They can be caused by many things, the most common of which is simple GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. If you get acid reflux, that can cause irritation which leads to hiccups. Antacids can help, breathing exercises can help (being conscious of your breathing and trying to breath deeply and evenly). Doctors have some medicines which can help, but usually what you need is just time for your nerve to calm down and your diaphragm to relax. I hope they're gone by now. If not, you sould probably call a doctor tomorrow and see if s/he wants to see you. This is all assuming that you haven't had any recent medical procedures such as an EGD and that you're not having any other symptoms, such as throwing up blood.

"Hiccups may be caused by pressure to the phrenic nerve by other anatomical structures, or rarely by tumors and certain kidney disease."
An agitated nerve is nothing to be worried about; it is, in fact, what causes the tingling sensation in your legs when you sit cross-legged for a while.

I know that eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual. If it happens for days at a time then I would go to the doctor just to get it checked out.
