Be sure to get plenty of fiber, which is available in the 5-7 fruits and veggies you're supposed to eat every day, as well as whole grains. In addition, you should drink plenty of water, though science has no conclusive amount of water that's required for every person. It's more about what works for your body.
Over-the-counter remedies (other than diet) for constipation include the stimulant laxatives such as dulcolax and ex-lax (which may give you cramps), soluble fiber drinks and wafers such as Benefiber or Metamucil (which may give you gas due to psillium), and saline laxatives such as magnesium citrate. There's also Milk of Magnesia, which can be pretty gentle, and a new option called Miralax. I used to give Miralax to my baby (per her Doctor's orders). It's easy on your system and easy to take. It's not absorbed into your body, but just softens the stool. It's very safe and doesn't usually cause cramping, nausea, or gas. You can use it as needed, if you don't need it every day. I think you get about 30 doses for about $10.
Again, get plenty of water, fruits and veggies, and don't forget to exercise because lack of exercise alone can stop you up.
