It starts in the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside most bones. Bone marrow is where blood cells are made.
when you're healthy your bone marrow makes
white blood cells, which help your body fight cancer.
Red Blood cells, which carry oxygen to all parts of your body.
and Platelets, which help your blood clot.
Over time, leukemia cells can crowd out the normal blood cells. This can lead to serious problems such as anemia , bleeding, and infections. Leukemia cells can also spread to the lymph nodes or other organs and cause swelling and pains.
There are several types of leukemia though
It may be acute or chronic. Acute leukemia gets worse very fast and may make you feel sick right away. Chronic leukemia gets worse slowly and may not cause symptoms for years.
It may be lymphocytic or myelogenous. Lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia affects white blood cells called lymphocytes. Myelogenous leukemia affects white blood cells called myelocytes.
Having Leukemia doesn't nessicarily mean you're gonna die. I'm sure there are many treatments for it to prevent that from happening.
Hope my advice helped.
And I hope the bets of luck to you!

If you have it, it's not to rare that you'll live so, yes in most cases the Leukemia takes over and you lose the fight to survive. [ SomeoneSpecial's advice column | Ask SomeoneSpecial A Question ]

Let's take a look at our medical terminology first, shall we? It's easier to understand and remember things that way: =)
"Leuk-" is a prefix that means "white"
"-emia" is a suffix that means "blood"
Leukemia basically means "cancer of the white blood cells."
==========================================
IS LEUKEMIA CANCER?
Leukemia is A TYPE OF CANCER where the bone marrow produces abnormal leukocytes (abnormal white blood cells ["-cyte" is a suffix that means "cell"]).
Overtime, there would be too many leukocytes, and they would CROWD OUT the normal white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
And that is how it could kill you (explained in a simplest form).
=============================================
DOES HAVING LUEKEMIA MEAN YOU'RE GOING TO DIE?
No, having leukemia does NOT mean that you're going to die. If you can treat it in time, you'll be just fine.
The death rate of people with leukemia in 2009 is about 45% to 50% (I cannot remember exactly the percentage, sorry =(, it has been a while since I study any of this).
=============================================
As for the treatment, depending on what type of leukemia you have--acute leukemia or chronic leukemia--, the treatment can be vary.
ACUTE LEUKEMIA's most basic treatment is REMISSION--destroy the abnormal white blood cells (abnormal leukocytes).
CHRONIC LEUKEMIA is more complicated. You will most likely be on a "watchful waiting" process. This basically means "watch and wait." Depending on how it progress, new treatments will be put into action.
