I am trying to host an irc channel on a website i plan on creating. I have put the code for the channel I see in the source on the html page but it shows up blank with a small icon up top. How do i get it to work? Also, is there any host that will let me do it from scratch?

No, IRC is more complex than it seems, you shouldn't try to set up your own server. Advicenators has a dedicated server, and even they don't host their own IRC server. To make your own channel, first find an IRC network you want to be on. The best one for you is DALnet

Using your IRC client(mirc, chatzilla, etc), join irc.dal.net. In chatzilla you do:
/server irc.dal.net

Then create your channel:
/join #channel name
example:
/join #theymos

When you create it you're automatically given operator privileges. If you leave, anyone else can claim your channel, so you should register your channel with the network. First register your username:
/nickserv register password email address
example:
/nickserv register abc123 theymos@gmail.com

Then register your channel:
/chanserv register #channel password description
example:
/chanserv register #theymos 123abc theymos's channel

You need to be somewhat active in the channel to keep it, a few users a month at least.

To put a link to your channel on your site, use this URL(remove the space):
irc: //irc.dal.net:7000/your_channel_name
Use a standard html link to insert it into your page(remove space):
Visit my IRC channel!
This link will only work if the user has an IRC client installed. If they don't they'll get an error like "the browser doesn't understand the 'irc' protocol".

If your users don't have an IRC client, you can point them to www.dal.net(www. is necessary, dalnet follows old conventions), which has an IRC webchat on the right.

Good luck, and thanks for asking me this interesting question!

(I can help you with your website, and I might even be able to offer hosting, if you need it)

I have a problem with my keyboard where alot of the keys will not work, but only sometimes and I't does not seem to be a virus. How do I fix this problem?

Go to start, then run. Type this and press ok:

osk

If all the keys work on there, it's your keyboard; buy a new one. They're very cheap. If you have the same problem there, follow the instructions I give here:
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=500679
If that doesn't work, follow my guide on targeting an application-based problem:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=269&userboard_id=38985
If that doesn't work, make a new question with as much information about your computer as possible.

okay im sortof freaking out a bit.
my friend alex gave me a condom as a joke.
obviously im not going to use it, i'm too young.
so i hid it in my purse.
i woke up this morning to my mom looking around my room!
i think she was about to read my diary or something.
but now i'm SO scared she'll find the condom.
i didntg know what to do so i opened the condom and threw it into the road.
but now what do i do with the rapper?
wont they find it in the garbage?
aah! please help!

Take it out of the road, littering isn't nice :) . Put it in something you're going to throw away, like a box or bag, then put it into the outside garbage container(the one the truck picks up).

what are the withdrawal and side effects of Citalpram(Celexa)?

Side effects:

There aren't any withdrawl symptoms specific to citalopram, but you'll experience the withdrawal standard to that type of drug:

Hi! So I just got a new comp and I wanted to know everyone's opinion of limewire or kazaa or share files with others...do they come with viruses? What are your experiences with that? Should I download it..and if so, which one?

Do not under any circumstances use KaZaA! Unlike limewire and most other well-known P2P programs, KaZaA is bundled with 9 different types of malware that is automatically installed on your system. Here's my P2P guide:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=130&userboard_id=38985
I have a short explanation of the popular protocols in my latest(bottom) post at that link.

(Bearshare isn't actually a P2P network anymore, you have to pay. When it was a P2P network, before it was acquired, it operated on the same network as limewire)

are we generation x? what is that? and what came before that? gen a then b? or w??? is there going to be gen z soon?

No, if the names were in a linear order we would be z(y was just a few years before us, so you'll hear that a lot as well). Gen x was pretty much the only generation referred to with a letter like this. You'll rarely hear anyone refer to any generation after or before x.

So I bought an old computer at a garage sale. It has windows 98 plus on it. Ive been trying to get it up and running. So far, it boots into safe mode perfectly fine. However, if I try to start it up regularly, during the windows loading screen, it will blink, and then stop loading. The CD drive doesn't work, and since its in safe mode, I wouldn't have access to put in a flash drive or the internet, so any fix would have to fit on a floppy. Any idea what it could be?

There's no way to fix that, sorry :( . Normally I would recommend checking the event viewer, but 98 doesn't have that feature. In fact, there aren't very many diagnostic tools in 98 at all, which makes it almost impossible to fix any problem not automatically fixed by a reboot. My recommendation to you is to buy a cd-rom drive(very cheap) and install ubuntu or xubuntu(xubuntu for a low end PC, 512MB RAM or less):
http://ubuntu.com
http://www.xubuntu.org

These are gnu/linux distributions, so windows programs won't run on them, but it's the only modern OS that can run on a 98 PC and is fairly user-friendly. You'll be able to use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird right out of the box, and it's easy to install thousands of programs using the included package manager. I see from looking at your other questions(which are very interesting, by the way) that you have used linux already, so you should have no trouble.

Good luck!

What is it about pictures that take up so much space on the computer?

size?

layers?

colour?

It mostly has to do with the compression method. Physical size and complexity also play a part. A TIFF image, which is usually completely uncompressed, can take up 300MB for a single picture.

JPG is lossy, which means it takes out parts of the picture while compressing it. You'll get the smallest size with JPG, but the worst quality.

GIF is also lossy, but it's less noticeable.

PNG is the best overall format you can use, you never notice any loss from compression and it's very small

I've made some examples for you, this contains a TIFF file, and GIF, JPG, and PNG images converted from it with various levels of compression:
http://fileho.com/download/9b34a1413148/imagecomp.zip.html
(the ads on that page might be a bit NSFW, sorry about that)

The best thing to do is use JPG with medium compression for all of your real-life pictures. Use PNG for everything else. You can convert images with irfanview:
http://www.irfanview.com/

Just for fun, here's an image converted to the data: URI scheme. It's something like how your computer sees an image:
http://geocities.com/theymos/501471.html
If you use any browser other than IE, you can paste the text into your address bar and it'll show the picture.

Alright. I know you're wicked good with computers, so I felt like you should be the one I ask about this.

I used to be totally into web designing and everything, and now that it's summer again and there's not much to do, i'm going to go back to it. I used to have PSP and Photoshop and all that, but those were old computers so I got GIMPshop [for my laptop] instead. I don't even know if it's the "right" kind of program because I heard it might be a copy of the regular program.

My question is: for fonts, is there any way to like, make them look better? I mean, all I can do with the font is make it black or another color, but I can't do anything cool with it. I can't add gradients or anything to it and that makes it so that I don't even want a font on anything. Do you have any tips or anything about it? If you have msn, that'd be great. Just.. if you do, please post your msn email on here.

Thank you soo much if you can help me with this. I know you love designing websites and all, so yeah. :]

I'm not a GIMP or Photoshop expert, I focus mainly on the code, not the images.

GIMPshop is a version of the GIMP, which is an open source image manipulation program. The positions of options in GIMPshop are changed to more closely resemble Photoshop; this is pretty much the only change. I recommend it for people who are familiar with Photoshop already. I haven't used Photoshop much, so I use the regular GIMP. The GIMP can do everything Photoshop can, but it's often much more difficult. If you're not an open source fanatic like me, and you have a Photoshop liscense laying around, use it instead.

To add a gradient to text in the GIMP:

-Make text
-Use the "select regions by color" tool to select the text
-Select the "fill with a color gradient" tool
-Drag a line in the direction you want the gradient to go

Done. Check the gradient tool's options to change things around. IM info is on my column, but I probably won't have any helpful hints for you(I don't use the GIMP very often). Good luck!

if i have a ibook g4
and it has 512 mb of built in memory

is it possible to get a 1 gb of add on memory

would the computer let you do this?

not sure if that makes sense but thanks in advance.

Yes, that's possible. I have no clue how to install memory on an ibook manually; I've never even touched an Apple computer, so take it to wherever you bought it and they'll upgrade it for you.

My computer got insanely slow somewhere along the way.A few weeks ago I took thousands of songs off of my computer and transfered them onto my iPod,I deleted a bunch of programs I don't use,got rid of the games, cleaned up my HD,did a few spyware checks...and it still isn't much better.

What major things slow your computer down and how can I get it back to normal without buying new hardware.

Check out my slow computer guide:

My ex boyfriend's dad has a family site but he has this thing on it that reads IP addresses and the location of whoever looks at the site. I want to see a certain page on the site (it used to be about me) but I don't want him to know. Do proxy sites hide this?

Yes, they do. But I usually wouldn't go to the trouble. If you use DSL or dial-up, your IP address changes every time you connect to the internet, so it would be hard for them to identify you. The city location isn't reliable at, it shows me to be in texas, very far away from where I'm actually at. The only ways to reliably use IP address are:
-for a website owner to block someone
-for the government to track people down
And webmasters don't routinely browse through IP addresses anyways, the logs are incredibly boring.

If you want to always hide your IP without using a proxy site, use tor:
http://tor.eff.org
This will slow your connection down a lot, but is much more secure than a proxy site.

I want a drop down menu for my myspace profile but I want it with a black background and colored writing. (Just one fluroescent colour) What site can I use to do that or how can I do it?
Thankyou

Master_Betty's is overly complex, this is perfectly valid HTML, and will work fine:

1
2
3

That produces a pink box with bright green text which looks something like this.
░░░░░▼
------
1-----
2-----
3-----
.————
Modify these(in the , next to style=) to change colors:

background-color:box color
color:text color

Don't use quotes around the color names, color:"green" will not work. Preserve the semicolon(;) between the selectors, you need that.

I've used a horrible color scheme that makes my eyes bleed to show contrast, *please* change it before you use it.

You can use color names or hexadecimal color codes, here's my guide on codes:

Ok well I have a lot of cds and i used to have a lot of of really slim Cd cases to keep them in but I ran out.

I don't have any money to buy any mroe and even if I did they're so expensive now.

Like before they sold packs as long as a mini tv (which is A LOT) for a dollar.

now it's just like 4 slim cd cases or long up to half the size of my hand for a dollar.

And I always have to burn CDs for my relatives and I have no cases to put them in. What can i do?

I was thinking of wrapping it on paper but i don't know if it'll scratch the disk

Paper's fine. I use these sometimes:
http://www.papercdcase.com/

Discs are remarkably sturdy, you don't have to worry about scratching them.

is there some way i won't have to install the jdiskreport and still fix my temp folder?? or is that the only way???

You need to delete files off of your computer to make space. Jdiskreport will help you find large files, so you can do this more efficiently. You don't have to use it if you don't want. Remember the goal is to delete non-essential files anywhere on your computer, not just in the temp file.

[view]

so i'm trying to install the ESSP DOCK into my computer but it's keep on saying,

"The temp folder is on a drive that is full or inaccessible.Free up space on the drive or verify that you have written permission on the Temp folder."

how do i verify that i have written permission?? and where is the Temp folder located[in the c; file right]??

Don't try to delete anything in your temp folder(which is in C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temp), that can really mess things up, and it won't fix it. You need to free space on your disk. Use jdiskreport to find large files and delete ones you don't need:
http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/index.html
And clear system restores by going to "disk cleanup", then the "more options" tab.

If you have plenty of space, you need administrative privileges. Ask your administrator(whoever bought the computer) to set up the software for you.

If it still doesn't work, contact the support people for the software you're trying to install.
