Scared to get a blood test.

Question Posted Sunday August 14 2011, 7:00 pm

After a year of not so promiscuous promiscuity I was told that I had. and treated for, Chlamydia in April. I'm all clear and dandy now, but I've been panicking because I have to get my yearly blood test soon and I'm scared I might have HIV. I have been with the same partner for 8 months and he was a virgin before me and he assures me that if I have HIV - which means he also has it - we will be there for each other. This doesn't help. I panic at the thought of even getting tested because I'm scared to find out the results. What should I do?

Additional info, added Sunday August 14 2011, 7:32 pm:
I was not sleeping around while I was in my relationship, by the way. I simply hadn't gotten around to getting my pap test until April. We have been together since January. He didn't have the Chlamydia, but we were both treated for it regardless.

I have never had somebody ejaculate in my vagina, but I have in my mouth.

I think it is normal to fear the worst when we feel that the worst may befall us. The problem is that the fear of the unknown is worse than actually finding out. Until you know for sure the very worse the odds can be of the worse news befalling you are 50/50. Those are not bad odds. Not knowing has a paralyzing effect on every thing we do.

A bad example of this is some surgery I needed on my knee. I had put this off as long as I could. Why I'm not really all that sure, I've had knee surgery before. If I were to give words to my fear I think it would be that I would wake up to find that the doctor was unable to repair the injury and had to replace the knee joint. Long story short I had the surgery, I woke up to find the doctor repaired the knee and the following morning I was able to put partial weight on it. Two days later I was walking without crutches. Much faster then the previous two surgeries.

All that my fears and delays did was cause me mental anguish and physical pain. Your worries are causing you mental anguish. A simple blood test and 24 more hours of mental anguish and you will have your answers. The chances are just as good that you will not be HIV positive. In the future make sure to take the proper precautions to stay that way.

The First thing you should do is relax, because when you do you feel more in tune with your body. Even though your scared of seeing the results, it's 50/50 you might not have HIV but you might have something worse then that, you never know. So I think the best thing to do is to get the test as fast as you can because then you won't have to be thinking about it 24/7. And your partner will be there for you.

Does your yearly blood test include HIV screening? Most don't. Were you screened for HIV when you were diagnosed with chlamydia? A full STI test is normally standard follow up when you have a positive diagnosis of one...

You should ask. If it doesn't, you should get screened for HIV in addition to your normal blood test.

The worst thing you could do is get so scarred and stressed that you never find out. It's scary to call up the doctor, but you really need to make certian your blood test Includes HIV screening.
