I took Microgynon 30 for three years and never had a single problem with it. I also know of several of my friends who are on it. In the UK, Microgynon is usually the first brand doctors will prescribe to teenage/young girls as it has minimal side effects and is 'safe'. The only reason I stopped taking it was because I didn't need to be on it.

Your doctor will prescribe the best Pill for you and will look at several factors, such as your blood pressure, lifestyle and reason for taking it (birth control, acne, periods etc).

I use the depo shot and I love it. My only flaw about it is I get sharp pains in my stucmoch alot I was told in most people that stops after 6 months if you even have it. I choose to not stop my medicine even though i have the pain because i have no period havent got pregnant. and mostly i have no period. and i only get the shot every 3 months.

I've used Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which I really liked- no weight gain and cleared up my skin. Unfortunately, I had a 'rare but serious' side effect and had to switch, am now taking Levora and it's okay, but has made me gain a little weight. Usually the doctor doesn't ask what kind you'd like, as they are more educated about it.

LM answered Friday July 22 2011, 3:17 pm:
The pill you ultimately take depends on a few things, including:
- Your current periods
- Cycle you want
- Whether or not you've recently had a baby

I took Yaz for about 3 years, and recently switched to Loestrin24fe. They're low-dose pills, which seems to be a popular trend. Many of the pills advertised are this type and cost more because they're brand-name. They have a different dosing schedule too. Instead of 21 days of active pills and 7 reminder pills, there's 24 active and 4 reminders. This helps many people who have long and/or heavy periods. If you don't have any particular complaints and simply want the pill for contraception, ask whoever is prescribing it for a generic to save on the cost.

There are also pill types now that reduce the number of periods you have per year, such as Seasonique. The downside to these is that if you were to miss pills and become pregnant, you wouldn't know right away. Your doctor can help you decide if this would be right for you.

If you just had a baby your doctor will prescribe you a "mini-pill" which only contains one hormone, which is safe to your baby. But if you're not in this situation it's not an issue.

A doctor can help decide which pill is right for you as well, so take advantage of their expertise :) Also, the pill will only work properly if you take it at the same time every day. Setting a reminder alarm on your cell phone is wicked helpful for many women.

I started on Loestrin, which worked really well. I had to switch because of health insurance issues and now I use Gildess. It works about the same.

Honestly, the best thing to do, if you're thinking about going on birth control... Go to the OBGYN and ask your doctor to recommend something for you. That's what I did and I'm pretty happy.
