Back Pain

Question Posted Tuesday August 24 2004, 8:21 pm

I'm 21 years old, but I already have an almost constant back pain. Can anyone tell me a daily exercise I could do to make my back stronger and less likely to get strained when I pick up a piece of paper?

You might have scoliosis. Press your doctor for a back x-ray looking for it. Physical therapy works wonders for this. Hopefully it will be something simpler.

I am 13 and my back also kills me... you might wanna see a doctor depending on how bad it is... they might help but doing situps without going all the way up to ur knees (its bad for your back only go like half way up) it might help... experiment with different things! hope you feel better! ~Beccah~

At your gym, there's probably a thing you can lean over and you use your lower back muscles to pull yourself up. It comes up to about your crotch and it leans upward and you have your back pointing at the wall and you simply go down and come up. There's also a lot of machines that work not only your lower back, but your upper back too.

OKay the first thing you need to do is go to the doctor and get some X-rays. There could be something wrong, you could be putting too much stress on it or you culd have scoliosis like I do. The doctor will tell you what to do either see another doctor or do certain types of back exercises.

Hope it helped

Hi-it is possible that this constant back pain you are having to endure is something more than it appears. I'm not saying it's not okay for your back to hurt you and get stiff and cause pain- but it shouldn't be a constant pain. I'm not too sure specifically what excersizes would be good for your back as I'm not aware of where exactly in the back your pain is occuring BUT here are some suggestions..
First-go to a massage therapist for about an hour and see if they can break up some of the pain that you are having..if you can't afford that you can have a friend put their elbow on some parts of you back that may be the most tense..or they can try to use something as simple as a rolly thing on your back to relieve tension. Or you could go to a massage place and ask for one of the students to work on you-it would be about 30 dollars instead of 60 for 1 hour. I find that it is money well spent.
Another thing to consider- You could go to a chiropractor-they are a little more costly but they can help some people tremendously and help with range of motion (picking up a peice of paper becomes easier Also, they do a series of tests that get to the root of your pain.
Also- you may have a condition called Fibromialga ( I think I spelled it corectly) It is a diagnosis that many doctors are very hesitant to call it but many suffer from it. There are several symtons of this -you can search it up on google..but one of them is constant pain some days worse than others..also a sensitivity to the outdoors or bright colors..headaches..etc.
And lastly- you could visit a back specialist of a family phsycian...they could either give you medicine (be careful as some can do more damage than good) or they may suggest surgery..I would steer clear of that.
Oh and as for the excersize check out some websites or go to your gym and ask a trainer what the best thing for you to be doing is for your specific situation. Good luck. If you need any more info let me know! :)

Hello, I am an Athletic Trainer.. Personally you should contact a Doctor if you haven't already.. They will either set you up with a physical Therapist or something along those lines if you can afford it. If you cannot or have no interest in going you should either look up excercises off of www.ask.com or do what my friend does... crunch ups if you can, if that's to much you should start out slow... reach down to your toes... then start workin on other things that stretch the back muscle... You can do it ;)

have you tried one of those body rubs like bengay, icy hot or aspir cream. that may work. you can also try relaxing in a hot tub. or having someone walk on your back. my bf has a bad back and i walk on it for him all the time to crack it and get the kincks out, he said it makes him feel alot better. otherwise try seeing a chiropractor.
