Question Posted Wednesday April 9 2014, 1:48 pm

I always stutter when i read hindi(I was born and live in India)but I am a good reader when I read english or french. Please give me a solution because it is very embarrassing when I have to read in front of the whole class.

Here is an iconic moment from a TV show here in Britain- a reality TV show about a school in Yorkshire. I don't know if your stammer is as bad as this boys' but watch it. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

He reads out loud whilst listening to music.

Is your stutter like that? If it is, try this technique. If not... then practise your reading more often?
Is Hindi your first language? Or your 2nd/3rd? If you're just learning I'm sure stuttering is fine, but if its a first language this may be different.

I completely feel you. I used stutter a lot when I would read in front of the class. What I do now, which I think really helps, is to read slower. Don't rush and read fast. Take it down a notch and read at a slower pace. If you also sort of read ahead a little, you will see the word before you read it, which I think helps. But its no big deal if you stutter. You'll get over it! Not sure if this helps at all, but that's what I do, and now I only stumble over like, one word a paragraph :) Good luck reading! Hope you figure something out!

Probably, the reason of your stammer is that whenever you read in your native language, you are completely conscious of your own mistakes or your accent. This is sometimes lowered, if you will, when you get to speak another language. In your case, English or French. My recommendation is to try to lower your level of anxiety when you are to speak in front of the class, try to be confident of your speech and don't think others will judge you if you make any mistake. Try to focus on what you have to read, not on the way your voice sounds, and most of all, take your time to read clearly and loud
