I don't mean to sound stupid but I'm curious if zombies are actually real to some extent. I'm not talking about the "zombies" you see in movies and on the television though that are after brains (or should I say "brraaainnsss!"). I also don't mean an actual invasion of zombies that tends to be the basis on many movies. I'm just talking about the walking dead, I suppose. Is there a such thing as the walking dead? Are there real incidences of zombies or A zombie? Any proof to back up a zombie theory? Just curious, really...

Basically, a drug derived from blowfish toxin can induce a near-death state. The victim ingests the drug, apparently dies and is buried, then is dug up and given a different drug that suppresses the will. The victim usually gets worked to death on a farm. So no "BRAAAIIINNSSSS!" zombies; that was George Romero's idea. (Though a vegan zombie will look for "GRAAAAIIINNNNSSS!")

An old "zombie" outbreak occurred in Laos. The cause was a type of Fever, (can't remember, this was in my research years ago) that caused the heart to stop, but let the body move temporarily. The zombies here are not flesh-eating monsters, but instead dead people who received temporary body movement, and partial brain revival.
Zombies are real, in Haiti. Haitians greatly respect the dead, and fear that the bodies of their loved ones will be stolen by the voodoo sorcerers called bokors. The bokor instills fear with the use of magic, such as voodoo dolls, and a magical powder that causes paralysis when stepped upon. The bokor has the supposed ability to make zombies to use as slaves. The zombie created by the bokor, is actually caused by a slow acting poison. This causes a substance to build up in the person, causing a dead-like state, where their metabolism rate is much lower than usual. They usually die when they are buried, by either suffocation, or starvation. But if they are still alive, the bokor digs them up, and feeds them zombie cucumber, which is another drug that causes memory loss and disorientation. Thus, a slave of the bokor is now a zombie to others. Haiti greatly respects the dead, and fear the bokors, also witch doctors, so much, that is is illegal to raise the dead.

Apparently, there is a basis for it, but it isn't exactly like they show on TV. I'd summarize, but I don't think I could tell it nearly as well as Wikipedia!
itdependsonyoux3 answered Tuesday February 23 2010, 2:59 pm: no, you dont sound stupid hahaa, dont worry :]
but there really is no proof of zombies. scientifically, it could never be possible. the only thing that comes close to it is being in a coma, like one of the columnists stated below me. but other than that, nope. hollywood just made it possible.. for movies and such haha. :]
hope i helped, xxo. [ itdependsonyoux3's advice column | Ask itdependsonyoux3 A Question ]

The majority of things ull read about online that arent storys or what not, are just folklore from different countrys etc.
Xenolan answered Tuesday February 23 2010, 12:05 pm: Medical science has only recently reached the point where we can pretty definitively tell the difference between someone who really is dead and someone who is in a deep coma. For most of human history, one couldn't always tell for sure, and there have been well-documented instances of people "rising from the dead". Such people were probably disoriented, confused, or perhaps even driven mad because they woke up and found themselves in a coffin or morgue. Of course, they weren't really rising from the dead, because they weren't actually dead in the first place, but people could be forgiven for having thought they were.
Jbstargate10 answered Tuesday February 23 2010, 8:24 am: Well, theres not such thing as a "Zombie" but there's a drug that can make a person look like a "Walking Dead". I forget the name of the drug but it knocks you out and you appear dead as your pulse is slowed down(I don't know how it does any of this). Then shortly after the person gets up and appears dead. The person will start walking around. I guess it makes the person really high to a point where he/she has no communication skills whatsoever.
