1- Here is a summary of how Limewire works, technically. If you just want to know how to operate it, read the manual. Limewire's protocol is called Gnutella. The first version was developed by Nullsoft, the same people who developed Winamp. It was later improved by various developers. As you use the gnutella network, you are connected to a handful of Ultrapeers. Ultrapeers are peers in the network that have a fast connection. You don't have any control over if you are an ultrapeer or not, and the network selects you automatically if it wants. These Ultrapeers are connected to hundreds of Leaves(normal users) and a handful of other Ultrapeers. When you search for a file, you ask the Ultrapeer. The Ultrapeer asks the Leaves connected to it, and then the other Ultrapeers connected to it(who in turn ask their Leaves and Ultrapeers until the entire network is searched). When you find a file you want and click "download", you are downloading directly from that Peer, just as you would from a website. The files *are not* transfered through the network, they go directly to you. This decentralized nature makes gnutella impossible to shut down, and it's also reasonably fast.

As the other columnists say, you download limewire from Limewire LLC's site, [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) <limewire.com>.

I don't recommend limewire. Other applications are on the *exact same* gnutella network, which means you can download everything you can with limewire. I recommend frostwire if you just want access to gnutella and nothing else:

It is exactly like limewire, and based on the same code, but it doesn't have ads and it's a little bit more user friendly.

**Limewire and the clients based on it are 100% absolutely free. If you pay for it, you have been scammed. There is a paid version of limewire, but all it does is remove the ads, it doesn't make it faster. Be aware that downloading pretty much anything from limewire is illegal, though the program itself is not.**

Hi.

I just wanted to clarify what x3babyycakes had said.

Limewire itself is NOT illegal and it's not limited to just sharing files which makes it illegal. The only time you actually commit a crime is when you share something that is illegal. Otherwise you can share anything you want legally and safely. In addition to this I should also warn that downloading anything from limewire which is protected by copyright is also illegal. It is for this reason many choose to block any incoming connections (so you don't share any files at all with anyone on there).

hey

1.) you go into the side search bar & search for a song, artist, etc. and a new window pops up in limewire listing everything you found (sorta like google) and you click and download the one you want.

2.) www.limewire.com
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

3.) yes. i haven't found anything better than limewire. it's not illegal like some rumors say - only if you share files.

in response to feedback:
limewire is free.

www.limewire.com

basically it lets you download songs for free. You type in a song title, artist, or whatever. It gives you different results, and then you pick them and download them. I recommend it, because it is really easy to use. :]

good luck!
