Birth Control

Question Posted Thursday August 19 2004, 9:48 pm

Hey there. Well, I started birth control last Sunday. I haven't even been on it for a complete week. Well, my boyfriend and me had sex, and I read in this little book I have about the birth control I'm taking, and it says it takes a month for birth control to become effective. I really worried now. Is there a chance I could get pregnant? I mean, does it actually take a month, or do they mean, the first time you take it, it's effective?

[ Answer this question ]

Additional info, added Thursday August 19 2004, 11:36 pm:
I was also wondering, is it true that you can't get pregnant a week after your period, or a week after you start your period. One of my friends told me this and I'm not sure if it's true..

depends on what method of birth control you're on.

most methods, however, take AT LEAST ONE WEEK to be effective, so there is a chance that you are pregnant.

while not failsafe, generally a girl will ovulate about fifteen days after she last starter her period. this means that the safest times to have sex would be the week after or before your period. however, this does vary from female to female, and i would strongly recommend using birth control during these times regardless, but perhaps trying to avoid having intercourse at times other than these.

No, it takes a whole month for the birth control to become effective. If you didn't use a condom then yes, there is a chance you could possibly be pregnant because any time two people have sex there is ALWAYS a chance. My mother got pregnant when she was both using birth control and a condom, it just depends on how safe your being. To be completely honest, if your not responsible enough to read the packet that comes along with your birth control then your not responsible enough to be having sex. There is a lot of very important information in that tiny little packet that about 97% of the female population toss into the garbage because they think it's not important. You should really stop and think to yourself if the choices your making right now are the best ones.

It does take at least one month to become effective. During the first month, a second form of protection needs to be used.

There are other times you'll need two forms of protection - if you miss a pill (for the completion of that cycle) or are on anti-biotics.

hey~okay see there is a very good chance that you can and will get pregnant on your first time...I should know I've run into that problem. Birth control does not effectively start working until a month after you've been taking it and you should take it everyday around the same time. You can get pregnant a week before and after your period it is just not as likely as any other time. I hope all this helped you!

Okay, well your 1st question, yes it does take a month. I had to be on the pill when I was like 12(not because I was sexually active, I had slightly disfunctional overaies and it was a way to make me start, I know to much info but I felt I should explain. lol.) But anyways, it took over a month to start working correctly. Oh and just a peice of advice, even if your on the pill you should still use a condom. The pill isnt 100%, it only reduces the chance, especially if you dont take it the same time everyday. As far as your 2nd question yes you can become pregnant at those times. You can become pregnant anytime but your highest chance of getting pregnant is the week after your period. That is when you are "ovualating." In my opinion you should take a pregnancy test the week after your next period (weather you've had it or not!) Good luck and lemme know how it goes!! =)

It actually does take a month for your birth control to become effective. Yes, you could get pregnant and you should use a condom anyways, even if your on birth control.

No, it really does take a month to go into effect, so there is a chance you could get pregnant if you didn't use a condom. You should use a condom while you're on birth control anyway, just to up the safety levels, but that's just my opinion.
Your doctor should've explained this to you more clearly...
I hope this helped!

No, it means exactly what was written in the book. Your doctor really should have explained this to you more.

Yes, you could be pregnant. Also, you might want to go get tested instead of waiting until your next period, because I have read that birth control can be bad for your baby. Use a condom at least until a month has gone by. It's still a good idea even after that because of the large amount of STD's out there now.
