advice
Okay, so I have been accepted into a camp for musical theatre, and it said I need a audition book. So I asked my vocal teacher, except she is all about the opera, and isn't really up to date with musical theatre. She tried her best and her and I put something together.
It said I need 2 contemporary musical theatre pieces (One ballad, one up-tempo), a song that shows off your skills (I chose a comical song, because I do that well haha), and 2 classical pieces (one ballad, one up-tempo)
Here's what we came up with:
Contemporary Ballad-
Contemporary Up-tempo:
song that shows off your skills: Diva's Lament, Spamolot
Classic ballad- Till There Was You, The Music Man
Classic Up-Tempo- Always True To You, Kiss Me Kate
For contemp. ballad I was thinking of something from the phantom of the opera but I'm not sure. I would like to do something different then what people are you use to, you know? But there isn't a lot of musicals that I know and the camp starts at the end of June so I want songs that I am comfortable with.
Any suggestions for songs? You can suggest for ones that I already have filled too.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your help!
PS- My vocal range is from C# to C# (3 octaves)
I would not recommend singing anything from Phantom of the Opera. It falls more into the pop/opera crossover category - It's not musical theatre but it's not opera. Either way, it's not really a good audition choice for anything.
I also wouldn't recommend singing anything from any of the huge blockbuster shows that have been in the media lately like "Wicked" or "Rent". All the judges will do is compare you to the original, and that's the last thing you want.
Contemporary Uptempo:
A Summer in Ohio (from "The Last 5 Years" by Jason Robert Brown)
Look At Me Now (from "The Wild Party" by Andrew Lippa)
Not For the Life of Me (from "Thoroughly Modern Millie" by Jeanine Tesori)
Contemporary Ballad:
Your Daddy's Son (from "Ragtime" by Stephen Flaherty)
All the Wasted Time (from "Parade" by Jason Robert Brown)
With Every Breath I Take (from "City of Angels" by Cy Coleman)
(Rating: 5) Thanks so much!
