How to get my friend to live a healthier lifestyle
Question Posted Sunday April 3 2011, 5:24 pm
My friend is really out of shape. She's very uncoordinated, so she doesn't play sports. Almost all of her time during the summer was spent sitting in front of the TV. I've tried to get her motivated to do some excersize, but she won't. She gets stressed easily and she gets frustrated easily, so I think thats a part of why she doesn't want to excersize......maybe because she'll get frustrated when she can't do something. Sometimes I get a little worried about her because she is so out of shape....I don't mean to be rude when I say that....but it's true. How can I motivate her to live a healthier lifestyle by excersizing without nagging her and sounding like I'm being bossy?

Tell her to get a job that is moderately physically demanding and the problem will fix itself. The upside of this method is her making money while getting fit, instead of spending money on things that probably wont leaving her broke and fat. You cannot help someone who isn't willing to help themselves. If your friend wants too loose the weight then she has to find it within herself to get off the couch and do something about it. Nobody can force her to loose weight, I'm not saying you do but talking about it isn't going to motivate her it will only annoy the crap out of her. If you care about her well being then I would sit down and discuss it with her but repeatedly bringing up the subject is going to get her to bitch out. Do it in a non-obvious way by asking her to go on a walk at a beach or a park but just don't make it so obvious. [ Xui's advice column | Ask Xui A Question ]

I understand it's part of our nature to care about those close to us, but if she's stubborn, all you can do is wait. Maybe she'll come through and she'll know you're the one to go to. Ask her one day if she wants to go walk to the store or to the park with you, or invite her to some type of activity which requires movement. If it's not just herself doing the work, she'll probably feel more motivated to keep up with you. It would be even better if you could get a whole group together to do something active, like swimming (although it'd be better indoors, if it's cold out) or attending some type of class (Zumba is always great!)
