Question Posted Wednesday August 21 2013, 10:10 pm
I'm a thirteen year old girl. This question is for people ages 21 and up, but I suppose 18 is ok too.
These days, schools are really drilling the message into us that we shouldn't drink beer or take drugs and everything else like that (I don't know if they did that when you were little). So what I'm concerned about is that right now I am SOOOO against alcohal. I won't TOUCH a can of beer or a bottle of wine. All of the adults on both sides of my family drink but I am totally against it. I'm afraid even though I despise alcohal now, that I'll just start drinking or be pressured into drinkimg when I'm older.
Were you this way when you were younger? If so did you start drinking, even just a little? Do you think I'll start when I'm legally old enough? Please help I'm soooo scared.
There's no point in worrying about it now. You're not going to try alcohol unless you stop despising it. Odds just are that you won't despise it forever.
But again, there's no point in worrying because when you do try it you won't feel the way about it you do now, and you won't be scared or hateful about it anymore.
Friendly word of advice. If/when you try alcohol, try it with a few trusted friends who don't mind drinking. Not like at a party out somewhere. Everyone has a tolerance. Some are lightweights, some are not. It's a good idea to learn your tolerances and know how much how fast is too much too fast. I hated alcohol when I was younger. Mostly because of what I was taught. My whole family drank and I didn't have a problem with them doing it, I just never would. But I grew up, got involved with the wrong friends and would go drink and get wasted. So I can totally understand why they would teach you this.
I don't think you'll be pressured into it when you are older. I mean maybe if you go out with friends and they all start to drink, they'll be like, "Come on!" but I know tons of people who just say that they don't drink and their friends leave it at that.
I don't drink anymore, because I'm 18 and everyone who bothers with drinking at my age just gets wasted. I've seen some horrible things happen because of alcohol and don't want to get involved in it anymore.
I think when you're older, you'll have a better understanding and you'll either just not drink or drink casually. Like if you go out, you'll just have one glass. So really, it's all about you and your beliefs. If you think you can get swayed into peer pressure, then you probably will. So you should probably work on that if you really don't want that when you are older. [ lightoftruth's advice column | Ask lightoftruth A Question ]

Most kids do it because they know they aren't allowed too. I have family members who do a lot of drinking, more than they should but I never had the urge. I wanted to be successful and ambitious. I didn't drink and I am happy with that choice. It doesn't make you are more cool, it just makes you more unhealthy. I want to live a long and healthy life. You can choose to do it or not, it is ultimately your choice. Don't let others influence into a path you don't want. It's your life, live it how you choose. I am 26, well over the drinking age so trust me, it's not as grand as everyone makes it out to be. The people you drink with aren't always going to be there so focus on what you want to do, not what others tell you to do. [ Advicelady6798's advice column | Ask Advicelady6798 A Question ]

Young people between your age and 21 and sometimes even older have few inhibitions to begin with. Alcohol lowers ones inhibitions making them feel they are even more invincible.
In the movie "TOP GUN" Tom Cruise plays a fighter pilot. In one scene his commanding officer says to him; "Son your mind is writing checks your body can't cash." This is what alcohol does to young people who think it is cool to drink to excess and get wasted.
Many times these young people would be wasted and get behind the wheel of a car. Generally when they did so I would have to go to work for it was almost certain they would wreck and as a fire fighter I or others like me would have to try and rescue them.
I have to tell you it is no fun pulling broken bodies out of wrecked cars. It hurts us as much as it hurts your parents for as we work to save lives those of us my age think, by the grace of god this isn't my child.
This is what concerns us about alcohol and young people. It is a legal substance for those of us that are old enough to consume it. There is nothing to be afraid of as long as you realize it is a substance that should be used in moderation.
The fact that your parents and other family members drink should not upset you or scare you. They are adults and I will assume they drink responsibly. The key world here is responsible. As long as anyone who is old enough drinks in moderation then there is no reason to be scared of alcohol. It is wrong to scare you into behaving or not doing something.
What if I didn't want you to wear lipstick and told you it was poison and would slowly kill you. Would that be right of me to do so. Would it be right of the school to do so. You know it is not poison for you see all the adult women wearing lipstick so how could what I be saying be true.
Scaring you into not doing something is wrong, especially when eventually you will be old enough to do that something. Will you eventually change you mind and try alcohol? Probably just remember that getting wasted has it's consequences. It feels good for a bit, then you get sick to your stomach and in the morning you wish you had died, though that feeling eventually passes. So when you do try alcohol do so in moderation.
