I've had my boy cat for 2 years now. He's great but I got this new job where I'm away from the house like all day long. I don't want him to get lonely because he's a really social cat and so I thought of getting him a friend at the shelter here.
I went to the shelter but they only have male cats right now because it isn't a very big place. They were encouraging me to get one so that they could open up a spot for another animal but I just don't know because they're males too.
I heard that if you put two males together that they will fight and end up hurt or one will even kill the other one. I don't know if that's true because I don't know much about cats, to be honest. I couldn't take my cat right now getting hurt because he's been with me for so long it feels like.
Can you have two male cats together though? I mean, did I get wrong information about it? I'm hoping so because I really want to get a second cat. Two cats at the shelter were SO sweet and I'd love to take one of them home if he could get along with my boy cat. What do you think?

Keep them in separate rooms for the first few weeks. Keep the initial introductions short and supervised.
Hissing, spitting, and posturing are normal. They may even give each other a swat. Don't worry about that. They will work it it out. They may or may not become best friends, but should learn to tolerate each other.
I had two male cats, and they seemed to get along alright! I had a cat who I had named cricket, I wanted to get him a friend so we found this stray cat in our apartment complex who had just had kittens so we took one of her kittens (we had named it BooBoo), we let BooBoo grow up around cricket, and of course since BooBoo was a kitten he wasn't old enough to get in a fight with Cricket, Cricket eventually got used to him, and when BooBoo got older they got along perfectly , never once did they get in a fight!
my advice to you is if you're going to get a male cat, get it as a kitten! it has more time to adjust to it's surroundings and other animals around it.

After a few scuffles and some pissed-on furniture, they'll decide who gets what and leave each other alone. The length of time this takes and amount of damage done will depend on how dominant your cats are and how bad they want to be alpha cat. If you end up with two submissive cats, they may not fight at all.
