advice

Hello everyone! I want to first of all thank you for taking the time to read this- I know that it gets very busy on this site! Alright- to get started. About four days ago, I stubbed my little pinky toe. It did not hurt at first, but then about two hours later, I was crying in pain. I am pretty sure that it is broken, because of the bruising, and it now the bones are not lined up as they were. I am not sure what I can do about it. The doctors cannot do anything, because they can not put such a little cast on a toe. Is there anything I can do to help it heal faster?

Thanks! Have a great day :]

generally you should always have an x-ray to get an estimate on how long you should be gentle on whatever it is you broke. whether or not you get one and whether or not it is broken, you should tape your pinky toe to the next one in for about a month and a half and lay off physical activity besides walking for at least two weeks. unless it's the big toe which adjusts your balance, you will always simply tape your toes together and go on your way.

My big toe is broken. Plain and simple, it is definitely broken, please trust me. I haven't told my parents about this, because I am afraid to go to the doctor. It's been broken for about two weeks now. It feels like it hurts more and more everyday. Which might make sense, because since no one knows it's broken.. I am always the one having to go up and down the stairs for everyone and driving everyone everywhere. I never get to rest it. And it's disgustingly swollen. I just hide it like nothing is wrong, and no one would ever know. I just can't do it anymore. It hurts. So my question is, can anyone tell me what might happen if I go to the doctors? X-Ray? Height/weight? Think I might get a cast? Crutches? I am seriously very frightened. For the past two weeks I've felt like I'd rather live with this pain rather than face the music at the doctors. And another thing, is there any possibility the doctors might tell me it's best to leave it alone and stay off of it as much as possible? Could it "heal" on it's own? If I keep my mouth shut about it, will the pain eventually fade on it's own? What would be my consequences by not taking care of it in a proper medical fashion? Finally, I am over 18 years, and we don't have any sort of health insurance. How much would it presumably cost to take care of? Anything you can give me is more than I already have, so thank you so very much!!

since you've waited this long, next winter you will have arthritis all through the bones near the one you broke. it will be incredibly painful for the rest of your life.

second, because it's your big toe you absolutely need to go to the doctor. any other toe you're fine with taping it to the other ones, but your big toe controls balance. typically they cast these when they break and tell you to stay off them.

go to the doctor, now.

i hurt my knee snowboarding it was swollen up like a melon and really bruised, the doctor told me to stay off my knee until its comfortable to walk, i havnt really been doing that, and it still hurts when i walk but i just ignore it cuz it doesnt hurt enough to make my flinch, someone told me if i didnt stay off my knee and let it heal properly that next time i hurt it, it would be much worse and i could perminantly damage my knee, is that true? should i stay off my knee for the next few days

basically yes.

last year I broke one of my toes during the run of a show I had practiced four months for. right now, because it's winter, I have arthritic problems in that one area on my left foot because I kept dancing in the show through the pain and it got broken further when people stepped on it accidentally and when I put tons of pressure on it in my heels. stay off your knee. that show means nothing to me now. whatever you want to do will come back and you can do it some other time. we have all the time in the world.

i jammed my toe. its kind of crewkid now just a little and it hurts and its swollen. i am scared to pop it cuz it hurts so bad. so if i dont will it eventually go back to normal?

for toes other than the big toe, a doctor is not completely necessary in most cases. if you know a health care worker you can have them look at it and feel if there is some sort of break. they'll likely tell you to tape two of yours toes together until it heals to the point where it can be bent in both directions freely without hurting.

for the big toe, you must see a doctor. if it's broken and not reset it can cause you pain for life. this is basically true for all of the toes, but the big toe cannot be simply taped to another toe to heal. it needs a splint because it is a major bone.

perhaps you should have the school nurse or an EMT look at it and tell you if you will need to go to the doctor or not.

i burn my face realy bad like i cooked off 4 layers of skin out of 7 it kills and i put stuff on it to make it better but it makes it hurt worce my skin is realy gross so i was wondering will it get back to normal befor school and thats in a little over a month. is there anyway to make it heal faster because im always crying because it hurts soOOooOOO bad

solarcaine is probably not good for use on your face. it comes in a spray that you really don't want in your eyes or 2 to 3 inches away from your eyes. instead, buy a lotion with lidocaine or (best of all) an aloe vera lotion. oatmeal soaked in water (or aveeno lotion) is also a good, natural, plan. it will speed up healing. aloe will relieve pain. alternate using them beginning with aloe.

I pull out pieces of my hair when i get stressed out angry or bored...i dont know why i do this i guess because i need some way to show my feelings...and i couldn't ever cut myself... i dont know what to do or why i do this... can someone help me!?

this is refered to as trichotillomania. I had it as a very young child. Counseling and stress therapy helped me lose it, but every once in a while I regress. It's tough to beat and you will need help. Tell your parents or your doctor.

I have been cheerleading for 3 years now. this past winter, i hurt both my knees, bad. i went to the doctor recently and she said that it was a rare disease that would take about 2 more years to go away. she said if it got any worse, i would have to stop cheerleading. cheerleading is what i do-it's my life. i can't just stop. what can i do to help my knees not to hurt as much? help!

~Injured Cheerleader~

stop cheerleading. Seriously, it's your only choice. I broke a finger and had to stop playing all my instruments (and knitting, crocheting, etc), sure, it's hard to go through deprivation of what you love, but you just learn to appreciate it more. And you can learn to do other things during that time. It's really not so bad. Write poetry, play chess, knit, make music, art, start acting. Find a star and chase it across the universe until it becomes cliche. Just not one that involves strain to your knees. it will be tough, but it will be worth it in the end.

can u still swim if you got like 5 stiches in your finger????????

probably not. A boy in my PE class had a broken finger once and he had to wear a plastic bag duct-taped to his hand to keep the splint dry. I was lucky, swimming was done for when I broke mine. Depending on the severity of the injury it can go either way. Ask a doctor.
