Is there a specific reason that you're depressed? If there isn't, medication's generally the best thing for you. & even if you do have a reason, yeah. I know you'd rather not take any medication, but I've been in your place. I refused to take any and I tried to just fight it off on my own; Despite what people may tell you, not being able to fight it off doesn't make you weak. Depression is a chemical imbalance. It can be fixed with medication. If you go to the right doctor, they would prescribe you Lexapro. It's the SAFEEST thing out there. It's not gonna alter how you grow, how you think, your personality. It'll make you the old you again.
Therapy's also very good. It might be awkward at first, but eventually you'll open up. No one will know you're going there, ever. Don't worry about that. It can help alot having someone to talk to who can give you unbiased, nonjudgemental advice.

But if you're like I was, everything I just said probably irritated you & you hardly read it cause you're so determined not to take any meds or talk to someone. I really hope you'll go back & read it if you did though. :)

Try finding something that really inspires you. Start painting or drawing. Get a coloring book - however little kid-ish that may sound - and just start coloring anytime you felt upset. For some reason, that never failed to chill me out.
Find something you're good at and do it. Get involved in a club, a sport, anything as long as it's real laidback & nonstressful.
Start learning how to play an instrument. Paino, violin, guitar. Take lessons somewhere.
Start exercising. Walk, run, lift weights. Get on a regular schedule. It relieves stress & boosts serotonin slightly.
Volunteer somewhere. You could try a church nursery. An assisted living - You can just talk to some people if they're lonely, do bingo, card games, paint their nails. There's tons of places you can volunteer; You just gotta find em.

Goodluck & I hope you feel better soon! :D

You can keep a diary or a journal. Write about your feelings and how different situations make you feel. And write about the things that can make that situation better. And what my mom told me when I got a full length mirror is to put little sayings about yourself around the mirror. Things like: your beautiful, nobody is like you, God loves you. Things that will lift you spirits.

I am a great deal older than most of the advisers on this site, so my advice will be somewhat different from what you have received and may continue to receive from others.

Whether you need medication or not to treat your depression is something only a Physician can diagnose. As someone who has and is suffering from depression I can attest to the fact that you cannot cure depression yourself. If you have tried medication and therapy without success then the problem is probably the wrong medication and a therapist you were not comfortable with.

I went through three therapists before I found one I was comfortable with. The first two wanted to work on the physical cause for my depression giving me instructions on Biofeedback. The third passed me off to a student of hers. As for medications; my family physician, because of Insurance problems, was prescribing for me. Once the Insurance problem was taken care of and I was able to see a Psychiatrist, I was then able to get the proper medication for clinical cause of my depression. With the proper medication and a therapist that I was comfortable with, who was also able to see the emotional causes of my depression, I was able to start on the road to recovery.

I have listed two Websites below that you might find useful in finding out more about the different kinds of depression. Most depression is what is called clinical depression: that being a hormonal or chemical imbalance in certain areas of the area of the brain. In general this is usually easily corrected with medication. Talk therapy is advised to help the patient realize what triggers the depressive episodes so the patient can recognize these symptoms and deal with them before they trigger a depressive episode. There may be other things that the therapist will need to help the patient with that will come out in therapy, if so the patient and the therapist will deal with them as they arise. This is all part of the healing process.

Please give therapy and if needed medication another chance. Depression is not an illness you can deal with by using over the counter medication. Interview therapists until you find one you are comfortable with. If you and your family doctor feel medication is required find a Psychiatrist to prescribe the prober medication. Why a Psychiatrist? They are the best doctors to deal with problems of depression and the medications to treat the problem. It does not mean you are crazy.

why are you depressed?the first thing to overcome depression is to trigger whats causing it. if you dont know what it is then how can you help yourself?
talk about how you feel to someone,i dont mind im a good listner.
Or you can write how you feel in a book and even rip up the pages, youll feel batter after. another thing is do the things that make you happy. dont lock yourself up in your room all the time its no good. try hanging out with friends and family and those true people that really happy you laugh and forget. keep yourself busy and dont think about being sad just think about good times.before you go to bed think about 2 or 3 things that made you happyand just remind yourself of them...remember if you want to talk im here just inbox me:)

There aren't many ways to treat depression without getting help from a professional from it. Not getting treatment for depression can often times be dangerous. I would suggest that you seek therapy because it's very hard to get over it without the aid of a professional.
