I'm so embarrassed about the way I look down there. I don't think it is normal?

Question Posted Saturday May 21 2011, 10:44 pm

So, I'm 15

I really don't like the way I look "down there". I've never had sex, but I do masturbate and this is really hard to talk about, because I don't talk about it.

I don't know if it's nothing or what but, something sticks out, outside of my vagina and I really don't know what it is, if it's my clitoris or what.. I'm just scared it's abnormal, I don't want to go to the doctor and be embarrassed..I don't believe I have an std because I'm still a virgin..will some one please help me out here? ://

When a girl goes through puberty, her labia minora (inner lips) are one thing that change. They become larger and stick out between her labia majora (outer lips).

The collective noun for a woman's external genitals is "vulva." The area around the vulva is sometimes called the "pubic area."

The "vagina" is the internal passage that menstrual blood flows from, that receives the penis, and through which babies are born.

In the vulva, the order of things from front to back is: (1) clitoris (bump that feels good), (2) urinary meatus (little hole for pee), (3) vagina (big hole for penis, etc.). Next in line, but outside the vulva, is (4) the anus (big hole for poop). The labia minora are flaps of skin on both sides of the vagina and urinary meatus and which meet at the clitoris. The labia majora are soft bulges outside the labia minora.

It is important to masturbate because it teaches you what brings you pleasure and what it feels like to get aroused and have an orgasm. When you eventually start having sexual intercourse, that knowledge will help you have a more satisfying experience.

The most popular ways are fingers, vibrator, dildo, Shower Massage, bathtub faucet, and humping a pillow. Most people start in their teen years, but a lucky few get started as early as 5 or 6 when they discover it by accident.

Here's the thing: vagina's are weird. In fact, all genitalia are weird! If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting a penis or another vagina yet, then that's probably why you think yours is strange. It's the only one you've come in contact with. And no one's is like anyone else's. There is a huge range for what is deemed normal and you most likely fit well within it. If I were you, I would find a friend who has had a pap smear. If she trusted the doctor who did it, you should go in and have a chat with her. If you don't have someone like that to talk to, you should go to a sex health clinic. Talk to a nurse, that's what those clinics are there for. And don't be shy about going to a clinic, I'm sure it would be a pleasure for someone to lend confidence to a girl like you. Just make sure that your visit is completely confidential and you don't have to worry about anyone finding out. Most importantly, you have to feel good about the way you look "down there". If you're masturbating, you feel good about the way you feel "down there". That's the most important step. But you really need to talk about it because you will presumably want to share an experience with someone someday and you will want to be confident when that happens so you can feel good about it :)

Nope, nothing abnormal at all. So relax. As an earlier commenter said, probably just long labia, which is really common.

As for your vagina generally, there is nothing dirty or disgusting about it. I often think it's rather like a flower. So it's beautiful. No need to be self conscious. And everybody masturbates. And I mean EVERYBODY. So you aren't unique there, either.

I once saw a documentary that said there are 5 different types of vagina's. Okay so what, fact is regardless of how they look they all work the same and to be honest they are all beautiful.

As a guy I can tell you I have never seen an ugly vagina. While I have a preference for unshaven pubic bushes I like the vagina itself to be shaved and that is as far as I go in describing for anyone my preference, although I do like long labias.

If you have started through puberty and are having your periods then it is also time you see a gynecologist for yearly female check ups. If you're concerned that whatever you are seeing down there is wrong it would be noticed by the doctor during your exam. If you have not had a gynecological check up yet I would suggest you talk to your mother about arranging for your first visit. This is an important part of women's health and something you need to have done.

I think that is your clitoris or hymen. Believe me, Your future lover will desire your vagina no matter what. This seems to be an issue with young women having problems accepting the beauty of their genitals. I do not think it is abnormal and there is nothing to be scared of. If you are concerned then ask an older woman to check and reassure you that there is nothing abnormal. Going through puberty with all the body changes are challenging and sometimes scary. Just admire your own beauty of your entire body without comparing to others. By loving yourself, you make yourself look better and attractive. Your only as pretty as you feel. Hope the best for you!

I feel the same way sometimes.

With me, I have something 'sticking out'. One of my labia's is long and looks like I have something hanging down.

If it was your clitoris hanging, then you would feel a lot of pleasure/feeling when you touched that part. However, it likely isn't your clitoris because that is usually hooded by the labias and toward the top of the vagina.

If it doesn't cause you pain and has always been like this, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you would like to make an appointment with a gynecologist, it would be fine to discuss it. You can ask them all the questions you have about sex and your body.

I've had sex before and my boyfriend hasn't mentioned anything about it. Most guys don't look directly at your vagina during intimate activities. They probably wouldn't even know if something was abnormal.

And you may not even be abnormal. What I learned in health class is that every vagina can look different. Different sizes, different colors, unique to the person. Don't stress about it, odds are that you are perfectly normal.

Good luck,

-Abby
