every i look theres peple saying oh limewires illegal bla dee bla but i was thinkin the other day if its so illegal why is it still on the internet to be downloaded? surely the gov't would have taken it off by now. also its not illegal to send songs through msn and isnt limewire just like msn but on a much larger scale its all file sharing (you can chat with people on limewire btw if ya didnt know :P) so whats exaclty classed as illegal from limewire because the only decent excuse i can think of is its ok to download as long as you dont broadcast it on like public TV

Razhie, imagine I have a magical device that created an exact copy of things. Now if I used this device on your car, would I be stealing your car? No, I would not. The car company would be very upset because they didn't get any money, but I'm still not stealing the car. There's nothing unethical about doing that, and there's nothing unethical about downloading music. It would be unethical if I copied your car(or music) and sold it, because then I profit off of the company's R&D investment. So while it certainly is illegal(it's not called stealing or piracy, it's copyright infringement) to download copyrighted songs, it's not unethical.

No P2P application(like limewire) is illegal. The only way it would be illegal is if:
-It's only possible use is to infringe copyright, or
-The creators promote copyright infringement. Saying, for example, "download the latest songs, for free!"
Limewire LLC. is located outside of the USA anyways, on some small island, I think.

omg i went to log onto my account today when the computer starts and i clicked my username and it went right to my username! i have a password and i didnt have to type in the password.. somebody obviously changed my account and made it so i dont need a password. and whoever it was had easy access to my aim, myspace, yahoo, photobucket, and all of my accounts. it was definitely my parents snooping around. but i wanna catch them red handed so they cant deny it. whats proof that they did it besides the fact that my password was deleted? also, whoever it was deleted my history so i cant check if they went on any websites.. computer wizzes please help!

Privacy and security is very important, I put a lot of effort into securing my computer. Everyone has something to hide, and life is not meant to be transparent. BL4CKB3L7_F41RY, if you truly have nothing to hide, then I challenge you to publish your browsing history every day. If you're not comfortable with that, secure your computer; with your computer unsecured you're letting anyone see it.

On websites I use random characters as passwords, like:
BZ1vVl.HX?%D
These are hashed from a master password(which I use for nothing else) and the name of the site. For passwords where I don't have access to a hasher, I've memorized a series of passwords that I use. Some are longer than others, and I use a 20-digit password(composed of uppercase/lowercase, numbers and special characters) on really important things. If you do your passwords the same way I do, even if someone has access to your account, they can't do anything because you have different passwords for everything.

Windows security is very poor. It's crazy easy to break into an account, using the administrator account or a recovery service like this:
http://www.loginrecovery.com
Never rely on Windows to secure your account!

If you want to see what they are doing, you can download a keylogger. This has the unfortunate side effect of recording everything you do, too. I recommend "actual keylogger":
http://www.download.com/Actual-Keylogger/3000-2092_4-10541792.html?tag=tab_pub
Remember to turn it on before you leave the computer, or set it to run on startup.

Good luck!

1.can someone explain to me how it works?

2. & give me the website i can download it from?

3. do you reccomend it?

1- Here is a summary of how Limewire works, technically. If you just want to know how to operate it, read the manual. Limewire's protocol is called Gnutella. The first version was developed by Nullsoft, the same people who developed Winamp. It was later improved by various developers. As you use the gnutella network, you are connected to a handful of Ultrapeers. Ultrapeers are peers in the network that have a fast connection. You don't have any control over if you are an ultrapeer or not, and the network selects you automatically if it wants. These Ultrapeers are connected to hundreds of Leaves(normal users) and a handful of other Ultrapeers. When you search for a file, you ask the Ultrapeer. The Ultrapeer asks the Leaves connected to it, and then the other Ultrapeers connected to it(who in turn ask their Leaves and Ultrapeers until the entire network is searched). When you find a file you want and click "download", you are downloading directly from that Peer, just as you would from a website. The files *are not* transfered through the network, they go directly to you. This decentralized nature makes gnutella impossible to shut down, and it's also reasonably fast.

As the other columnists say, you download limewire from Limewire LLC's site, http://limewire.com .

I don't recommend limewire. Other applications are on the *exact same* gnutella network, which means you can download everything you can with limewire. I recommend frostwire if you just want access to gnutella and nothing else:
http://frostwire.com
It is exactly like limewire, and based on the same code, but it doesn't have ads and it's a little bit more user friendly.

**Limewire and the clients based on it are 100% absolutely free. If you pay for it, you have been scammed. There is a paid version of limewire, but all it does is remove the ads, it doesn't make it faster. Be aware that downloading pretty much anything from limewire is illegal, though the program itself is not.**

Whats the difference between the Army and the Army Reserve?

They serve less time and are less likely to go to war. Read this:

Wikipedia has been giving me problems, so here is a mirror:

people on this site think they are so mature and know everything but they don't know shit. (some do, most dont.) first of all, alot of people on this site believe that if they live a simple life and dont care about electronics and huge houses that they are better than people who care about their appearence and want nice things. just because i have some designer stuff doesnt mean im not a good person right?!! i shop at all of the expensive stores but its because i LIKE the clothes. if you like walmart thats good for you but i dont. and i dont give a f*** what the "popular" kids think. i do what i want and just because i want nice stuff and care about my looks doesnt mean im immature. alot of people on this site are prejudice. and prejudice means PRE JUDGING. you guys are pre judging teenagers just because they give a care about how they look or what they buy. and usually its the adults who critisize teenagers. but if you havent noticed alot of teenagers are smart and they dont always follow the crowd... these uninformed people give us teenagers sterotypes when they havent even met all of us. i say i shop at abercrombie and fitch and suddenly i have all these people calling me a follower. i know how i am and i dont follow. i lead. wow, so i like the same stores as other people. BIG DEAL. i dont smoke and drink and im not a slut. i just CARE about my appearence. deal with it! stop judging the teens on this site wrong and calling them whiny bitches because its not us, it's YOU.

opinions please. =)

I might as well ask you one last question here and get it over with. Where do I go from here? Do I contact someone or is this something I can fix on my own with a little research (and tome & effort haha)? Or is it something that I'll be spending money on and in the end won't really be fixable, so i'd be better off getting a new computer ?

Thank you!

Sorry I wasn't able to help :( .I recommend you get free tech support at http://protonic.com . There are professionals there that will surely be able to help. Mention you talked to me and did the things I suggested, and that I think it's a router problem. Good luck!

So I have a myspace tracker on my myspace page and it works. But I have heard people say that trackers are illegal to use on there and that people get deleted for using them. Is this true??

No, it's not illegal, and I doubt it's against Myspace's terms. What it probably does is load a unique picture on the tracker's server, which is recorded(that's what I would do, at least). If it has them downloading something, then it could be illegal.

ok where I wrote a (1) is the two options I was talking about.. You can either adjust the lever of security or choose the standard, recommended level of security.

Where I wrote a (2) are the "pictures" I spoke of, you can either click Internet, Local Intranet, "Trusted" Locations, or "Websites you don't trust" .

So you click on one of those four and then you click on one of the two options of security level below. But where are the buttons you were talking about... ? I tried first clickin "local intranet" and then "standard level" cause I thought that would be the same thing as "default level" but that didn't change anything. And then I did the same with the Safe and Unsafe zones, but it still didn't work?

Does this mean the problem is with the router and that I need to get proffessional help?

Thank you so much!

**Sorry I wasn't able to help :( . I recommend you ask this at http://protonic.com . They have professionals that will certainly be able to help you. Good luck!**

Yes, standard level is the same as default level. Nothing will appear to happen when you click it, but the settings are changed. Click each of the pictures and press "standard level" for each(in the end you click "standard level" 4 times, once for each picture). Then go to to the "advanced", and click(what will probably be) "standard level", near the bottom.

ok so the thing is my computer runs in another language (swedish) so i tried to follow your instructions to my best ability but it didnt really work, is there any where i could send you a picture of what comes up when i follow your instructions (i know how to print screen i just mean, where should i send it to you?)because i get to the security tab, but once i hit that four pictures come up and i get to chose on of them and they all have two options either "advanced options" or "standard options" i've pretty much tried clicking all of them but it won't work.

After you paste the print screen in paint and save it, upload it to http://imageshack.us and send me the direct link in a new personal question.

Standard gateway is a router. I really hope this isn't a router problem, because that will get complicated.

I'm happy to help. I'll keep working with you until you get this problem fixed!

I deleted a lot of information from a Microsoft Word document and saved the document. Then I turned off the computer. Now, I realized I should have never deleted all of that information! Is there a way to make the document the way it was?

Sorry, there is no way to fix that. System restore won't work(and may actually delete more files). System restore is not a time machine, and it only affects system and executable files. The data you've saved over has been overwritten, and is unrecoverable. :'(

ok so i was searching for some *cough cough* sexual tips for my boyfriend and i got a virus on my computer. a little box popped up in the corner of my screen and said "windows has detected a spyware infection" so i go through every virus/infection scan on my computer and it says i don't have a virus. now what am i supposed to do, my computer is slow and this infection box pops up every 5 seconds....litterally. help!!!

The popup itself is spyware/adware. Windows doesn't popup anything(or even know) when it's infected. You can fix it by running any antispyware, like spybot( http://spybot.info ), adaware( http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php ), or superantispyware( http://www.superantispyware.com ). System restore might not fix it, and it's unreliable, you should only use it after everything else fails. Good luck!

For about 1 YEAR NOW only SOME sites have been working on my computer. For example, Myspace.com works, Facebook.com does not work. Well, the main sites shows up, but when I try to log on it says "Site Not Found" same thing with hotmail.com, I get to the main page, but cannoty log on.

I have a cordless connection. We have two computer at home, my brother's computer is hooked up to the internet (with everything working) and mine is connected to his through this little cord that I plug into the USB, if that makes sense.

Anyways, we changed it around, and hooked mine up directly to the Internet-thingy and gave him the cordless - his still worked, but mine was the same - main page shows up, cannot log on.

So does that mean that something's wrong inside of my computer?

IE is refusing secure connections. Go to start, then run. Type:

inetcpl.cpl

--If you have IE7(the new upgrade) follow these instructions. If not, skip to the next block of instructions.

Go to the security tab. Click "reset all zones to default levels". Go to the "advanced" tab. Click "restore advanced settings"(NOT "reset")

--If you have IE6(the old version) follow these instructions.

Go to the security tab. Click "default level". Click "local intranet", then "default level". Click "trusted zones", then "default level". Click "restricted zones", then "default level". Go the the "advanced" tab, click "restore defaults".

That should fix it. If not, send me a private question and I'll see what I can do.

can you bring a Ipod, Game system like PSP or Nintendo DS, or a DVD player on the plane? i know they have rules of what to bring on the plane but can you bring these? i dont want to be borded the whole flight.

Yes. Just nothing that connects to the internet, or tries to connect to the internet. Don't use your PSP to search for connections.

Hi!

Does skype have spyware or anything? Can you get viruses from it?

I guess what I am asking is: Is it safe to install Skype on your computer?

Oh, and please tell me how you like skype and give me a review if you can. :)

Thank you!

**These are facts:
-Skype is closed source. No one can easily see if it contains spyware
-The same team that created Skype created KaZaA
-KaZaA is absolutely full of spyware. If you install KaZaA, your machine is toast
-There are certain programs call decompilers. Using a decompiler, you can get an idea of the code inside of a closed source application. Skype uses expensive and time-consuming methods to obfuscate the data from a decompiler. This is very unusual.

These facts lead me to believe that Skype is hiding something. I don't trust it and I won't until the source code is released.**

Skype is closed source, so it's impossible to know if it has malware. It's made by the same people who made KaZaA(which is full to the brim with malware), so I certainly don't trust it. The developers of it also took very great measures to make sure no one could disassemble it, it sounds to me like they're hiding something.

I got $150 for graduation .. would that be enough to buy a laptop maybee? haha if not it's cool, I just want one really bad. And if it could, where would I be able to get it? And about how much would it be? cause if its like $175 or something or a little more my mom would most likely let me get it.

No, there's no way you could buy a working laptop for that price. The cheapest you could buy new is $400. Used and working, maybe $200, probably $300.

I need some ideas for a unique, teenage girl's name. It's for a novel I'm writing.

You can use this name generator:
http://www.fakenamegenerator.com

The generator I was going to suggest was this:
http://www.seventhsanctum.com/index-name.php
but it seems to be down(check again when you read this).

what's the 1st most popular website in the world? it's not myspace and i googled it and it didn't help. thanks!

**The list below is accurate and based on scientific data. It's not my opinion.**

**I'm surprised so many people think the answer is Google. Yahoo has for years been set up as the default homepage for new computers, and I think that explains it(it could also be that Alexa, whose traffic ratings everyone uses, is owned by yahoo...). The results below are global. In the US, Google is second, with about 24% of all internet users visiting it daily(yahoo is about 26%).**

Accurate alexa rankings:
1: yahoo.com (is often set as homepage when a computer is bought, the non-so-technically-inclined leave it)
2: msn.com (same as yahoo, it's set as a homepage)
3: google.com (google is set as a homepage, and is also used to search by almost everyone)
4: youtube.com (not only a social networking site like myspace, it's the exclusive video sharing site)
5: live.com (the old hotmail is now live.com)
6: myspace.com
7: baidu.com (a Chinese search engine)
8: orkut.com (Google's myspace)
9: wikipedia.org
10: qq.com (Chinese IM and social networking site)
