Lost voice

Question Posted Tuesday August 24 2004, 4:44 pm

I lost my voice about a month ago when I went to a singing camp. I had basically overused my voice. Usually I am asked to sing at weddings and such, so my voice is important to me as a way to earn money and express myself. However, after my voice came back after losing it, it has changed. It almost seems for airy, or not as strong. I feel like I forgot how to sing in a way. This has never happened before. I can still sing, but it wasn't as good as it was. Any suggestions on how to build my voice back up to its full potential?

I've seen this happen-- to a lesser degree-- at my chorus camp. The only thing for it seems to be to rest your voice, not shout at all, and drink tons of tea. Chamomile is okay, but lemon-- with honey-- is the best.

Wear a scarf if it's cold out or damp. I love wearing my scarf, and since I started wearing it, I get about half as many problems with my throat as I used to.

As for building back your voice, try doing some solfedge exercises. Doing a scale-- "do, do re do, do re mi re do," etc, and clapping on each 'do' works fairly well.

If none of this helps, you might want to see a doctor.

Dear Singer,
I've never had that happen to me before. Well, I guess I kind of have...when I was little I could belt out any note on the piano, and I got a solo at disneyland and i belted out, "Can you feel the love tonight?" and my friends were there to see me. The next time I saw them they made fun of me, and from that day on till I was 10 or so, I didn't belt and sang very softly. Then later I had to belt out a song, and I did pretty good, but I couldn't/can't hit all the notes like I use to, but slowly it's building. I know it's stupid and sad, but I guess my advice for you would be...to get a good vocal teacher and help you build up your voice. And maybe every day just sing high and low and any song for about 10 mins. and maybe that will help build your voice. But don't over do your voice! "You only have one voice, so treat it with respect!" Hope that helps! If you could rate me that would help me. Remember you can always come to me for advice!
Sincerely,
~MiSSc~

First of all, don't strain and try to get plenty of rest. Also it might help to drink lots of water. You might even consider working with a vocal coach so that you can understand how your breathing works (with your diaphragm). If however you can't find time to go to vocal classes you can check out several websites for information: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
They might be of use. And the most important-trust yourself and don't stress out. If everything continues to get get worse, go to your doctor. Hope this helps :)

You absolutely need to see a doctor. It could be serious enough to end your singing career forever. All of the practice in the world won't help if it is a physical problem. There could be a polyp, callous, or some sort of paralyzing of your vocal chords.

I don't think you can get completely back to full potential. Try warming up very carefully, and practice your full range of scales often.

i also LOVE to sing. this happend to me once. i was sick for a while and had a horrible throut problem. you could be straining you voice somewhat, but thats off topic...anyway. it took A LONG time to get my voice back, im talking 2 or 3 months. but dont worry, it will probably come back. if you are really concerned then i would go to a docter. i hope i could help.

While people seem to be giving you rather vanilla advice so far, mostly about really common singing practices, I have to say this:

Have you been to a doctor yet?

It seriously sounds like you've paralyzed part of your vocal chords. That is a HUGE deal. You should NOT be trying to sing right now. Go see a doctor as soon as you can and make sure you haven't permanently damaged your voice! Please - I'm being quite serious. Lessons, drinking water, etc... none of that will help you if you're larnyx is physically damaged. Go see a doctor.

i have heard that if you drink/ eat dairy products that it builds up a film in your throat causing you to have an odd sounding voice. so maybe if you cut down on drinking/ eating dairy products it will work better. i also sing alot. i love to sing i sing at church occasionally at weddings at school concerts... anywhere there's a stage i'm up on it singing... i drink TONS of orange juice. i've never lost my voice before but i think you should give it some time to get it's strength back. in the mean time. try to avoid using your voice alot and drink lots of orange juice and water!! hope i helped!

Umm, maybe you could go to a singer instructor or singing classes. Also, maybe if you drink lots of water, it'll help? Sorry, I can't sing and I don't know that much of music. Hope I helped :)
