I have been having my period for like 2 years now and I always use pads. My best friend is really pressuring me to wear tampons so we can go swimming next week but I'm afraid to. I really just don't want to do it. I've read things like it can hurt and I really don't want my vagina parts to hurt because I put a tampon in during my period. Im happy with using pads. Is that normal to be afraid to use tampons?
JesusFreakGirl answered Monday July 26 2010, 9:42 pm: Its normal to be afraid. I had had my period for five years before I first used a tampon. Tampons only hurt to put in if you do it wrong or are not relaxed. Read the instructions on the box, and make sure the srting is firmly attached. Don't wear tampons for too long though, because they are really a sort of plug, keeping all the discharge and blood inside of you. So put one in before you go swimming, then take it out when you're done and just wear pads. Swimming is the only time I use tampons. Its practical. Tell her you'll go with her to go swimming, but won't swim, or she can get some patience and wait until you CAN go swimming. Putting a tampon in can hurt if you put it in the wrong way. Just because their are tampons, doesn't mean you have to use them. I'm 19, and didn't start using them until about two years ago.Do what you feel is best. Here is a website to help you with using tampons in the future when you decide to: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
DearAbby92 answered Saturday July 24 2010, 12:24 pm: First off, don't let your friend pressure you into anything. It's a personal decision and it should be whatever you are comfortable with.
Coming from experience, I had a lot of trouble first using tampons. Most girls start off that way. But now that I use them regularly I couldn't imagine going back to pads. They are so much more comfortable.
Honestly the first time using one it did hurt but it gets better after practice and if you're willing to deal with that it may be worth it. I've read that you can use petroleum jelly or insert for the first time in the bathtub to make it easier to go in, or lying down on my bed worked for me.
Follow instructions and give it a shot if you're ready. You can always go back to using pads if you don't like it. But I reccommend trying more then once because you will get used to it.
DetectiveFingerling answered Saturday July 24 2010, 11:43 am: It is 100% normal to feel that way. Usually when you first use one it feels uncomfortable but it's because you're not used to wearing them and you're aware of it's presence. After using them for a short while you become accustomed to them and don't even give it a second thought.
Don't try them for the first time just before swimming, though. You won't be used to them at all and it'll upset the good time you could be having.
Go to the store and buy some tampons, regular size fits most, and use them. They come with a handy little instructional paper on the inside on or on the box that tell you exactly how to use them. Pretty soon you'll be so used to it that it'll be second nature to you.
If regular doesn't work (which it usually does) then try smaller ones. Remember though, it's going to feel kind of tight where you're not used to it yet. Give it a try before switching sizes.
Just change them frequently (as directed) or more-so if you have a heavy flow.
