ok, so I can't pick up my report card from the school because I have to be away and the vice principal said it's ok for a friend to pick up my report card if I give him the permission note. But I don't know what I should write on the note, does it have to be professional? (link)

Probably the more professional the better.

is it true that humans are genetically inclined to be attracted to someone of a different race? (link)
|
I've never seen research on this, but I think history speaks against it. Up until the last few decades, the races were kept separate and any inter-mingling was definitely frowned upon. That's not just in America, but in other nations as well. We tend to be attracted to others who look like us, studies have shown. We tend to me most relaxed and confident in groups of people like us (as a society- I'm not saying all people are prejudiced).

Pardon me, as I am completely clueless. If anyone else knows more about transfers, please help me.
Is it possible for me to transfer from a normal college like, say, Rutgers to JHU after freshman year?
Does it not matter to get into a good college? because freshman year is when you have to take all your prerequisites anyway and theres no point in attending a good college because of all the pressure of high scores (in my case, i dont have good anything) when you can just transfer, right?
They require a GPA above a 3.0 and there is no minimum SAT/ACT score, whatever that means. Does that mean they require SAT II's, letter recommendations, and whatnot?
One last question, I don't understand the different umm departments? in colleges/universities. Can I get into Rutgers but not into Rutger's Pharmacy? Or are those two separate applications? If I get into plain Rutgers the first year undecided without a major, can I switch into JHU and get into the Medicine department? Or do I have to be extremely qualified and what does that mean? The transfer site for JHU says the transfer students are competitive? Is it even likely for me to have a chance at all? ("Due to space and availability" blah blah this is not a sure thing blah..)
Thank you for any help! I would appreciate it greatly. (link)
|
Really, you need to be speaking with an Admissions Counselor for JHU and asking all of these questions. Yes, usually you apply for a university, such as Rutgers, but then you have to apply separately to some of the colleges or departments. JHU Medical School is likely to be VERY competitive. It's one of the better medical schools in the nation. Possibly the best. To be "extremely qualified," you would likely have to show that you have a great G.P.A., you have recommendations from professors in the department, and you have done your extra-curriculars, such as sports and volunteer work. Whether you have a chance at all, I can't say. I know that college applicant pools in general are very large right now. Everyone seems to want to go, so they have the ability to pick and choose from those with the best recommendations, grade point averages, and extra-curriculars. Being your best at all those things are what I think you should concentrate on at your listed age of 15. When the summer before your senior year arrives, you should already have a list of a few schools you'd like to attend and which you think you could get in. Then you should visit those schools if it's possible. Then you should apply as soon as you are allowed. Another thing to realize is that sometimes starting out at one college and transferring to another is a waste of time and money because sometimes the college you're transferring to will not accept the credit from the other school - they will say that class is not one of their requirements, that the course is taught differently and is less vigorous or expansive, or that you have reached a limit on the maximum amount of hours you're able to transfer in.
The Admissions Counselors can help guide you through what you need to know. Contact Rutgers and JHU.
Good luck and work hard! Sabine

Ok I asked a question earlier about my throat. The doctor won't take me until tomorrow & I'm going crazy. I don't know what it is.
-I feel physically sick
-Heads heavy
-Throats extremely heavy; hurts if I move it & hurts if I touch my glands
-Glands in neck are swollen
-There's so much white on my tonsils/back of throat. It's basically covered
-It's so painful to eat/talk/swallow/do nothing. I feel my throat throbbing just sitting here
-Ear ache. My ears hurt when I swallow also.
-I'm starting to get a bit hot
Does anyone have any idea what this is? I tried 2 cups of tea, tylenol cold/sore throat liquid medicine, hard candies, ludens, vick's throat spray, gargling, hot soup, icecream, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas what this is or any other remedies that might work?
Thanks!! (link)

The white sounds like strep throat. The only thing that will cure that is antibiotics. Gargle with warm salt water because it will help make you more comfortable and can help kill the bacteria. There's nothing else, really, you can do. :( Sometime strep throat comes with a headache, stomachache, and rash as well as the symptoms you mentioned. I hope your appointment goes well.

my health teacher said we all have some kind of mental disorder? what? can someone help explain or back her up on this? (link)
|
Well, I've heard that theory. Really, Freud said we're all neurotic, but it's the psychotic ones that are really mentally ill. More of us than not have some sort of phobia or some neurosis (anxiety, depression, etc). We have an adjustment disorder, etc. Some say this is just the human condition and is what makes us all have different interests, likes, dislikes, temperaments, and personalities.

ive had the hiccups almost all day today. could this be serious? what causes hiccups? (link)
|
Hiccups are rhythmic spasms of your diaphragm (the muscle that helps you breathe). They can be caused by many things, the most common of which is simple GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. If you get acid reflux, that can cause irritation which leads to hiccups. Antacids can help, breathing exercises can help (being conscious of your breathing and trying to breath deeply and evenly). Doctors have some medicines which can help, but usually what you need is just time for your nerve to calm down and your diaphragm to relax. I hope they're gone by now. If not, you sould probably call a doctor tomorrow and see if s/he wants to see you. This is all assuming that you haven't had any recent medical procedures such as an EGD and that you're not having any other symptoms, such as throwing up blood.
Best wishes for you. Sabine

Tomorrow I'll be starting my first day volunteering at a hospital. Most of the patients are elderly. I was wondering what I should talk to them about. I'm terrible at talking to adults as it begins with, so I'm a bit nervous as to what I should say to the patients. I do know senior citizens enjoy talking about their life, so I will ask them about that, but what else should I say? I don't think I really want to talk about my life, so what are other good conversations I can have? Thanks in advance. (link)
|
I would ask what their hobbies are. The LOLs (Little Old Ladies) will likely want to talk about sewing, quilting, flower arranging, etc. The men might want to talk about cars, etc. There are universal questions like "what's your favorite movie?" You could ask about their families or pictures they may have up in their rooms. Mainly just letting them know you're there to listen if they want to talk about anything is going to be helpful.
It's a good thing to help someone. Be confident that what you are doing will help both them and yourself and try not to be nervous.

I HATE IT! and im always getting teased liek ohh your so blonde. but really i dont care about that. thats not the thing that bothers me. but like i really want to dye it. but my mom keeps saying my hair is gorgeous nad all this stuff. but like ireally dont like it. its disgusting. how can i make my mom let my dye it. and im also sick of people saying ohh your too young to dye your hair. but i dont care! so many people have died their hair already and then when i say that oh you only want to do it because everyone else is...its not true! i want it done. but how cna i let my mom understand. i hate my hair. my dad says its fine. but my moms like aadshfjkasd! urrg. i have tried sitting down with her but hten it jsut gets in a fight. help! (link)
|
Have you ever proposed to her that, in the same way she uses makeup and clothing to change between work and home, you would like something to change with your hair? Ask her to go with you to the store to pick out a temporary color that will wash out in a few weeks. There are a lot of them. You can choose together if there's a strawberry blonde, a light brown, or possibly raven black color that you'd like to try. There's also the possibility of not changing the base color but adding highlights. Tell her you'd just like to play with your appearance a little and it doesn't need to be drastic or permanent.
Be forewarned, however, that people will tease you no matter what color your hair is. If they teased you before about being blonde, they will tease you later about still being blonde underneath or about being "fake." If people want to tease you, they will find something - no matter what.
Good luck.

I'm twenty years older than you and I don't even get all of the ins and outs of this war. The timeline people will think is relevant includes some embassy bombings and the bombing of a US battleship in Oman in the 1990's by al Queda. Al Queda is a group of terrorists or freedom fighters, depending on whose side you are on, who want to punish America and consider America to be an "Evil Empire" and to be an affront to God (as interpreted through their Islamic extremist beliefs). Relevant to this war is a history of war in the Middle East, including Jordan, Egypt, Palastein, and Israel. Many groups accuse America of showing preference to the Israelis. Indeed, we have sanctioned (stopped giving financial assistance to and banned trade with) Palastein and their Arab peoples. We have not punished Israel for the same issues and we tend to turn a blind eye when Israel invades Palasteinian territories. Some people think it's because Jews are prominent, wealthy citizens in America (some take that to the extreme and say Jews own all the power in America). Some people think it's because we feel guilt that we didn't stop the Holocaust sooner. Some think we just hate Arabs. I think it's probably a blend of the above.
Anyway, Al Queda, thinking we are evil, and in protest of our apparent favoritism toward the Israelis and against their Arab enemies, declared war on the US. There were the embassy bombings in the 1990's and then there was the first bombing of the World Trade Center, I believe in 1999. Our government spied on Al Queda and worked in secret to destablize them until the 2001 WTC bombings. Some reports say that our government was aware of the perported bombings and just allowed them to happen in order to sway American's opinions toward going to war with Arabian nations.
Bush pretended the WTC hijackings/bombings were linked to Iraq and invaded on the pretense that Sadaam Hussein was trying to produce nuclear weapons or, weapons of mass destruction. He knew that to be false before he went in, according to testimony given before congress. He wanted to depose Sadaam Hussein because Hussein was a horrible leader - he killed a fraction of his population because they were members of the wrong tribe, he ruled ruthlessly, he destabilized the political relations in the mideast (like with Syria, Lebanon, and Iran), and he had that history of giving Gerorge Bush the First the middle finger during the First Gulf War, when Sadaam invaded our alli and oil supplier, Kuwait.
Bush pretended that his goal was to bring democracy to Iraq. That seems like a noble goal, but in Iraq, the leader is thought to have been chosen by God and their religious ideology does not allow for the people to choose a leader through voting. It's not what they think they're supposed to do. Now, by deposing Hussein and allowing the new government of his country to hang him publicly, there has been quite a stir in Iraq. The people who were in power under Hussein were from a tribe that is a minority in number. Those people are now fighting for their lives against the formerly oppressed majority (those two factions come from different tribes and are ethnically different). By removing Hussein, we have taken away some oppression, but we have allowed the factions to start a bloody scramble for power and wealth.
Back to Afghanistan, we started the war there to take out Al Queda and it's supporter, the Taliban. The Taliban is a fundamentalist religious organization who rules/d Afghanistan according to their interpretation of Islamic rules. They oppress women and rule very strictly based upon the Koran (Islamic Bible). For example, under the Taliban, women must be covered completely except for their eyes in public. They cannot go out of the house without a male relative. Their fathers arrange their marrages and women are not allowed to go to school, work, or drive. The woman is property. She can be divorced by her husband without cause simply by him saying "I divorce thee" three times in a row. Then she has to go back to her family and beg for a living. Accused shoplifters are punished by having a hand chopped off. Women accused of cheating on their husbands are stoned to death in public. Now that the Taliban's grasp on the country is weakened, Afghanistan is back to what it was before the Taliban took over - they supply a large percentage of the poppy flowers which are used to make illegal morphine, heroin, and other opiate drugs for the whole world market. We have killed a whole lot of Afghanistanis and caused a lot of trouble there all on the basis that Osama bin Ladin was there when the WTC attacks were planned and that the Taliban was helping Al Queda.
Now, Osama bin Ladin was the mastermind behind the WTC attacks and was in Afghanistan, likely. He was a Saudi Arabian billionaire who was frustrated with the fact that his own country and the ruling family, the Sauds, were friendly with the "Evil Empire" of the US and traded with them even though we supported the mortal enemy of the Arabs, the Jews (or Israelis). There are good reasons for the Palastenians to hate the Jews. The main one is that they have been in a land war for decades and the country of Israel was *created* out of land taken from Arab countries in the 1950s after the Holocaust and WWII on the basis that the Old Testament calls the Jews "God's chosen people" and promises them the land that used to be theirs but which was taken over centuries ago by Arabs. There are a lot of families displaced and people justifiably upset by this action. Anyway, it turned out the Bin Ladin fled into Pakistan, a neighboring country, from Afghanistan while the US was still stinging from 9/11 and trying to figure out who was responsible and what to do about it. At one point, US forces had him tracked down, but waited a few hours so the Pakistani army could swoop in and arrest Bin Ladin, but he slipped away before they could arrest him. He's now in hiding and does a new videotape of himself to be broadcast urging the Arabs to continue fighting the Evil Empire every couple of years. He is still allegedly planning attacks.
So in this war, we have destabilized Iraq and are having problems now with Iran, Syria, and Pakistan. We have made it so that the farmers of Afghanistan, in order to survive, have turned back to their old industry of growing poppies for the drug trade. We have alienated a whole bunch of allies, such as the French, and embarassed ourselves with things like Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib (prisons where we have violated human rights of people who were never given trials for the crimes they are suspected of). Scooter Libby, one of Bush's advisors, is convicted of lying to congress about something only vaguely related to the war, but it's pretty much believed to be true that we were all lied to about the supposed intelligence on weapons of mass destruction that were thought to be in Iraq, but were not found when we invaded the country.
It's a mess. It's cost hundreds of thousands of lives and billions of dollars to fight this war and the country is no "safer for democracy" than it was when we started. Osama bin Ladin is tucked safely away. I can't believe that in six years's time a country with a military like ours can't find and destroy any one man on the planet.
Some people think the wars were orchestrated not to make the world safe for democracy, but to depose leaders we don't trust and install some who would be more favorable to us - like sell us oil at cheaper prices.
There are too many reports and facts out there to pore through. We will likely never find out the objective truth. Just keep trying to understand. Everything that I have said is the truth as I understand it, but may not be the objective truth. One lesson you will learn in life is that perception means a lot and I can be telling the truth as I know it and someone else can be telling the truth as s/he knows it, with neither party lying, and the stories won't match up. Even when we get the truth, it is rarely the whole truth. All we can do is try to figure out what makes sense to us. It's a tough job and some people just quit trying to sort through the lies and half-truths. They give up and say they're not into politics or it doesn't matter what they think or how they feel.
I think we should all try to understand, try to find the truth, and keep voting (when you can).

i have a question, obviously. Today I woke up with 2 bumps near my ear. (not my face, but the skull and hair part) one is 1/4 of an inch long and etends outward a little less than that. 1/8 of an inch and the other is about half of that, it is located about 1 inch below the bigger one. I don't have any headaches, or anything unusual with my body. It only hurts when I touch it, also. I'd like to know if there could be anything wrong with just the bump? it doesn't seem like there is, but then again.. you never know. I know people could tell me to see a doctor, but if anyone's ever heard of anything like it or know anything about that, please tell me! thanks. (link)
|
These sound like swollen lymph nodes. You should simply keep tabs on them and see your doctor if they haven't gone away in 2 weeks.
Lymph nodes trap bacteria and viruses and encapsulate them. They get swollen sometimes with lymph fluid and with foreign material and sometimes it takes a while to clear the stuff out. Some people think you should massage swollen lymph nodes (lymphatic drainage massage) and apply hot packs. I don't think that's always a good idea. Your body has isolated something there for a reason and if you let it free before the white cells have had a chance to neutralize the threat, you may set the bad thing lose on your body.
So I'd just watch them for a couple of weeks and don't do anything unless they turn painful.

i know what believe in but i dont know if there is a religion for that.
i believe in a higher being of some sort, but i dont exactly know what it is.
i do and always have believed in reincarnation, that when you die, your soul lives on until it has reached peace with the earth.
i believe the body should remain clean and nothing unnatural should go in it. like that's why i dont believe in taking most medicines.
i believe that everything happens for a rason, whether it be good or bad.
i pray sometimes, i just dont know exactly what i pray to.
does this sound like a religion you practice or know of?
what do you believe in? (link)

Check out Universalist Unitarianism. They don't necessarily believe what you do, but their stated goal is to support your search for your own truth.
Some of their principles are the same as your stated beliefs.

I've been stuck between a few career choices and I finally found something I want to do, but I'm not sure if there is a term for it. If so, can someone lead me to what the name for it would be called and maybe some sites that help to describe the career so I can be sure? Thanks in advance. Anyway, here is what I would like to do. (By the way, I'm 16 and a senior once August rolls around, I also live in NC if that helps)
I have always wanted to work with teaching. Mainly the high school level because I also have always been interested in helping troubled teens. Such as teens that have been through abuse or that are dealing with depression or something that could be traumatizing. I guess although I've always thought of myself as sometime becoming a teacher and just kind of helping students but even though I think I'd make a good teacher, it's mainly because I want to help teens. I've thought about being a child psychiatrist, but here's what I really want to do. (Maybe it would just be considered a councilor?) For example, when kids have been abused I want to be the type of person they come and talk to and I'll be able to help them in some way whether it be informing the proper people (authorities) or if it's something less serious (just got out of a really bad relationship) I could be the perosn that helps them get through it. So kind of a broad subject of what I would help them with. I don't want to have to prescribe medicine or come up with some illness they might have because I would be too afraid of getting it wrong (personal experience is the cause of that fear). I just want to be the type of person to listen and maybe help them get through it... Is there such a thing or would I have to be able to figure out what may or may not be wrong with them.
What about a high school guidance councilor. I know that they help students with what they need to succeed in college and career choices out side of school and that they also are there when students need someone to talk to (which is what I want to do pretty much - be there to listen and talk and give advice I guess when people need someone).
Do you think that a school guidance councilor would be good for something like that? Or is there something else in the field of psychology or psychology that would work. Or because I've always thought I'd end up as a teacher maybe something with teaching I could do that would still allow me to help teens like that?
Sorry for the length, I just have a lot of thoughts jumbled in my head right now and I'm having trouble thinking of what career best suits my interests. Again, thanks in advance! (link)
|
Do you see the humor in a teen asking for career advice because she thinks she might want to be a high school guidance counselor? ;)
There are a few ways you could go. First, you could be a school guidance counselor. Second, you could be a school psychologist (they don't diagnose illness or prescribe drugs) or you could be an educational psychologist (though they focus more on the psychology of learning and therapies to help those with learning disabilities), I think.
Probably the best thing to do would be to ask your high school guidance counselor, because it's a good bet that she knows her job and the jobs of related fields and can tell you which jobs seem to fit what you want to do. I know, you'll probably have to wait until at least late Aug, maybe September to speak with her. :( Maybe, though, there's someone you can speak with or maybe you can ask for an appointment during school registration in late summer, etc. You will likely also want to check out education classes at colleges because I believe that in order to be a school guidance counselor, you take a lot of the same courses as teachers. Check into programs for that on the web. Maybe even check out the National Education Association (teacher's union) and see if your parent(s) know anyone in the field you can speak with. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to get from where you are to the career point of your choice.
You seem to be a bright young woman, since you're graduating a year early. I think you'll be able to find a lot of information. :)
Good luck,
Sabine

I have a weird question. Lets say one day you have a lot of variety of foods. Fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs, milk, cereal, etc. Then, by the end of the day you have a cookie or two. Would that be ok to do since it would be balancing it out? If you had a lot of nutrients & good foods throughout the day, does a treat hurt it? or does it balance it & not really do anything? Thanks!! (link)
|
When people refer to a balanced diet, they're talking about the proper amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in addition to the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals. Balanced does not mean some amount of junk food and some nutritious food. That being said, a couple of cookies or something, while they don't contribute to a balanced diet, are not usually harmful. It's all about portion control and regulating your diet. A treat once in a while is not usually harmful and might be helpful in keeping you satisfied and motivated to eat properly the rest of the time.

for the past couple days i have had really bad constipation. i was wondering what types of foods cause this and what foods get rid of it? (link)
|
You probably are eating too many processed foods or fast foods and not enough fruits and vegetables. Be sure to get plenty of fiber, which is available in the 5-7 fruits and veggies you're supposed to eat every day, as well as whole grains. In addition, you should drink plenty of water, though science has no conclusive amount of water that's required for every person. It's more about what works for your body.
Over-the-counter remedies (other than diet) for constipation include the stimulant laxatives such as dulcolax and ex-lax (which may give you cramps), soluble fiber drinks and wafers such as Benefiber or Metamucil (which may give you gas due to psillium), and saline laxatives such as magnesium citrate. There's also Milk of Magnesia, which can be pretty gentle, and a new option called Miralax. I used to give Miralax to my baby (per her Doctor's orders). It's easy on your system and easy to take. It's not absorbed into your body, but just softens the stool. It's very safe and doesn't usually cause cramping, nausea, or gas. You can use it as needed, if you don't need it every day. I think you get about 30 doses for about $10.
Again, get plenty of water, fruits and veggies, and don't forget to exercise because lack of exercise alone can stop you up.
Best of luck,
Sabine

Alright. I have this costume picnic thing, and I'm supposed to dress as a character from Peter Pan. However, I DON'T want to be Wendy, Tiger Lily or Tinkerbell. I know at least 3 girls doing each one. I was thinking I could do a pirate costume, and wear a renessance type outfit with a sword... what do you think? (link)

Yeah, a pirate outfit would be great. Also, it would be easy and less popular, I think, to be one of the lost boys. You could also be Wendy's mom or Nana, the dog.
Have fun!

what if you made out with a guy in party and when you were drunk is that slutty or what? this is your second or third time
(link)
|
It MAY be called trashy by those wishing to call names, but 'slutty' is used to describe someone who has intercourse with many people. Other uses of the word are more about insulting someone than really commenting on his or her sex life. I don't think slutty is the correct term for it. Flirty, trashy, or possibly even 'she's a tease' might be accurate.

Try to bear with me, this might not make much sense.
When I look in the mirror, my legs and thighs look very nice and slim. However, when I physically look down at my legs, they seem fatter. Is it just the angle that I'm looking at them, that make them seem bigger? Or is the illusion in the mirror? Or are they supposed to look the same both ways, and I'm just crazy?
Basically, which view of my thighs is more accurate?
Kudos to anyone who understood that =)
thanks in advance (link)
|
Have you ever tried looking down at your cheeks when you smile? They may seem huge. Looking down at yourself does not give an accurate picture of your body due to the way perspective changes our perception. The mirror is the more representatioal image because you are seeing every part of you in relation to other parts.

Hello Sabine, I was given Clamovid 625 (amoxycillin [as trihydrate] and clavulanic acid [as potassium clavulanate]) for my throat infection.
I've taken 5 of these antibiotics now (I have to take 10 in total) but I don't feel any improvement at all. In fact, I feel that it's getting worse. Is there something wrong with the medication?
please reply asap. Thank you. (link)
|
Hi. Call your doctor. Clamovid is sold in the US as Clavamox and I have only ever seen it used in veterinary applications.
Every antibiotic is suited to different types of bacteria. In the case of Clamovid, it can be used to treat the following:
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
The combination of amoxicillin, a bactericidal penicillin antibiotics with a broad spectrum of activity, and clavulanic acid, an irreversible beta-lactamase inhibitor forming stable, inactive complexes with the enzymes, thereby protecting amoxicillin from degradation, possesses a broad spectrum of activity. The activity of the combination is extended from microorganisms susceptible to amoxicillin alone to also include amoxicillin-resistant beta-lactamase producing organisms:
* Gram-positive aerobes (S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, S. viridans, S. bovis, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, Listeria sp., Enterococcus sp.),
* Gram-negative aerobes (H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli, Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp., N. gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis, Pasteurella multocida),
* Anaerobes (Peptococcus sp., Peptostreptococcus sp., Clostridium sp., Bacteroides sp., Actinomyces israellii).
I would assume you don't have one of these bacteria - it's likely a different type. Alternately, it could be one of these things which has already been exposed to Clamovid and is therefore already resistant to its effects or you could be dealing with a viral throat infection (which will not respond to any antibiotics and must run its course).
Did your physician do a throat culture? If so, s/he might have identified which organism is causing the problem by now. It may be an organism not covered by the two agents in Clamovid. Either way, your physician can tell you whether you need to allow more time for the Clamovid to work (which I don't think is likely the problem) or whether you need to switch to a different antibiotic.
:( I'm sorry you're not feeling better. I hope you can get the right medicine.
Take care.

Well, I'm a married woman and *I* don't get the attraction. I've had it done before and just the thought of the fluids and all the bacteria both in his mouth and in my vagina really gross me out! Don't get me wrong - I kiss and we have sex, but down germs are supposed to stay down and up germs up, if you ask me. That's just me. Yes, there can be a funky smell, but it turns some guys on. And if you clean often and well enough, there's not much smell at all. A lot of women love oral. I just don't like it. I don't think it's wrong - it's just my opinion. If he really wants to do it, I suggest that you could give it at least a try, maybe right after you've showered together or something. If you don't like it, though, you don't have to do it.
