im thinking about trying out for cheerleading (im in 8th grade) and so if i tryout its ganna be for the high school. i did it once but didnt get in - that was in like 5th grade ha. and im doing tumbling and stuff like working on back hand springs and back tucks ect. what are tips on making the squad .. like what do you have to do. pretty much can you tell me everything you know. thanks
Haha, i'll try and teach you everything I know. I.m me at Skkatanic because I can explain it easier, and you can ask me questions directly. This is what you need..
- Good jumps
- goood tumbling (at least a standing flipflop or running roundoff flipflop to make freshmen: keep in mind you still need other skills besides tumbling)
- tight motions and abiltiy to dance
- loud voice, facials, enthuastisum, cheerfullness, spirit, and you have to want it (pretty much selfexplaintory)
- know the positions for stunting (basing, back spoting, flying if you can, and front spoting- basing and backing are the most important)
For tumbling: keep taking classes. Work on your strength with your arms so you can get over on your flipflops, work on your leg strength so you can get high backs and eventually layouts, fulls, etc (working on a trampoline is good help). Ask a friend or anyone who can tumble to help you out, because I learned alot of my tumbling from my sister insted of a tumbling instructor. Also work on flexibility too, just because being flexible comes in handy when your a cheerleader. So do the splits as far down as you can go every night, and do a pike position on the ground and reach for your toes. Anything helps.
For jumps: Again, do flexibility. You should have good toe touches, double toe touches, left/right hurdlers, and pikes. The stronger your stomach the higher your jumps get. Jumps are hard to explain. So just look off pictures and learn! Also, you need to practice alottt. Heres a site with alot of good shots of jumps.

(Please do, browse around that site! Look at the photo albums, and tips for tryouts. Its a great site for anything you want to know about cheerleading)
Tight motions- work on strenght. Ask someone to help you out to make sure your motions are right before you get the hang of doing them the wrong way. Also, look at pictures cause they help the best.
for Stunting- get strong! if you want to base, learn the hand placements. There is two types of bases, secondary and main. There is a backspot, sometimes a front spot (not always), and of course a flyer. The main base holds the flyers right foot (usually flyers fly on their right foot so the main base stands on the flyers right side) at the heal and toe. The secondary base is then on the flyers left side holding the middle of the foot (inbetween the bases hands) and either the top of the flyers shoe or the wrist of the main base (there are different techenques). If the secondary base chooses to hold onto the bottem and top of the flyers foot instead of the main bases wrist, the secondary bases left hand holds on by the shoe laces and the right hand holds at the arch of the foot (middle). When cradling, both bases catch the flyers body and legs. The back spot is most important on catching because they catch the upper back, neck, and head. The backspot pushes up on either the flyers butt or waist while going into stunts. Position on the backspots differ. What I just explained is how do go up into a lib or any one footed stunt. Look at pictures for explaintions. Stunting is too hard to explain cause there is a big varity of things.
