Embarrassing Situation(Library Book)

Question Posted Friday November 29 2013, 5:17 pm

I love to read. I visited the school library a lot and read books ALWAYS returning them on time. I checked a book out and was going to return it but a rule stated we couldn't go to our lockers in the morning or at lunch. So, I tried to figure out a way to get it back but I never had enough time. I just got a letter from the librarian (whos always nice) saying that I couldn't use the library anymore. My parents got really mad and I don't know what to do because I am so embarrassed and afraid that he'll yell at me....What do I do?

Also, if I tell him what I explained he probably won't believe me..(Plus we only get 4 minutes between each class.

Let me just say your school sucks and you'd be better off transferring. What's the point of even having a locker if you can't hardly use it. It's also worth a shot to try talking to the librarian. How long have you had the book?

I too do not understand this rule on lockers. The whole purpose of having a locker is so you can store your books between classes so not to have to carry all your class books throughout the day. When I went to high school back in the sixties my school was the size of a small community college and was held in two buildings. Yet I was able to get to my locker several times a day including lunch time with only 4 minutes between classes, for same building classes and an extra minute for those of us who had to change buildings. There was an archway of the roadway between the two buildings which meant you went up one flight to cross over to the other building.

As for using the library. This was done on your own time. If you had a study period you could request to use the library. Sometimes your English teachers would take you to the library during class time to check out books for a book report the teacher might want written. Any other use of the library was before or after school. So I am a little confused as to when you had time to checkout the book but did not have the time to check it back in.

The rule about not using your locker during school hours might be for security reason, If so I don't agree with it. If a student is bent on mayhem and needs to get to their locker a rule is not going to keep them from it. All that rule does is keep good student honest just as a good lock keeps honest people honest.

People who believe rules and laws protect us from those who seek to harm us or cause some type of mayhem are living in a fools paradise. Criminals are criminals because they do not obey laws. Reality says most every parent is a criminal. You don't believe me. Speed limits are laws. How many parents exceed the posted speed limits. Almost 100% at sometime or another. This makes them a criminal all though not a felony type criminal as they broke a law by speeding.

Just as sure as I am that just about every parent exceeds the posted speed limits at sometime or another. The rule against going to one locker is broken by some student(s) on a daily basis. If that student is bent on mayhem or destruction that rule won't prevent it.

Parents and students alike should protest to the Board of Education to have this rule rescinded. There is no reason a student should be forced to carry all their class books around during the day with their lock being a place to store their coats. What about kids that bring their lunch to school are they forced to carry them around all day?

I know from when my girls were in high school that very little time is given to get to next class.

So, I am not sure I understand then when you had time to go to the library in the first place to even check out books if there isn't time between classes? Did you check out books at the beginning of the day before school started, during your lunch time, or after school? What ever time worked for check out should have worked for returning it too. Unless the rule for not going to lockers in the morning or lunch was made after. I do not understand that rule. What is the purpose of the locker if you can not use it until the end of the day? There must be something you didn't explain clearly enough.

If you had to get the library book from your locker at the end of the day, take it home with you and bring it again with you in the morning to return it to the library before your first class, or carry it with you to all your classes until lunchtime and return it then, that could have worked.
If it all boils down to this crazy rule, then perhaps it's time for the students and their parents to create a petition asking that the rule about not going to the lockers be canceled or revised or lengthen the amount of time between classes so that students have a little more breathing space to do important things between classes. And Heavens! When the heck do they expect you to take a quick bathroom break? Certainly not between classes.

The easy way of not fighting against school policy and library policy to get them changed is to get a card at the local public library and deal with them...many students do, its way easier, you can go evenings, and weekends to check out and return or they have book drops if you are returning one at times they are closed.

Did you let any of your teachers or staff in the office or a counselor know what your situation was?
