I don't know how to clean.

Question Posted Saturday October 25 2003, 8:14 pm

I don't know how to clean. Or budget but that's not the point. my room has gotten really dirty and I want to clean it so I can use it to practice for auditions, do homework, etc and not have to throw all my junk off my bed every night.
Does anyone have some cleaning tips, or something? Or can tell me how to clean?

Yeah sweetie, try sorting everything into piles! Make sure to turn on some cool music and turn off anything that will grab your attention (t.v.) I would suggest getting some little plastic tubs, drawers, little bins, ect (found at any walmart or target) and store things you dont need that often (example: summer clothes in the winter season, old toys that u just cant seem to get rid of, old magazines or books, ect.) Also organize your homework stuff (so u can just grab it up!) and other knick*knacks (small things) alright well I hoped it helped. Keep me updated. -Sonnie

For me, the easiest way is to do one thing at a time. Example: one day, focus only on taking out, sorting and throwing away things that are under your bed. If you break a big task like cleaning into smaller chunks, it goes by easier than tackling evreything at once. Take things that you don't need and throw them away, or if they're in relatively good condition, donate them to a Salvation Army or Goodwill center. If there are things you want to keep but don't have room for, get some boxes and pack the items into them. You can store the boxes in your garage or attic or whatever.

When you're cleaning out your closet, you may want to take all the clothes out and put back the ones you wear a lot, and that still fit. Toss or donate items that no longer fit or that you don't like.

I'm probably not the best person to ask but I do know that you should get rid of everything you don't need. And set aside a lot of time to tidy in.have some music playing.

DO NOT start to rearrange you furniture/watch TV/ take over the world halfway through.

It'll look worse before it starts to look better.

If your room is cluttered (like mine often is), what you probably need is some organizational things (shelves, bins, closet organizers). Also, it is very likely that you have things you dont need/want. If that is the case, I would advise doing this:
Take several boxes/garbage bags, and then start going through the stuff on the floor/laying on tables/generally cluttering up your room. In one garbage bag/box (i will refer to them as garbage bags for now on), put everything that you dont need and dont need, and that you will give away to your local thrift store. In another, put actual GARBAGE, a different bag for things you want but should be put away into storage, and finally the last one for the stuff you want, and can organize. After you have done this, go through the stuff in your closet, all your clothes, everthing else in your room.
Next what you want to do is organize the stuff you have. I hate to sound cliche, but you should attempt to have a place for everything, and everything in its place. Get shelves, closet organizers, bins, everything and anything. Go to your local home improvement, decor, and/or furniture store (such as Ikea, Sears, Home Hardware, Home Outfitters, ect.), and ask a salesperson for organizational tools... explain your predicament to them and they will try and probably can help.
In general, my advice for cleaning would be to not tackle it all at once. Do it in sections: one corner of your room, then your dresser, then a part of your closet, ect. Don't try to do it all at once or it is likely you will get overwhelmed. Also, once it is clean, make a concious decision to keep it that way. Instead of throwing your stuff on the ground, put it away, or things just accumulate and you will end up in the same situation you were before. Hope this helps... if you need more help just ask!

lol ok lets say you have a desk in one part of your room and it's full of junk.Sart off with that and be sure to get the garbage before you do this and get papers out and put some on the side for stuff to throw away and another pile for stuff to keep then throw away those papers in the throw away pile. and organize the desk.

then move to your dresser and look threw your drawers and put long sleeved shirts in one drawer (*note: make sure to fold them) then put short sleeves in the other and pants in another etc.

then go to your bed. get new sheets on there and fix it up lol (if theres stuff on it then just get that off) lol

then go to another desk or whatever you have and if you keep it that way then you don't really have to do it that much anymore lol but if you live with your parents (well i'm a teen so of course i do lol) what my mother does is once she gets home from work she goes shopping and if my room is spottless she buys me things.

if you have any more questions just ask me lol

The key to being clean, I think, is organization. Throw out what you don't need, and find ways to store the other stuff. Make sure everything has a place, and the places for stuff you use every day are accessable and easy to remember. Get shelves and bins and boxes and stuff.

Then, make sure to really get the grime and dirt up. Clutter isn't such a big deal, you can take care of that. But dust under the clutter makes your world pretty gross. Once you've got the clutter off your surfaces, dust them off then really scrub them with some hot soapy water.

Oh, and make your bed every day. The whole room looks a million times cleaner if your bed is made.

ack!! i always have that problem, but recently, i had one of my major-once-every-three-years-clean-ups... lol. it was the holidays, so i had
~ HEAPS OF TIME
(i'm just caps-locking the stuff that is essential for cleaning rooms lol). also, an
~ INCENTIVE
is good. my parents usually buy me something if i clean my room really well. something to remember:
~ IF CHRISTMAS OR BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP, YOU WANT ROOM FOR PREZZIES!!
another thing -
~ DON'T TRY TO CLEAN IT ALL AT ONCE!!
if you aim to finich one area each day, or whatever, you're more likely to get it done, and it won't seem like such a big job.
~ CLEAN THE EASY AREAS THAT LOOK MESSIER THAN THEY ARE FIRST!!
that way, it looks like you've done a lot more, and the rest of the mess won't be so intimidating!!
~ DO IT PROPERLY!!
(i.e. scrub the desk, vacuum, etc) this lets you see how neat and tidy your room really is and makes you want to try and keep it that way. also, it's nice to feel like you're living somewhere clean. oh, and something very important:
~ DON'T THINK "IT MAY COME IN HANDY LATER"
it won't!! and if it does, just get a new one (whatever it is). throw away EVERYTHING unless you know for a fact that you will use it, or if it has a special meaning to you, etc.
hope i thought of everything... good luck!!

Nope. my room's "messy". actually, its very clean, just not organized in a way that my parents recognize. But I know how--im just lazy :P
1)get a LOT of Trash Bags. throw away any trash/unusable items you find.
2)get some boxes (dont use trash bags, u might accidentally throw stuff away) to put stuff in to sell/give away
3)get more shelves/bins/bookshelves. I used to have bins, but they were taken out and now I have 2 bookshelves and not NEARLY enough room for my many books, much less for toys >:(
Anyways, thats about it. O, see if you can get good incentive. My dad's offering to renew my website hosting ($100 value) if I clean my room soon :)
