strength

Question Posted Wednesday August 18 2004, 6:07 pm

What are some good ways to get stronger so it's easier to do back-handsprings??? I can do them with a spotter but then when I try doing them by myself, I land on my head all the time. Help me please!!!

It sounds to me as though you need more upper body strength. No problem! Start off by purchasing a "resistance band" (available online or at a good sports store). This helps strengthen your arm muscles. Now, this is how you use it:

Take up your position by standing on the resistance band, your feet hip-width apart. Relax your arms and keep them at their sides, holding the ends of the band in each hand. Now, keeping your elbows tucked in, bend your arms and bring your hands up to their shoulders. Try to keep this in a slow and controlled movement so that the results are maximum. Repeat this 20 times before returning to your starting position. Good luck!

:)

Keep doing them with a spotter and work on them on an air track or tumble - trak and on cushy mats. Also, practice blocking // pushing with your shoulders either by doing a handstand against the wall or doing one and having your coach catch your feet, and then blocking like you should be during your bhs. Wall // partner pushups can help a lot too.

*Start lifting like 10 lb. weights. It will give you arm strength and that's what you need to lift yourself back. It helped me do my back handsprings. Just make sure you're working those arms and that you're jump is good enough*

dear need more strenght:

all you need to do is keep ur arms straight and tell ur self that u can do it..because i had the same problem now i can acctually do it. What i did was i started doing them on a huge squishy mat with a spotter then one day i just threw it out of now where. after you get them on the squshy mat get a smallery flat mat and put it on then sping floor and have a spotter there untill ur doing it by ur self then take the mat away and have the spotter help u 3-4 times then you should be set...but make sure you drink lots of water and dont tire ur self out bc you WILL get hurt if u over do it.

back hand springs arent all about strength you need to perfect your form, just because your weak doesnt mean you should land on your head, you should always land on you hands. if your doing it right that is, you might just be nervous and your not following through like your supposed to, to gain strengs for a hand spring for your arms, bench press, do it all the time, at least 40 lifts a day, not all at once though. for your legs, run or use a trampoline.

start by doing them down a cheese mat by yourself...any arm strength or leg strength to jump would also help - advice: keep your arm straight and by your ears!!

damn you land on your head?? how many times has that happened? maybe you should go to the hospital before you do any more back handsprings...

Added- if you land on your head, then you could get hurt pretty bad...i think going to the hospital to see if something is wrong is advice...
