Why do so many people use teenbonics and 7334? I do not understand. Teenbonics are generally used by the under-18 group (usually... not always...) and are frustrating for people to read sometimes. Especially if English is not the person's first language. 7334 or leet (short for elite) speak is just as obnoxious. It was originally used by hackers to talk about their... "jobs" in chats and forums so they would not be caught. Is it really so hard to type a few more letters? You is only two more letters than "u" and "lyk" is one letter short of being the proper form, like. Anyone else annoyed by teenbonics? Is there any polite way to correct people (especially friends) who use teenbonics? I know not everyone is perfect... a few capitalization or spelling etc. errors are fine. Constant abuse of the English language is wrong.
Additional info, added Tuesday August 10 2004, 12:37 am: Correction: 1334 not 7334. Thanks to the person (sorry, forgot!) who pointed it out.
I've met older people (20+) who use teenbonics. It makes them appear less intelligent than they really are.. Want to answer more questions in the category? I am starting to wonder if any of these people have even set foot in English class or read anything besides chatspeak. The best you can do is to keep your language and grammar as correct as possible, and to encourage your friends and future children to do the same. [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]
Fish answered Monday August 9 2004, 11:11 pm: You're right. I despise teenbonics. It's annoying and lazy and makes the writer look illiterate. There, unfortunately, isn't really a way to correct it. Usually in chats, etc. I just type what I would say outloud. So, I don't use things like lol, or u, or all those other things. It sort of sets an example, some of my friends are converting back to proper English. But you are absolutely right, teenbonics and 7334. . . . should be banned. Ugh... sportscutie13 answered Monday August 9 2004, 10:12 pm: Hey! We aren't abusing the english language or anything- we're just trying to get our message out as quickly as possible- and it just so happens that it is faster to type you with u and, I'm sorry- but I can't type too well, so I do it anyways until I learn- and I don't even do it that much either. I don't see why it annoys you that much. [ sportscutie13's advice column | Ask sportscutie13 A Question ]
selectopaque answered Monday August 9 2004, 10:03 pm: Yes, it's annoying, and it really does disturb me that young kids can be that ignorant about the English language. I've tried to correct people, and only get yelled at. I've been told that it's just way to easy to leave out those one or two little letters, and yes they would be type LyK DiS. I know that a person would not be able to type fast when they are using numbers, Caps. every other letter, and misspelled words. They just seem to think it's cool. When I can't read a question I give it a bad rating in hopes that more people will also rate it bad and it will eventually be deleted. If you are a level one Moderator, then help me by rating all the questions with especially bad teenbonics as frowns. Maybe if all of their questions get deleted they will start to realize that it really isn't very cool.
tinkerbell answered Monday August 9 2004, 9:37 pm: Well there isn't really any way you can stop them except telling them that it bothers you. But the only way they could change would be to change how they talk to everyone not just you .. because it is hard to change for just one person. So you are either gonna have to deal with it or get them to agree with your side! **Kacie** [ tinkerbell's advice column | Ask tinkerbell A Question ]
