Brandi_S answered Thursday January 24 2013, 2:48 pm: I have Bipolar 1 Disorder. No, I don't have two personalities. However, before treatment it sometimes seemed like I was acting like another person, because of my behavior during different swings.
It's not just "mood swings" It is a chemical imbalance in your brain causing you to feel and behave certain ways at an given time.
You need to see a therapist to see if you do have Bipolar Disorder. If you do, they can refer you to a doctor who specializes in treating mental illness. [ Brandi_S's advice column | Ask Brandi_S A Question ]
adviceman49 answered Thursday January 24 2013, 10:43 am: Bipolar Disorder is also known as "Manic Depression" or "Manic Depressive Disorder". This is a major depressive illness which can only be diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist and in some cases a psychologists help for talk therapy.
There are different forms or degrees of manic depression. Most are treated with a variety of drugs and people effected can lead a normal life if they maintain there medication.
One characteristic of manic depression is being totally happy and care free one minute and totally depressed, even suicidal the next minute. It may seem as if a person has a split personality as the difference between the happy high and the severe low is acute.
If someone has told you that you appear to be bipolar or you think you may be then you need to be screened by a doctor. Preferably a Board Certified Psychiatrist. By being Board Certified to practice psychiatry this make them the best doctor to treat a person with this illness as they have studied psychiatry in a fellowship program and past required tests to be board certified. In many states any doctor who did a residency in psychiatry may be allowed to practice as a psychiatrist.
Psychiatry is much to complicated field and this illness is much to complicated not to be treated by the best available doctor. So if you feel you are bipolar, have been told you are, or feel suicidal see a doctor immediately. You can go to any hospital Emergency room for treatment and will not be turned away for any reason or you can call 911 for help. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]
sierramuckridge answered Wednesday January 23 2013, 8:01 pm: Hi sweetie, bipolar does not mean you have multiple personalities, having multiple personalities would mean you have a Dissociative Identity Disorder. Being bipolar can sometimes go hand in hand with this, but are two very different things.
Being bipolar means you have mood swings, you can be happy and fine for a while, then you can be aggravated and mad in a blink of an eye.
Razhie answered Wednesday January 23 2013, 6:19 pm: Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder where the person has huge high-energy, manic phases, and then also very low, depressive, low-energy phases. It’s not a split personality at all. True split personality disorders are really, really uncommon, and each personality is separate with its own memories. The personalities usually have no idea the other personalities even exist. A person who suffers from a bipolar disorder is only one personality; they are just experiencing really drastic, even dangerously drastic, highs and lows.
For most people who suffer from bipolar disorder, these different phases last for weeks, and usually months - not hours or days. So although some people joking call others bipolar, often they just mean 'moody' not that the person actually has bipolar disorder.
Unless a doctor or mental health professional suggested you might be bipolar, you probably aren't.
It’s really important to remember that bipolar disorder is a real, serious mood disorder , and you shouldn’t go around just calling people bipolar as a joke, or as an insult. It’s not nice, and it’s not accurate. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
solidadvice4teens answered Wednesday January 23 2013, 5:17 pm: Who told you were bipolar? Unless it's a doctor you most certainly aren't. Let them diagnose you. Being bipolar means that you have depression plus constant mood swings from depressed to elated that keep cycling back and forth.
On top of the mood swings you will have if left untreated grandiose thinking, irrational thought and beliefs and outright delusions. If that isn't happening to you than you are alright. If you had it you couldn't function at all until the manic episodes were treated.
People with bipolar do not have split personalities unless they have been diagnosed by a psychiatrist with multiple mental health issues. If concerned you have an issue like that or bipolar as described above consult a doctor. [ solidadvice4teens's advice column | Ask solidadvice4teens A Question ]
