, too, that puppies are going to be messy and rambunctious. Just wait till he/she starts to chew on your favorite something or another! Welcome to puppy Dom!

Well, I know you're going to hate this idea, but you probably need to take him outside during the times when he usually has accidents. You says it's mostly at night. Try taking him out right before bed, and first thing when you wake up in the morning. If that doesn't work, you might need to take him out in the middle of the night. How about getting a dog door installed, so he can go when he chooses?

I had this problem with my dog when i got him, it took a long tome to train him. Its a puppy, you cant expect them to have total bladder control in a week, be patient, take him out every 2 hours during the day, and when he goes outside say good boy and praise him alot and give him a treat. What we did, we kept our dog in the laundry room at night, we got one of thoses babygates and at one end of the laundry room we put newspaper down, in case he did have an accident,be sure to show him wear it is by walking him to it. when he does have an accident, go in a low voice and say his name, say oooooooo, and noooo put his nose slightly in it but while your putting his nose in it, keep doing the very low voice and saying no and his name. Don't hit him! That doesnt help!
i hope this helps!

Well, he's only a puppy...so he still has to learn that going to the bathroom in the hosue is wrong...
Get him on a schedule and walk him a few times a day and a night so he knows that he has to go outside to do his business rather than in the house...

I hope this helped...
Good Luck with that

the problem with training hm that way is the spanking... the positive treats are good, but your confusing him. if he goes on the floor, and then you spank him, hell associate the pain with going @ all... encourage him when he goes outside, but when he goes inside cover up the smell with a special spray, cuz otherwise hell recognize the smell and go ther again.

ehh...my dog does that alot..we will let her out and she does her busy...and either comes back in or stays outside for an hour and comes back in..and she still has those "accidents" at night...even if she is outside all day..usually dogs learn by the fear of the newspaper..make him do his business one spot of the yard..so he gets the idea that he is suppose to go outside in that spot instead of the house...- hope I helped

i get my dogs wee wee pads. lol, they work well. whenever they piss or shit on it, i can just pick it up and throw it away. the wee wee pad, that is. but you would have to train your puppy to use that as well.

Umm, you can buy these sheets at any supermarket or pet store that is like a diaper. Just lay it out somewhere in the house that your dog knows where it is and it'll go to the bathroom there. Also, take your dog outside about every 2 hours to let it go to the bathroom and get used to the schedule. Hope I helped and good luck :)
