I think my life experience is what qualifies me to write this column. I made every mistake imaginable. But have learned from them. Most important I still remember what it was like to be 12, 13, 14, 15, and so on. Currently I am a single mom, I have two wonderful boys. One in college. We are all happy emotionally. We love life, and know that you can too. I try to be the kind of parent that understands. I know that I can help you to understand where you parents are coming from, and help you get over the difficulties of being young. You can even have your parents write to me and I will help them to get over their fears and at least respect you and your feelings. sorry if it is long.
OK soo today my aunt picked us up to go to her house, me and my sister got into a fight (verablly)and i asked her if she would take me home, the hole ride in the car shes was sayign mena stuff like, " maybe this kinda stuff is why you doitn have friends". When we got home I just new she had called my dad. All day since thne hes been realy mad. Now liek 10 minutes ago he cmae hoem at 9 fr9om a meeting and brought home ice cream, he odes it alot so i knew what ice cream flavor was mine, i took it out of the back and dug in, my sister(9yrold) starting whing saying.. hey that wasm ine, my dad said to gve it to her, i was really mad and just said hey cna i please keep it, finally my dad ripped it out of my hands and gaver it to her, i stormed out of the room, he followed me then kida shoved me and kicked me(he always does it i menal iek 1 in 2 weeks) PLesae tell me what i should do

Well you are in a bad situation. Your sister sounds like a brat and she has learned that when she whines to any of the adults in your family she gets what she wants. ANd guess what they are enabeling her bad behavior by giving in to her. It is obvious that they get so angry, they hate it too, but they take it out on you. It really sucks. And no your dad should not be kicking you under any circumstances. What is up with him...bringing home ice cream one minute then getting angry and kicking you the next.
Well you do need a better way to handle this. Stay out of your sisters way, don't let her get to you, your older than her and you know better. Sure she is annoying, but if you get angry and react to her, then you are acting just like the adults. You will see if the whining and teasing and sassy talk don't work on you, she will stop. And the next time your parents get angry over her whining and crying, and they are mad at everyone and anyone except the kid who is doing the whining, then say. Dad, you get angry when she whines, you are just re=inforcing her behavior, or you are enabling her. She'll never stop. She has learned that she gets her way every time she does that.
Maybe it will bring some sense to their brains.
Meanwhile, don't act like her, and don't copy her.
She is the one who is going to be without friends. when she finds out that whining stuff doesn't work in the real world. Friends and acquaintences DO NOT have to put up with it. I read a lot of postings in this site from girls who are sick to death of their whiny friends and end up dropping them. And then there are the girls who write and ask....my friends are mad at me, I don't know why, maybe I whine a lot, but I don't know why no one will talk to me.
THey know, they just don't want to admit it.
You hang in there, you are a sensible girl, eventually you will grow up and you can leave home and leave them to themselves. Nothing is more important than your dignity and mutual respect. Your parents should respect you, and each other and everyone in the house and everyone in turn should be made to show respect to each other. Your parents are on the wrong track.

on this booklet about puberty..it says your first period should last between 3-7 days. but mine has lasted 12 days! and it's still kind of heavy..but it's dirty brown which should mean it's getting old. but is that weird? (link)

Well it is weird but it does not mean that there is a problem. Everyone mentrual cycles are differnt. If you have no other symptoms besides bleeding longer than expected, then I think all is well. If there were a problem, you would be in pain, I mean besides monthly cramps. Yes you are right that because the blood is brown, that it is old blood. I would not judge your cycle by your first menses. Now your next cycle should occur 28 days from the day this one started, so don't be surprised if you have your period again in two weeks. Some girls never get regulated and they go one the pill to help them regulate their periods. If you have other symptoms, let me know. I 'll do more research.

I wrote you probably yesterday asking about my stomach problems, and you advised me to buy some digestive enzymes to help speed up my digestive process. A while ago, my mom bought acidophilus pearls (by Enzymatic Therapy/Natural Medicines). Do you think that those will help?

Yes, but those will work in your large and small intestines. they won't help your stomache produce enough acid to digest food. You still need the digestive enzymes.
The acidophilus is very good for you. You especially need it, but everyone should take it for over all general health of our digestive tracts.
If you don't actually need the digestive enzymes, there is no harm in taking them. If there is no improvement in your bloating and gas, then the problem is not lack of digestive juices. But I still suspect that that is what it is. Only way to find out is to start taking them, and yes you can take both enzymes and acidophilus.
By the way, check the ingredients on the bottle, if that pill also contains lipase, amylase and protease, then THERE YOU GO. The digestive enzymes are there also, there is no harm in taking both. Take them with food.

Last night I felt a small, solid lump under my skin just behind my left ear, it only hurts slightly when I press it. I showed it to my Mum and she said it was nothing to worry about and that if it was still there by Monday then she would take me to the doctors. I am slightly worried about it as I have also been having headaches a lot in the past five days. I have also been feeling slightly nauseous. Could these be linked? What is wrong? (link)

Well, it's not a tumor. That would be under your skull, and you wouldn't be able to feel it.
It is red and inflammed and warm to the touch? that would indicate an infection. It could be a cysts. They are common in that area, and they are not deadly, but usually have to be removed by a doctor. DO you have oily hair/skin, if so, than I think it may be a cyst.
It could also be an ingrown hair. How big is the lump. size of dime, smaller?
Something like a blockage in an artery going to your brain would cause headaches, but you are so young, it is not likely, but anything is possible. If you put ice on it, does it go down? If it is an infection, fluid will rush to the site to help heal it. Cold ice causes the fluid to go away. So if you put ice on it and it goes down, that is good, because that means it is only an infection, but it still needs to be taken care of.

omg this might sound really mean and all..but it's my grandma. she lives with us and i love her, she's so sweet and she's great! but she gets so annoying! i know it's because she's old and all but one time, my teeth were hurting because i just got my braces tightened so i didn't eat a lot of dinner and my grandma kept on insisting for me to eat one of the soft foods but i also kind of wasn't hungry so i said no and she kept on insisting and i kept on telling her in the nice way and i finally got so mad that i kind of said it meanly and ran upstairs. then there she goes, bringing the food to my room! she does this kind of stuff ALL THE TIME! what can i do!!! Wow, I know exactly what you mean. My sons have the same problem with their nonne (grandmother in Italian). YOu see when she grew up, they were very very poor. Her father was a drunk, and if her mother didn't go to his factory and get his paycheck every friday before he got it....he would have it all spent on liquor at the bars, before he even got home. Then the mom and EIGHT KIDS had very little food for the week. So once their grandmother grew up and got married and had her own children....well she overfed all of them. And she tries the same with her grandkids. (my kids) I have explained this to them, and it does help for them to understand. I'll bet your grandmother grew up during the depression when there was not a lot of food to go around for everyone. She can't imagine not eating, and she can't imagine not being hungry. You can, and well there are plenty of times when humans just aren't hungry, and having your braces tightened is one of them, I know, my son went through the same thing.
Well you have already tried being nice about it, and that hasn't worked. I know you love your grandmother very much. This might work for next time, when you next have your braces tightened, see if the orthodontist can give you a note to bring home that says "only cold fluids until pain subsides". If there is one thing that people your grandmother's age believe is doctors. They believe every word that doctors say!
Also, DO you feel comfortable sitting her down and talking to her about her childhood and how it was. Kind of bring up the subject of food and see what she says. Then you can remind her that things are not like that today, and that there is plenty of food around and if anything, there is too much and Don;t you watch the news grandma, there is an obesity problem in this country, and doctors and nutrionists are trying to make us pay more attention to what we put in our mouths, and the last time I was at the doctor for my physical, I explained to him my diet, and he said that was just fine.
She won't stop bothering you about food altogether, but she will let up a little.
YOu can also try saying, Look grandma, I don't mind at all, when you remind me to eat. But I do mind when you remind me more than once. I am a big girl and know what I need to eat, and I know when I am not hungry.
Of course, you can't tell her this during a meal, try it at a different time, when food is not on any ones mind.
I hope this helps sweetie. I know grandparents can be a pain. But my boys just lost their nonne in April, and they both wish she were around again, to bug them about eating. They miss her.

ok this may sound gross but whatever.. ok my b/f has only ate out 1 girl and thats me. he had an other g/f but never ate her out and he was the 1st person that i let eat me out so there is no chance of him having any infection in his mouth if he ONLY ate me out and if i never let anyone eat me out..... am i right???????????

Well what kind of infection? A bacterial infection or and STD? Mouths are full of bacteria, so yes, I guess you could get a bacterial infection, which needs anti-biotics to clear it up. Can you get an STD from oral sex, more likely you would if you gave him oral sex, than he would. You may have another type of infection. That was not transmitted through sex.
You could have a yeast infection. heck even virgins can get a yeast infection.
A bacterial infection or STD symptoms would be
foul smelling discharge, buring upon urination, irritation of the vaginal tissue, redness, swelling, discomfort during sex, and eventually, discomfort all the time in the pelvic area, as the infection grows. IFYOU HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS YOU NEED ANTI-BIOTICS AND YOU CAN ONLY GET THEM FROM A DOCTOR. If you have a yeast infection, the symptoms are white dischage from vagina, looks cheesy, no odor, and very very itchy. This can be cleared up with MONISTAT which you can get at yourlocal drug store, Costs about $20.0o and works great.You can get immediate relief from the itching by putting plain yogurt on and in your vagina Yes, really. But it won't go away,you still need the Monistat.

Hey everyone, um, i have a really bad problem with looking at porn. the longest i have gone without looking at porn is 1 week. I really honestly think i am losing my faith. I am afraid that i am getting further and futher from God. A lot of bad things have been happening to me and my friends. I cuss a lot more. I do stuff, I look at porn more and more and i cannot stop. WEll since you are a christian, can I also assume that you are a virgin. What I want to say about porn, is that while it may be exciting to look at, (because you feel that you are being sneaky and getting away with something) it will ruin any chance you have of having a "normal" relationship in the future. Porn is all one sided. You are viewing images, movies, pictures, not real people. Not people you can touch or talk to or have a relationship. When you do meet a girl thatyou like, you have to be able to impress her with more than knowing what to do in bed. She will want to learn your true feelings and be able to reach your heart. In porno no love is involved. A nice girl, the kind that you would want to marry and have your children would be turned completely off by your interest in porn, even if it is past interest. You run the risk of turning back to it, afer marriage, because not every day of a relationship is wonderful, but is no reason to ruin it.And yes, I feel, and so do many family therapist, that being obsessed with internet porn is cheating. And in interfers with intimacy with the one that you love. You may not be in love right now, but when you are, the person that loves you will give themselves to you,and will want the same back. Pornography interfers with intimacy with real human beings.
Stop now before it is too late. Of course it's hard but anything worth doing is hard. Tell yourself that you are better than that.
And yes I do believe that if you do bad things, you will have bad luck. I know that I do good, selfless acts, acts of kindness, and I have very good luck.(of course that is not why I do it.)

when you go to get a physical.. sumtimes yoou have to pee in a cup right? well can they tell by ur urin if you have smoked weed.. cuz i thought that when you go they get a urin sample to see if you have done drugs?? or maybe im thinking of sumthing else.?? PLEASE I RATE HIGH

Well yes they can tell if you have smoked weed in your urine sample, but they would have to do special tests that cost a lot of money, and someone would have to pay for that.Since you are just getting physical, and your parents, or the insurance company is paying,I don't think they will be testing for drugs, unless your parents ask them too, and pay the extra fee. It can be as much as 75dollars.
When you get a physical and they ask for a urine sample they are check for two things. sugar in your urine which would tell them that you are a diabetic,and blook or perhaps white blood cells that would tell them that you have an infection.
If you have your period when you go, you have to tell them incase they do check for blood, and they find some, they will know that it came from your period.

I have a severe allergic reaction to using this product to treat acne. My face swelled, it itches, it's hot and burns and my skin is severely dry. What can I purchase over the counter to get rid of this reaction, without consulting a doctor?

Try putting a solution of cool water and baking soda on your fact to stop the reaction. That won't help your acne, mind you. it is just to stop the reaction from the product. Use lots of Baking soda it can't hurt you. Then read the ingredients in that product and don't use them again. I think it may be glycolic acid or salicylic acid that caused the reaction. Next time try a product that only contains benzoil peroxide, but be prepared for a reaction. And if that doesn't work, you can try a product that contains only sulfur. those are the best three ingredients that are used to control acne that can be obtained over the counter.

If you have this second baby, things will be harder for you, but I raised two boys by myself, and we all did OK. Yes it was hard, but I made the mistake, so I made the sacrifice. They kids ALWAYS come first.

You have chosen the most perfect career. Pharmacists are in short supply. You won't have any problem finding a good paying position when you are through with college and because you are in such demand, they will work around your schedule with the kids. What a great position to be in. Like it said it will be hard, but I know that you can do it. Since you are so young, you will have a quick recovery from the birth. I think you should get back to class right away. and finish the semester. I wish you a lot of luck, please keep in touch with me if you ever have questions or need some encouragement. I've read your answers to many questions, and I would firs like to tell you that you seem very sweet and very knowledgeable, and thank you (from, I'm sure, many people) for keeping this site up. I can see it helps many.
So, about me. (wow.) I'm fifteen right now, and two years ago (13) I was 'borderline anorexic'. This means, if you're not positive, that I did not have all of the clinical symptoms of an anorexic. I did have thetypical anorexic mindset, but I had not lost my menses, and I had only lost 23% of my body weight by the time tht people found out, and not 25%. I never got "proper" counseling, but I no longer am borderline anorexic.
For the past year, I get nauseous often, and very bloated from gases. I have no idea where all of this is coming from. Firs of all, I'm terrified of throwing up, and so I get panic attacks when I feel nauseous like this. I've been to doctors and to a gastrointerologist-- I've had sonograms, and drank the barium, and had a stomach-emptying test. My feces has been checked. Nothing is wrong with me. Originally, when my symptoms were only nausea, everyone kept telling me that it was 'in my head'-- apparently after being anorexic, you become more apt to lie.
But lately, because of my bloating (you can actually see my stomach is puffed out and tight, and hear the gases rumbling around my stomach,) they know that I'm not lying, or it's not all in my head.
Do you have any idea at all what this could be?

HI honey, and I am glad that you wrote, thank you for the encouragement. You sound very smart for 15. I did work for a naturopathic physician for 6 months. In between jobs, but I still help out there, and I learned so much. I have also taken some courses in nutrition. YOu are in luck because naturopathic doctors believe that all problems start in the gut, fix the gut and you will fix the problem. I think that during the time that you were anorexic, you messed up your hydrochloric acid valves. You have valves in your stomach that release hydrocloric acid so you can digest food. Without that acid, this is what happens to the food in your stomach. Imagine you left a tuna and mayo sandwich on Rye of course, in a moist dark container, unwrapped, and in the sun and it got to 98 degrees in there. And it just sat there, and sat there. Well I don't have to paint a picture. It would start to congeal and start to putrefy and smell, all this creates gas. You food is not being digested, it is just breaking down from the heat and time lapse. I think you need help digesting your food, and by that I don't mean Tums or Mylanta. Or even the new stuff PEPCID or the purple pill. Those pills turn off the valves too. (please stay away from them)
You need digestive enzymes. I don'think you will find them at the local drug store, you need to go to a health food store. They are not expensive. A good digestive enzyme has three ingredients. Lipase, protease and amylase.
These three ezymes are plant based. They are safe to take. They help your stomach digest carbs, proteins and fat. The basic components of all foods. They are not expensive. YOu may have to take ONE with each meal, or at least each large meal. Maybe for the rest of your life. If you are lactose intollerant, you may need additional enzymes for digesting dairy products. YOu can get those at the health food store also. If your mom wants, she can order them on line. But there are soo many, and soo many sites. Just about any health food store will have them and she and you may be able to talk to a clinical nutrionist and tell them what you told me and they will recommend the same thing. That is in case you want more assurance.
Yes it is safe to take digestive enzymes at your age. It is also very important for you to fix this problem, because digestive problems can lead to all kinds of auto-immune deficiencies. Not to mention Chron's disease, Irritible Bowel Syndrom and/or Diverticulitis. All very problematic to live with. (Sounds like you have already been through enough) If you want to learn more about that, go on the internet and type in "leaky gut syndrome" or ask the person at the health food store. YOu might also want to add an lacobacillius acidopholis capsul with bifidus. That is the stuff found in yogurt. It is also found natrually in your intestines. But if you don't have enough, you will have digestive problems.
I know this will work, I hope your mom is willing to try it, and don't ask me why the medical doctor didn't prescribe it. At the Medical Arts Center, (where I sometimes work) we get asked that all the time. We wish they would.
Hey,you know what, you are too young to be suffering with these problems. I do hope your mom and you follow this advice. So they can be cleared up.

Walking people's dogs for them. Everyone knows that their dogs need exercise. But everyone is too busy to do it, or too tired when they get home from work. Make up some flyers and pass them around in the neighbor hood where you know people. Stay away from creeps! Charge a fair fee, and look nice when you come to collect a dog for walking. I hope you won't have to do the pooper scooper thing, but that all depends on the state you are in. IN some it is a law.
YOu could give them baths too. And charge for that.

How exactly is being anorexic bad for you? People has said that if you're anorexic your body loses all these nutrients but what are the actual like 'symptoms' you get if you're anorexic. Besides dizzyness and fatigue.

Well it can scew up your electrolites balance. Things like potassium, salt, and sugar too which your brain needs. YOur body turns carbs into sugar. If you don't get enough of those, or too much of one, and not enough of the other, then you could have a heart attack. Most anorecix's die of heart failure. OF course they look dead long before they actually are.

i need help. i am 17 years old and i grew up in this really poor family downtown. we live in a small 4-roomed tralier and i go to a school where bullies pick on me all the time. i failed 4 years in a row becos my family couldnt afford a tutor for me becos i really needed one. i don't have any talents becos my family can't afford to send me to any classes. i just found out i am pregnant which caused me cervix cancer becosi recently got raped and beaten up by my boyfriend eric. i dont know what to do. i will kill myself. there is no more point in living. Well, here is what I think about your question. There are no trailers downtown. Downtowns are not zoned for trailer parks. Under the No Child Left BEhind Federal Act, children who are failing in school have to be provided tutors. Bullying and beating kids up is also against the law. Talent is something you just have. An artist just needs pencil and paper. Also, if you have some artistic talents you can develop them later in life. There is a lot of information on the internet about anything you might be interested in, so you can still develop your talents. Pregnancy does not cause cervical cancer. You can dump your boyfriend, and if he is beating you up, why wouldn't you. YOu can also call the police on him. Go to school and demand a tutor, and demand that they protect you from being beaten up by the bullies, or you will go to the police and then go to the newspaper. If your family is poor, you should be on state assistance, they will cover the cost of your pregnancy and delivery and should also treat you for the cervical cancer.
If you are having a baby, isn't that a reason to live. The baby did not ask for any of this?

PS this I know for sure. Having a boyfriend at your young age,who beats you up, does not develop talents, and does not help you out in school. Being poor also does not mean that you will flunk out in school. That is a disservice to all the poor kids who still did very well in school. If you are now to old for high school, then you should go to adult education classes and apply for your GED.
There is one sure fire way to end up poor like you say your parents are. Quit school, and have children out of wedlock. If you want to AT LEAST be better off then they are. FINISH HIGH SCHOOL, and wait until you get married before having children. And one more thing, and this I added. DON'T GO OUT WITH ANYHONE WHO HITS YOU; EVER. IT WON'T STOP, NO MATTER HOW SORRY THEY SAY THEY ARE. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. BUT ONLY YOU CAN STOP IT.

So my mom wrote to you. Well... I don't really know how to react to that. And for one thing I was half an hour away from a heat stroke so I could have kept playing for at least the rest of the inning. Throwing up is not that big of a deal, (but it did look pretty gross in the sand) but that was only because I ate a hot dog before the game.And what kind of idiot has a softball game at 11:00 ast night, huh? My mom didn't tell me she wrote to you and she hasn't really talked to me since I passed out in the waiting room. I don;t know what I'm saying. It could just be the pain meds talking right now. i'm the person who said i was looking for love this summer. well i went to my summer camp and all the guys here are ugly and i don't like any of them! i'm sorry this might sound conceited but ugly guys just aren't my thing. either normal looking or hot, but not ugly. what can i do!! (link)

Well I guess you will have to make the best of it. Aren't there a few weeks afer camp, before school starts? Maybe you will find someone when you are home. Love can come at any time, but you know it has to be the right person, and if that person is not at the camp, what can you do? There is still lots of summer left, try to have fun. You know what, love comes when you least expect it. It always seems to elude you when you are looking for it.

My mom only allows me to go on the Internet 2 times a week for 2 hours! Its unfair! Just because I accidently poured cold water over my sister in the shower. I did it ACCIDENTLY and my mom wouldnt believe me. Its so slack. She says im living a computer life and that ive got the disease where youre like living in a computer and u loose reality, but i DONT. Im only 13 for god's sake. Why does she act like that? Why does she hate me so much? Please help!! (link)

She is doing that because she loves you. And you do sound like a brat. So start behaving and she will trust you more. Pouring cold water on your sisters head may have been an accident THAT TIME. But ask yourself this, why didn't your mother believe you? Because you have done things like this before that thought they were funny, until you got caught and then just felt sorry for yourself. Grow up, act mature, be responsible, gain back your mother's trust, and then you will see......you will have a lot more freedom. Whining and complaining doesn't not get us the freedoms that we want. It just irritates
the people who are in charge.

Of course that means that they like you and quite possibly like you a lot. It is a pleasant feeling to start to like someone and have them on your mind all the time. It puts a smile on your face. So if you are pleased that this person is thinking of you, then be nice to them, and they will think even more of you.

No if you did not have sex, then you cannot be pregnant. But how informed are you about sex. Are you sure that you did not have sex? I know that might seem like a stupid question also. SO if he penetrated you and ejaculated, then you did have sex, but maybe he told you that, well, that that wasn't real sex. So now that you have that information....do you still agree that you did not have sex, and if not, then NO you cannot be pregnant.
Be sure you know what can make you pregnant and how to prevent it. A few minutes of pleasure for you and your boyfriend is not worth the pain and suffering that a child undergoes when he/she is brought into the world by people ill equipted to take care of them.

okay .... i have a really weird back lol
you see, i have a sticky - out spine
elaboration: even when i bend my back even the slightest way, it stickes out a lot. i cant wear t - shirts without a sweatshirt beacuse of this. i am pretty skinny, but there are lots of girls waaaay skinnier than me and their back doesnt even stick out if they bend over all the way! when i went to my physical my doctor told me it was simply because i was skinny. does anyone know what to make of this? Well, yes I think it is because you are skinny, and you have no muscle tone. Why don't you start a work out regimin where you start lifting weights, and build muscle, and then the muscles will grow and get sculpted, and you won't look bony.
