Interview coming up soon! Need help with one of the questions!

Question Posted Saturday April 18 2009, 3:50 pm

So I'm applying for a class officer position at school, and one of my teachers is a class sponsor. She told me that one of the questions they would ask would be:

How would you get more people to come and decorate that hallways and make floats during spirit week?

Basically, how would I up attendance to meetings and activities. I don't want crappy answers like "say there will be food" or "make lots of announcements" because DUH.

I need really creative answers that will show that I deserve the position.

You can say a lot of things but what they are really looking for is someone who is going to not just have decorating parties and more food at meetings. They are looking for someone to bring pride to their work and really change the culture of the place. In short they need a strong foundation before they can start upping the attendance to any meetings. My answer would be something like...

"It's funny that you mention spirit week, because that is something that I see is really lacking in most kids these days. I would first work on making sure that all the officers had a stronger bond by organizing team bulding excursions, once the core team is strong, we can influence more of our peers to join in. Someone's perception of 'cool' is always subjective, but it is hard to argue when a whole team is working together."

Here are a few ideas:

Say you will make posters, but not boring white poster black marker ones. Jazz em up! Make neon green and hot pink poster boards with glitter! Plan on making posters that will catch people's attention, and not just make them think "BORING!"

Don't just make lame, normal announcements. Does your T.V have a video club? If so, make a VIDEO announcement and have them show it during homeroom/lunch periods or however your school does it. And make it funny, like a skit. Not just you standing there saying "Hey, come decorate!" Get a group of friends together and making a silly little commercial for it. This will make the decorating seem appealing to a much larger crowd.

Pass out fliers. Kind of like with the poster idea, make them noticeable and flashy posters with bright colors and bold decorative accents.

I think somebody below me said make it like a game. I agree with this idea. Have a prize for the best decoration ideas/the people who decorate the best. Make it a game for the whole school! My school does this during Homecoming week (sort of?) and we do it by grade. You can try this, because it's a lot of fun and a ton of people would get into it because of the competition aspect.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

well try thinking of it as your own party. call in friends, or parents of the students,
try to give in as much enthusiasm, or just have school spirit! make fundraisers by sending out fliers and putting signs around the community. people will get involved
hope it works out!!

K well for the decorating thing get people to come out by making it fun make it sort of like an amusement park without the rides get different stations set up for people to help out in and have a food section and have a movie playing in the gym so that after the decorating is done people can chill out and watch a movie or make it a dance room and jus make it like a school dance/spirit week prep and for the stations just have people working at one station for awhile and then keep switching so they have worked at every station and the work will be done faster. And for the second for meetings and attendance make a rule that if they want to be on the commitee they have to show up to every meeting and have food and like music and make it fun by just letting everyone get into groups and talk about everything at first and then get everyone together and discuss everything they talked about individually.
