I've been hiding my broken bone. :/

Question Posted Sunday January 28 2007, 12:25 pm

My big toe is broken. Plain and simple, it is definitely broken, please trust me. I haven't told my parents about this, because I am afraid to go to the doctor. It's been broken for about two weeks now. It feels like it hurts more and more everyday. Which might make sense, because since no one knows it's broken.. I am always the one having to go up and down the stairs for everyone and driving everyone everywhere. I never get to rest it. And it's disgustingly swollen. I just hide it like nothing is wrong, and no one would ever know. I just can't do it anymore. It hurts. So my question is, can anyone tell me what might happen if I go to the doctors? X-Ray? Height/weight? Think I might get a cast? Crutches? I am seriously very frightened. For the past two weeks I've felt like I'd rather live with this pain rather than face the music at the doctors. And another thing, is there any possibility the doctors might tell me it's best to leave it alone and stay off of it as much as possible? Could it "heal" on it's own? If I keep my mouth shut about it, will the pain eventually fade on it's own? What would be my consequences by not taking care of it in a proper medical fashion? Finally, I am over 18 years, and we don't have any sort of health insurance. How much would it presumably cost to take care of? Anything you can give me is more than I already have, so thank you so very much!!

They will very likely just tell you to stay off of it. If it's sticking out sideways really bad they might have to put it back into place. They might do x-rays. Bones heal on their own. It will permanently heal into the position it's in, though, and if the position is an odd one it could hurt for the rest of your life.

Hey whats up? My freind got her nose broken once, just like your toe.And when its broken, then no it can't be healed on its own, becuase broken means that the bone is not in its correct position, its misplaced to rephrase this.
Therefore, you should immediately tell your parents before it actually gets worse or totaly swollen and ruined. So save your self, besides doctors are so helpful and always know how scared you are and know how you feel , so they make an effort to calm you down and explain things to you to show you that there is no pain or discomfort involved. And don't you worry, because a broken toe is not anywhere near the line of pain. Its really simple and won't hurt at all, and you will see that once you tell your parents and go to a doctor. Think of what i said , and you'd be thinking straight. Take care of yourself, and if there is any other help or advice you need, please be free to contact me with a private message or email me and i will give you my prompt reply.

since you've waited this long, next winter you will have arthritis all through the bones near the one you broke. it will be incredibly painful for the rest of your life.

second, because it's your big toe you absolutely need to go to the doctor. any other toe you're fine with taping it to the other ones, but your big toe controls balance. typically they cast these when they break and tell you to stay off them.

go to the doctor, now.

Normally, I would tell you to go to the doctor, because in all actuality, you should. However, I know all about not having health insurance and how much it costs out of pocket.

Last I knew, there isn't much of anything they can do about a broken toe. They might be able to brace it, but other than that... But I could be wrong.

When you go to the doctor, always expect to have your temperature, blood pressure, height, and weight done. X-ray? Possibly. Cast? Don't think they CAN cast a toe. Crutches? Possibly.

But I don't know for certain. I could be completely wrong.

Your best bet for advice from here is listen to the nurses we have. I know for certain of two. If you don't hear from Sabine or Nallie, ask one of them in their inboxes.

well put it this way, if you dont go to a doctor and it is broken and it heals wrong then it will be screwed up for life.

dont be scared. doctors are there to help you not hurt you. just trust them. yes show your parents, dont lie to them tell them the truth about how you hid it from them because truth is the most important thing. they will check your height weight and give you an xray. simple as that. your pobably wont have a cast or crutches. no it wont heal itself unless it has something to support it. the pain will not fade because it will get worse and worse everyday you keep on walking on it.
